while you were showing your battery setup, noticed you have the heavy positive lead coming off the battery, running across the negative terminal of one of the batteries. you might want to make a habit of inspecting those cables now and again for wear, as i'm sure they vibrate while driving. if that cable ever wears enough to arc, it's not gonna be a good day for you probably.

That explosion was most likely a truck tire. They are under a huge amount of pressure and when they pop they can be extremely loud and possibly fatal if you are standing next to them.
