Well that was fun. I have several EWI and for my use, it's all about how accurately it outputs MIDI information. If you ever get a chance to play any of the SWAM virtual instruments with an EWI that has extra controllers such as bite and for right thumb, I think you'll be amazed. Though nothing to compete with the wonderful sound of your acoustic recorders. But I look at them as different tools not trying to compete.

Being able to play recorder, but to also hear different and experiments with the different instrument, sounds, and effects seems like a lot of fun to me. Playing 3 octives, right away, is great too. I can only play 2 and a 3rd octive. Really great review. I don't recall hearing the price of this instrument, but I can always look it up. I’ve just bought one of these ‘type’ of instruments and after a fortnight, I think they’re great instruments. The sounds are great for just mucking about with - but the attack and over-processed vibrato are a bit much at times - so I’ve started using it as a controller to softsynths on my iPad’s and Android tablets, using either wired or BT midi - and the sounds are excellent! FYI - Fluidsynth on android is a superb sample player for soundfonts - and some of the free synths on iPad are excellent - although I’m probably going to invest in the DX7 lookalike - Dexed - because playing a DX7 from a ‘sax’ is pretty cool! Love to see you do a video on using these instruments with external sounds, as part of a studio/gigging set-up!

Nice review, thank you! I bought the Carryon and ordered this instrument as well, and I would give one piece of advice to anyone interested in these small digital instruments: the sound from the small built-in speaker is much more disappointing than the sound you can really get. For solo playing use headphones, preferably good quality ones, and you will hear a marked improvement. But the best solution is a small amplifier (I use a Donner 5W electric guitar amplifier) and the difference is huge! However, I would have liked to see a test of the main difference between this instrument and similar ones reviewed in the past: the MIDI connection via USB cable, which should solve the delay problems playing over a base.

I bet you did not expect to end up with twins, huh? LOL.😂 It was nice to see Jon(?). It is rare for me to see a sax player have something nice to say about that size of an EWI. I hope parenthood is going well for you two. Glad Vangoa reached out to you. You did not mention that an acoustic recorder has the 2 side-by-side right hand double pinky holes and how that would map to this instrument. Also you did not mention the User Manual but it is pretty small and probably camera shy. Thanks for following up with Vangoa. At least you did not create and release this video about a month ago. Take care. Go Team Recorder.

I use oboe fingerings with my EWI, and with Garritan Aria VST software, it gives me a shortcut back to my old oboe days without having to deal with reeds, tuning, cracking or other such issues, and an even handier shortcut to the flute or sax while still using oboe fingerings!!

Hello Sarah! thanks for this wonderful review, I like your presentation very much. I'm working on music from both the Louis XIV (Jean Baptiste Lully) period up to the late 1700s including Baroque styles, and I also do fantasy music using combinations of Digital Grand Piano, Theremin as well as string instruments like Mandolin and Guitars. Your review of this made me wonder just how good it would be to represent the music of the 1600s- early 1800s (pre-Victorian). I was also curious, is it possible to have it use other voices from other sources? Digital/Electronic/Midi instruments nowadays allow you to add voices to their repertoire, or is this not that advanced? It seems like a great instrument for the price point (which for me is around 70 EUR, I am in Berlin, Germany). You have a new fan and follower.

I have been playing for a few days the Chinese version of this musical instrument, same hardware but different firmware; among the available sounds the violin and harmonica are missing, replaced by two oriental musical instruments: hulusi and suona. I confirm the flaw Sarah also found when using headphones: the sound coming out of the headphone/speaker jack is too loud and distorted. To correct, you need to set the volume to level 1-2, not higher. (For comparison, the Carry-On can be turned up to volume 10 without distortion.) But what makes the difference between this and other similar instruments is the MIDI connection via USB cable. Simply perfect! No delay (performance impossible to achieve with Bluetooth) and the ability to play any kind of instrument by connecting this digital saxophone to your PC or tablet (I used a Samsung with android system). And in this way there is no distortion because the sound comes out of the PC/tablet and not the instrument, so it can be amplified without any problems.

I've been on the mailing list waiting for the ecorder to come back in stock for YEARS! I was still a broke college student when it first came out and I could not afford the three figure price tag, but now I'm starting to think I missed out forever. I'm not really interested in midi instruments, and I never realized how hard it would be to find one with true recorder fingerings. I rarely find time to practice anymore because my free time is so late at night and the roommates would riot.

I don't understand why you would want an ecorder over the much cheaper ($150) Re.corder. The Re.corder can play with recorder fingerings. The main difference with ecorder would be that the Re.corder has no built-in sounds; it connects (wirelessly) to a phone or computer where the sounds are generated . These sounds can be better than the built-in sounds on the ecorder. Put a phone in your pocket to generate the sounds, run some wired headphones to your ears, and play the Re.corder. Seems like perfect solution for a person like you. I'm not a recorder person, I come from wind controller/synth world, and while ecorder looks impressive, (1) the sounds it creates are not better than what you can get with the Re.corder, (2) the Re.corder experience is closer to a recorder (it actually can play as acoustic recorder), and it has some features that ecorder doesn't (e.g., x-y-z axis modulation). I would suggest search for youtube videos by Stef Haynes and Artinoise's own Re.corder videos to learn more about it. You really need to wrap your head around how these gadgets work, then I expect you'll see Re.corder is what you want.

This time round - yes it looks similar to the Carryon - but my main interest was whether it actually works as a Midi controller. I tried a Carryon, but gave up on that as it only seemed to work with Bluetooth, and although it was claimed it would work with general computers, it seemed that it may only have been configured to work "properly" with mobile phones. Neither instrument really sounds like a recorder - but they could be fun anyway. The Vangoa - which I've not tried - may have fingering which is somewhat different from standard recorder fingering, whereas as I recall the Carryon had similar fingering to a recorder. It appears that pressure sensitivity is better with the Vangoa, and also there are two mouthpiece protectors, whereas the Carryon only came with one. It would be really interesting to see if the Vangoa functions as a Midi controller, and if it is responsive enough. Also, for latency reasons, does it support wired Midi connections, or only via Bluetooth, which would probably slow it down considerably. For example, if you played one of Vivaldi's recorder concertos into a DAW or notation software via Midi, would it track the notes quickly enough and accurately enough? If it would, then one could input the solo parts into software, and then replay them using different virtual instruments. There are some recorder virtual instruments (VSTs) available, for example by Versilian studios, which can be tracked down - look for Community Edition [VSCO] which use real recorder sounds, and some studios may be going to release new recorder VSTs in the not too distant future. There are also usable VSTs from Garritan which may be compatible, for example for saxophone sounds. The review here suggests that different levels of volume are possible, though this is not always obvious to listeners. From various other reviews, if there are dynamics it should be possible to play quietly and also louder, so get noticeable dynamic effects. That might be more in line with some other instruments - rather than recorders, as recorders don't have a wide dynamic range. This particular instrument seems difficult to track down on Amazon - though there are similar instruments. However if there are several instruments which are similar but not the same, then it would be hard to be sure that the right instrument was purchased. Probably the manufacturers of this type of instrument are making a whole bunch of different variants. Right now it doesn't seem to appear on Amazon, so where can it be bought? Also what is the price? Lastly, how long does the battery last, and is it replaceable? [probably not....] Here is a link to the am.us web site, but currently this is not available. Price seems to be around $100 US or £100 UK. www.amazon.com/dp/B0C1GC5K5Y It may be that anyone who wants to use an instrument like this as a Midi controller should look elsewhere - for example to the Akai EWI ranges, but those are several times more expensive than this one. Some of the older EWI models use old style Midi sockets. Buyers from the US may consider these EWI devices more affordable than UK buyers. A decent acoustic soprano recorder can be bought for less than these EWIs, so maybe one has to have a particular application in order to consider EWIs. A significant use case is for players who want to practise without actually making a noise - people who may want to play while on holiday or in hotels etc.

I have the Vangoa, the Re.corder, the Warbl, the Travel Sax 2, and the Akai EWI USB wind controllers. The Vangoa does function as a midi controller, via both Bluetooth and USB. It's Bluetooth midi unfortunately has too much lag for me. I may try it with a Bluetooth adapter attached to USB to see if that's better. The USB midi connection works pretty well. I would check out youtube videos by Stef Haynes on both the Vangoa and the Re.corder to compare them. The Re.corder feels to me like the better controller and higher quality instrument.

@@hsitz Thanks a lot for this tip. I found a few videos by Stef Haynes, and also the one in which he uses the re.corder with Mainstage and sets it up with motion controls for expression effects. That looks like a bit of a game changer for me, though may be less useful for those who don't have Apple kit, or Mainstage. I'm not sure if there's anything similar in the WinPC world or the Linux world, but for Apple users this might give them a good reason to buy Mainstage - which I'm hoping is still a fairly cheap option. Yep - it still seems to be under £30 in the UK and I'm guessing $30 in the US. This may have just swung me towards actually buying one of these instruments. Anyone else interested in this kind of functionality and details of the instruments should look out for Stef's videos - definitely worthwhile.

You might check out the KZreadr CutiePie. She has a video where she reviews the Tony Dixon Low D Whistle and Irish Flute Set. She is primarily a tin whistle player but she does play this product in the flute configuration as well. She also has her own video review of the Vangoa EWI-100 product. You can search KZread for Irish Flute videos. KZreadr whistletutor has a video “4 Beginner Irish Flute Tips/Tricks”. I am not familiar with the education system in your area but grade school band teachers may be a good source of information for adults wanting to learn about playing a traditional instrument. Likewise if there is a professional or semi professional orchestra in your area that should also be a good source of information regarding local instrument learning. To me it seems like the skills needed to play a “standard” traverse flute would apply to a traverse Irish flute. Sarah definitely should have a better handle on instrument instruction options on that side of the Atlantic. Best wishes.

I love that you're getting targeted for these things, too! I did own a Carry-On for exactly 24 hours before returning it for a refund - I really couldn't work with the touchpoint keys - have ordered one of these (actually under a different brand name) and hopefully I'll prefer the raised button-like keys. I play in a kind of ambient-prog trio and quite like the idea of adding some keening digital woodwinds played through a bunch of effects pedals (there goes my USP - now everybody'll be doing it!).

I purchased one of these! It's really amazing, it does everything Sarah demonstrated, but I was really shocked and a little disappointed by how hard it is to blow. I have chronic health issues including shortness of breath and I usually do okay with the soprano recorder, sometimes I struggle with the alto. Even on the lowest breath setting, I feel like this EWI has more resistance than the alto recorder and I find it exhausting to even get a few notes out. Can anybody else confirm or deny that it takes a fair bit of air? I'm still planning to keep the instrument and try to improve on it, but I'm mostly wondering if it's possible that I have gotten a defective one. I suspect not, but I honestly expected the breath requirements on the "easy" setting to be similar to a soprano recorder or D whistle, and at least for mine it's not like that at all.
