Vancouver, WA - Then & Now, Part 1

One of a two parts of the "Vancouver Then & Now" DVD made for the Clark County Historical Museum's "Vancouver Uncovered" exhibit which commemorated the City of Vancouver's 150th year of incorporation in 2007. The 17 minute DVD includes images dating from 1843-2006 from the museum's archives and shows the development of the City of Vancouver's downtown core. The piece is set to music courtesy of The Oregon Trail Band, Mike George & Tom Richmond, Dale Spalding & Bruce Malament. Produced by Crystine Jividen and Mary Grgich. The DVD is available for purchase via the museum's store and website.

I love my friends in Washington State & Oregon ... and it’s all very fascinating the history of how our nations came to be.

Fort Vancouver was the HQ of the Hudson Bay Company's Columbia division. There was no international border then, and no Canada to speak of either.

There was a “Canada” to speak of, just no Canada an independent confederation. The term Canada began being used in 1608.

It’s very fascinating how much influence Captain George Vancouver had in his time ... many places & topographical features have been named after him. Meanwhile, it’s perplexing to me why Vancouver, Washington wouldn’t have simply kept its original name of Fort Vancouver to distinguish itself from the larger more famous Vancouver 🇨🇦. On a tourism marketing perspective this would be a better choice. They should really sell themselves on this older history.

Love the old pictures but seems Vancouver doesn’t believe in keeping many historical buildings, not even the theatre! At least you have the library!

@marfmaster Actually Vancouver, BC was incorporated something like 30 years after Vancouver, WA. In addition, there is evidence of Vancouver, WA being referred to as "Vancouver" some 60 years prior to Vancouver, BC. But sure....

Just wondering about The Schofield Building ... are there any efforts to refurbish this lovely old heritage site and recreate that lovely cornice & other architectural design details?

@wins457 If you're referring to Vancouver, BC, it was originally called Burrard and started out in Gastown.

When we take pictures of Vancouver in the US it is in Washington. Vancouver BC is in a different country. The mixup happens to us all the time. When I say I am from Vancouver they assume a different country. At one point there was a drive to change the name to Fort Vancouver Washington to differentiate but nothing came of it. I live right near the actual Fort Vancouver close to the Columbia River. Vancouver BC is a beautiful city in a lovely country. As for here I remember those cow pastures and farms all along 164th. It really really changed. The population was around 80 thousand then and it has more than doubled since then! Wow.

FUNNY. Seeing as how you copied us ;) Vancouver WA- Founded 1857 Vancouver BC- Founded 1886 Math was kinda hard for all of us so I'll help you; that was 29 years before BC. So technically we're the original, have a nice day!

Vancouver WA is just a suburb of Portland eh... they shoulda coulda renamed it to somethin like North Portland or Clarksville or Columbia city... it's not too late ! lol but in all fairness y'all down there named it first, SO the Canadian's (British at the time) were stupid enough to rename the original name "Granville" (which sounds more "Grand" lol but it is too late to change it now ... we are on the world MAP!! ;)
