Vancouver Homeless Downtown Eastside | East Hastings Street Problems Unsolved Jan 15 2022

The Downtown Eastside (DTES) is a neighbourhood in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. One of the city's oldest neighbourhoods, the DTES is the site of a complex set of social issues including disproportionately high levels of drug use, homelessness, poverty, crime, mental illness and sex work. It is also known for its strong community resilience, history of social activism, and artistic contributions.

I once called that place home before moving to Chilliwack on the side of the river in a homeless camp. Yes I had an addiction issue but what was keeping me there was far worse and that was the nightmare I lived in my head daily as a victim of child sexual abuse that was suffering in silence . I lived in Saint John NB in a good home, good parents and involved in the church and that is where the abuse begins. When I could take no more I left hitchhiking across Canada trying to get away from the pain but only picked up an addiction to everything . There were a few good runs where I was a functioning addict making it through the day without my fellow workers knowing until I fell down that hole I thought I would never get out and that was on the side of the Vedder river in Chilliwack in a homeless camp where so many organizations would come down to try and help and without them most of us would of starved and they always talked about addiction but never what drove you to your addiction. One night a group of ministers and their wives were having supper with us and the topic of sexual abuse came up ( the ladies were talking to the homeless ladies ) and overhearing their stories hit home for me and hand to god I woke up the next morning and went to see the minister and his wife that spoke up about it and told them how their message hit home and that day was the first day I went crack and meth free in almost a decade and that was 14 years ago now and I have never touched it since . I have worked with that group to create a private recovery home that deals with historical child sexual abuse and how to deal with the emotions without street drugs and alcohol. I am now the director of an organization for historical child sexual abuse victims and run an online news/advertising company with a fantastic wife and 3 beautiful children and a good relationship with my stepdaughter from a previous marriage and her 2 amazing children . If anyone wants to help, my suggestion as someone that has really been there is invest your time in someone down there or a few and lend them your ear, could very well be the turning point in their life . God bless and if you want to help reach out and we can connect you with someone out there making a real difference on the streets . Environment... There was a study done on rats with opiates available in their water bottle. There were two groups. One was in a regular cage and another was in a bigger one with a healthy assortments of food, toys, greenery, branches to climb etc... All the rats in the regular cage became addicted while NONE of the rats in the large enclosure cared for the opiates at all. People can fall into addiction easily but getting out of it depends alot on their environment.

Try living in the middle of it! I live in a nice little BC Housing subsidized bachelor suite right in the middle of the worse block on Hastings, it's like living in a mental asylum. I've been on BC Housing's transfer list for years trying to move out of the area. With only CPP for income, poverty & Vancouver's outrageous rental prices force me to remain in this hell hole.

BC Housing is a corrupt government agency and good people that deserve a nice place to live are ignored. The BC Liberals turned a blind eye on the homeless and the NDP tried and failed with there own corruption. The slum landlords stole money from welfare recipients and never made SRO’s livable or safe. The city did have the money but the non profits never got the funds needed or they were given to slum landlords that just pocketed money not upgrading there buildings to make them up to code. It will take years of planning to make the housing situation in Vancouver better but politicians can’t use a tough love approach that never worked.

  • @nickkraw1

They’re the victims of hard drug dealers, a provincial government and police force that’s soft on drugs, a local culture which has supported the total breakdown of the family, rampant prostitution, the welfare state, and the closing of sanitariums. Do you know how easy it is to prey upon a mentally deficient or psychotic person and get them addicted to hard drugs, or pimp them out as a prostitute? They’re unbelievably more vulnerable and easy to manipulate than sane, mentally well people. Closing the sanitariums and letting the patients all “go free” was not compassion, it was wicked and vile stupidity. The fact that the climate is warm compared to the rest of Canada also perpetuates this problem, because homeless people migrate to Vancouver from all across Canada to live there as they would freeze to death in winter on the streets of Calgary by comparison. BC’s rampant left wing policy and local culture facilitates poverty, addiction, loneliness, and sexual brokenness. Virtue signalling and patting oneself on the back doesn’t work. Financial handouts to people who can’t manage money (which is a very complex thing to do), are of low IQ, addicted, being pimped out, abused, severely socially maladjusted, or are severely mentally ill doesn’t work either. They need much more serious interventions. But, of course, such interventions would be inhumane, or perpetuate the heteronormative patriarchy, or whatever other crap the local lobby groups will come up with to prevent the problem from being addressed. This is a very complex problem and these people need help beyond simple solutions.

When single people can not afford renting an apartment at the age of 23, at the age of 62 would that be different? Vancouver isn't affordable and the politics didn't find a solution ever, same with Toronto area, but almost all of Ontario soon. Will we mandate our single people to sleep in privately owned shelters and pay the rent there instead of apartments? Canada is sick and getting worse.

Wow, this actually looks better than today. There are more tents and garbage on the streets and no one is stopping it or helping them into housing. It’s a lot more complex to just offer them housing as well. When there was a tent city in a park, people where ordered to leave and offered housing but had to get sober so some declined. I wish it was more simple to help. No one deserves to live like that.

A place where you can see people openly shoot up, trash everywhere, a strong smell of urine, people either laying asleep on the sidewalk or dead, you're not sure. (Kept my eye on them until they moved). I've walked alone along this street many times, it's sad but didn't feel unsafe (many police cars and ambulances around). I spoke to a few of the residents and they were friendly (no, they didn't try and grab my purse or anything). Although shocking was also eye-opening.

I drove through this shit hole today with my family after coming in from the U.S. The Canadian and B.C. governments should be ashamed of themselves for letting this open wound fester. It’s worse today than what’s in this video. I grew up in the city and had a couple of careers that exposed me to some living hells and I have never seen anything as apocalyptic as East Hastings. It’s like blocks and blocks of zombies.

Hi from New Zealand, Does Canada have $tax-funded healthcare, mental healthcare with unlimited time periods for unemployment benefits & safety nets, pensions etc for its vulnerable citizens? Are these poverty-stricken people? drug addicts? mentally ill? Canada has such a tourist-friendly, decent 1st world living conditions, great reputation globally. I am genuinely shocked & saddened. I thought the US was the only 1st world country with these conditions.

So many homeless, jobless and drug-adicts gives a very poor impression of a well developed civilised nation.

There are many places that take donations of sorts, one can just call and ask a organization, also volunteers are always appreciated, donations of $$, coffee, food, also the Muslim community goes down every Sunday to feed the people, also I believe they are opening a spot down there to feed the people. Also some religious organizations do the same as well. These loved ones in that community never asked to become drug addicts or alcoholics, many have been through so much trauma in their lives, that alcohol and drugs are coping mechanism because of the lack of support by Governments. ❤️ ✌️ 👊 email your MP if ya want to support or bring attention too.
