Ohhhhhmygoooood. Dude. I’m 26 years old watching this for the first time today and I’m mad I haven’t seen this sooner lol. My jaw was dropped, mouth dry, and in absolute Awe. I miss this marching band in HS. This is something else. This is pure joy for me rn I can’t explain it. AHHHHHHHHH

JD Shaw’s writing is unparalleled. He just knows exactly what to do and it’s consistently perfect.

Fellow marching band member here. Besides some DCI shows. This was one of the loudest bands i have ever heard of and it was so goooooooooooood. No wonder they say "Everything is bigger in Texas". Were going to Indianapolis again. I cant wait to hopefully hear this band again.

Still my favorite marching show of all time after 2 years of marching band.

that ending bit of the solo where the trombone glissandos up is just perfect

Five years later and this is still the best BOA show I’ve ever seen. Absolutely incredible. The drill, the music, the choreography, and the heart that the kids obviously put into it is wild!

It's wonderful to hear a band play melodic Mozart - - and win with it. Great job Vandergrift!

Incredibly musical percussion ensemble.

Watch Mike Howard throughout the entire performance and his reaction towards the end. That is one PROUD MAN!!!!!!

I was a volunteer for music warmups for all prelims semis and finals, I'm from PA and I knew coming into this competition Vandegrift was amazing, I was lucky enough to be able to watch this show from the box, from the auxiliary warm up room ( friend had to trade me so I could watch because they didn't use the main music warm up room for winds ), and for their victory run I watched from the field. It was nice to be able to step back from preforming and just being able to watch everything great around you. It was an amazing year for BOA and super competitive. Definitely an experience I'm going to remember.

I remember when I first saw them playing that year I was like, yep, this is the one. Still come back for that trombone every now and then

My school’s band would’ve done flight of the bumblebee this year. But we had to move to plan B.

Man what a throw back I’m so glad my last year was a good one I’m so proud of everyone that was apart of the 2019/2020 vandegrift band by far my best year

When I saw this show for the first time in Prelims, I knew they would take the golden eagle !!!! INCREDIBLE SHOW!!!!

This is amazing I am blown away by this! Congratulations! 🎉

I can’t wait to join Vandegrift high school soon. I am a freshman and will be joining my junior year. Can’t wait Vandegrift!

I have never heard of that band. This show brought tears to my eyes. This is a true power show. I must say that they have a FANTASTIC brass and very tight percussion. The only things negatively that stood out to me were the simplicity of the drill, with a bit of stand and play, and then becoming fatigued just before the final push. GREAT, GREAT JOB VANDEGRIFT!!!!!

Meanwhile our Dad band is still working out Smoke On The Water! 😂😂. Allof these bands in these competitions are just fabulous. Period. This was a very special performance for sure and blessed to have witnessed it and all of the others.

Geeeeez the way they move in the beginning is so quick. Those slides across the field are insane😱.

@@echonox31 it is, they are a dance team, no rifles or sabres. They use flags, but don’t toss or throw them. It’s just always been that way since the school opened.

Honestly, I think Vandegrift may have bested Reagan if they both were there. Hard to tell; both shows were so fantastic.

It's a public school. All kids can play in the band. I believe they move less strong players (those who struggle playing and marching at the same time) into props management roles, etc. The school is only 10 years old and grown so much that I expect they will eventually have to split into two bands (JV vs Varsity).

Sometimes I wish BOA had a color guard and percussion category. But other times I’m glad they don’t idky😭

Nice clean drill. Well designed and marched. Not very challenging though (please don't kill me), from a /visual standpoint/, thought musically they were pretty damn tight. I was kinda shocked to read further down in the comments that they won? I just expected something a bit more ambitious to be the winner. Though, I suppose putting Mozart on the field is ambitious enough, considering.

And they won the TMEA State Honor Band that year! Actually, they march every kid they can so everyone can be involved. It’s a HUGE undertaking to put that many musicians on the field. The drill never stopped, they did body movements non stop. DCI only marches 120, this program has almost 400 that want to be on the field. I’m so proud that our directors make every effort to do so instead of just the top few. And, I’m completely proud of my son, the trombone soloist! 😍

Would've loved to see both of them at GN, since I loved both of their shows. Unfortunately, BA doesn't seem to go to GN every year anymore, and Reagan performed at the Macy's Parade.

Cause Way May have but they weren’t there and they swept the floor with their competition. People can’t even hate on this show because this would’ve placed above some previous champions in earlier years as well. Obviously different year different show but you can’t take this away from them especially after sounding as great as they did. Beautiful show, clean, powerful, and it damn well put them on the map

Cause Way I mean of course the results would be different lmao let’s throw money at all the GOD TIER marching programs and have them ALL compete. 60% of the finalist wouldn’t even have made it lmao. Let’s throw in Ronald Reagan, Broken Arrow, Tarpon Springs, Wando, etc. there’s already a top 8 if you include the top 4 that placed making it in with them. Results would be all over the place, but they aren’t there so we can’t make those assumptions

Lol the only impression of Kyoto Tachibana you guys get is from Pasadena parades. You seriously think they could beat bands like Vandegrift,Avon,Carmel, Hebron or Broken Arrow? Kyoto Tachibana is lucky they don't know who these guys are cause it seems like 90% of people think they're better but they've never done anything against a BOA champion band. They aren't better. This isn't against Tachibana's hard work but they it's true.

They would score huge in execution (both musical and visual) but would struggle to rack up the necessary GE points due to the lack of difficulty and artistic complexity of their music selections. It would be like trying to win the state marching contest while playing Louie Louie and National Emblem March....like you could be the Chicago Symphony and you're still going to hit a wall just based on your literature choice. They'd also run into some size issues that a lot of other bands with only 120-130 kids run into. It's hard to compare a band of that style to the bands of BOA. Now if we're talking about some of the JMBA scholastic groups, like Shonandai HS, Saitama Sakae HS, Tenrikyo Academy (天理教校学園), Nishihara, etc.....Those shows have more of a WGI-Lite flair to them. I think those groups are stronger overall than Vandegrift, Hebron, Broken Arrow, Avon....groups like that.

Here again very interest how these boa bands have to have such large numbers to achieve power, in my opinion this many members just clog up the field.

Cleaner?.. Yeah they can play runs and licks 9 outta 10 high school bands couldn't even come close to..but then again 99 vanguard didn't just raise your hairs.. You felt it in your chest.. This band could compete with some college/university marching bands.. Which for a high school band is ridiculous good.. But a top tier drum corps during late July onward pushing into finals week is when the sound comparison just isn't close.. Its like saying lsu or Clemson could beat the raiders or browns.. Its just not happening.. I feel sorry for any band thats gotta follow this group at a football game halftime show.. thats gotta be terrible if your in the other band 😂

Also the amount of players in these groups shouldn't be compared to dci they are as loud only because they have a crap ton in these bands Take 50 members out in the winds section and it wouldn't be as loud

Lol they deserved the win 100%. Not having a guard doesn't take away that they marched more than Avon and had the 2nd best music of that day. Also they won general effect. That tells you enough they deserved the eagle.

My school year 2010-2014 there was not a lot of band members. Vandegrift was still considered new then. We got to where we were with well deserved accomplishments. You can’t buy a band. 2019-2020 is because now they have enough people interested of being part of the band family. And a great band at that. Lol go hate somewhere else 💁🏽‍♀️

It's a public school. You get the kids that live in that school's local community and that's it. They are fortunate that the Leander Independent School District really invests in fine arts. All the local elementary and middle schools have well-established music programs creating a strong feeder program into this and the other high schools in Leander ISD (which are pretty well all incredible bands btw)
