Nice fish. Best day I ever had halibut fishing was in Shelter Pass, northeast of Port Hardy. Within 30 minutes I first caught a 101 pounder, then a 77 pounder. I returned to that same place many times and never caught another halibut, period. All I caught was a huge skate. I've never caught halibut of that size again. It was an amazing day.

I live right across from you on the USA side. Went out of John Wayne marina at dawn. Two and half hours later got a 44lb butt at the mouth of the Elwa river. 80ft. Spreader bar with a hootchi and some octopus.

I looked at a charter on the west side of the Island and they had a rule about how big a halibut you could keep. The biggest fish are females and they provided the future generations so I think that is the way to go.

Tha's not the rule set out by the charters, but fishery regulations which all anglers need to abide to actually. The maximum length which you can retain changes each year.
