Vanessa was only 19 when she stood in front of that huge crowd and sang for the world. Her vocal range is off the charts. She has a particularly beautiful lower register. I didn’t count how long that last note went on for, but it seemed like forever. Apparently the great Andrea Bocelli was extremely impressed by Vanessa’s singing here and praised her performance.

I was THERE on the night, in the audience! I am now 58 and to this day, this was the ULTIMATE live performance I've ever seen/heard either live or broadcasted... of anything or anyone. EVER. Since I saw it live on TV during the opening ceremony more than 20 years ago, this always manages to make me tear up...

The last note was 26 seconds long. I still to this day can't find anyone who supports for that long in their chest/mix without falling to pieces. Vanessa has never had any vocal training and doesn't know much about vocal technique she has said somewhere once before. Both of her parents were singers. Thank you for doing this reaction i enjoyed watching!

In an interview years later Vanessa commented that she had no fear in singing at the Olympic Games. She was a teenager and just went out and sang her song. Never mind that she was being televised to the biggest audience in the world! She said that if she had to do that now she would have a totally different perspective, understanding the enormity of the occasion. I was also lucky enough to have been in attendance at the Sydney Olympic Games Opening Ceremony and at that stage of the evening when Vanessa Amorosi sang out boldly "hero's live for ever" there was a huge gasp in the audience - we probably heard one of the greatest live performances in many many years.
