Varga 2150A | Behind the Wings

Varga 2150A | Behind the Wings
At Wings Over the Rockies’ second location, Exploration of Flight, we have a fleet of aircraft that fly, and that you can book for a sight-seeing flight. One of them is the Varga 2150A!
The Varga 2150A is Pilot Valerie Blome's favorite aircraft. In this video, you're going to find out exactly why. We’ll learn about the Varga’s design and development, inspired by the trainer aircraft of WWII, walkaround to see it’s quirky design features. And yes, we are going to get to fly this thing.
THIS... is going to be cool!

Val Bloom was my flight instructor. When I first started my journey she was cool and fun. The varga was the first tiny plane I rode in and man is it a cool plan!

I know there are three of them here in Switzerland. At least one is used as a glider towplane. I always fancied flying one but never had the chance.

Love this plane. After getting my Pilots License in 1975 this became my favorite plane to fly. I learned in a Cessna 150 at Oceanside Ca airport where Bill Morrisey was Owner/Manager. On the field was his Morrisey 2150. Bill would rent this craft to only certain customers and I was one of them. I logged over 100hrs in this aircraft. Such enough us military guys from Camp Pendleton were the ones flying the Morrisey.

I used to do work around a Morrisey 2000, the direct predecessor to the Varga Kachina. Was based at the Vintage Flying Museum in Fort Worth Texas, until about 6-7 years ago.

Wow! My grandfather Alva Wilson redesigned some of the components of the shinn and turned it into the varga kachina.. I used to sit in these planes as a kid in his shop out of chandler. when they were building them and while they were in production I 😢got to sit in them and pretend I was flying. I know they sold it to a gentlman in Montanna and I believe they re named in mountain air or montanna air, Im not sure. My grandfather moved to montanna when he sold the company to help set the shop up. I dont think the new owner was able to keep it going. I still have some of the original kachina logo decals that went on the tail.. Alva Wilson was very talented he had partnered with Varga. Varga was the money man and Alva was the engineer.

Maybe it was edited out, but I missed the answer pertaining to the question pertaining to inverted flight? There was a T-34 when I was in college that it was forbidden to do aerobatics in due to its lack of an “inverted oil system.” Forbidden is not in the vernacular of some college students. I heard this one would barrel roll and loop with ease.😬

The Varga is not an aerobatic plane. The T-34 was flown upside down in this video we made last year: kzread.info/dash/bejne/aXxsqbdmmbHQl6w.html

Despite looking like a miniature T-34, it's certified only for normal and utility category. The oil and fuel systems weren't built for it, and the Varga's wing is a strongly cambered airfoil, very much intended to generate the lift on the top side. It would take a pretty creative pitch angle to get that wing to maintain altitude while upside-down. Overall, a bad idea.🙃

I went for a ride in a Varga that was owned by the father of a guy I used to work for. While cruising around, I asked him when he got his private pilot license . "Oh, I don't have a license..." Well, ya fly like ya do.

NEVER heard of it, which is OK…. Until you need to buy parts for it. I suspect it is a big pain in the butt to maintain

Fortunately, the Varga shares a lot of parts with Piper aircraft, so those are easy to source. There are some things which are getting quite rare, but most everything in the powerplant and propeller assembly is available.

This Varga is from 1977, but the same airframe was originally developed by Morrisey Aviation Inc. in 1958.
