Sick brother. You're pretty much living the life I want to live, haha. My name is Rilla. I'm a Software Engineer & Riddim Producer/DJ... I just bought a Ram ProMaster 1500 136wb. I'm about to start documenting my journey and joining the van life scene. Mainly for financial reasons. I've got debt I've got to pay off. So, my channel is centered around development. I'll be documenting my Web Development, Financial Development, Perosnal Development, Artist Development, & Business Development Journies. Keep at it brother! This was inspirational. I just followed.

Very useful THANX!.... I'm taking the leap this year and do the same as a nomadic vocalist, although I might try and get a bigger camper-van with proper toilet, shower and stable desk so that I can set up my digital piano. In Italy r now you can find some outstanding used campers for less than 10K 😁 Keep inspiring us!

You may have already considered that, and it may be totally fine, but I just wanted to make sure that you did - especially in such a small area. Look forward to hearing more from you in the future!

Nice van dude! I am currently building my own van studio, I’ve just bought it yesterday! And now I’m trying to figure out how what do I need to do for it to make it soundproof, so I can record vocals without interference from the outside ir bouncing sounds from the inside. I’m finding this researchquite overwhelming, there is a lot of information online but not very specific. I’m on a budget and I don’t know what exactly I need for this. I’m specially confused about sound deadening streets, do I need them? Or are they only for the car to not rattle while driving? Maybe you could tell me about it. Thank you.

some experience in acoustics here.. basically the best you can ask for in a TINY acoustic field, such as what you'd find in a van, is to minimize high-middle to high frequency reflections as well as deadening resonance in the body of the van. Best advice is 1. to slap some butyl mat to the larger metal membrane-like surfaces in the van such as the inside of the outer walls and under the sub floor. This will deaden vibrations caused by resonances, and you'll find that butyl mat/tape can really be your friend when trying to defeat rattles/vibrations. 2. insulate your cabin well, not only for noise but for temperature regulation. I find a combination of sheep's wool insulation and polyethylene foam, wherever applicable behind the walls/ceiling considering design dimensions, works well. 3. minimize reflective surfaces as best as you can - which is extremely difficult ("tiny acoustic field") but basically anything hard enough to bounce a bouncy ball is your enemy. You'll find that a bed/cushions/clothes/fabrics will help a lot but some extra things can be done. You can either add absorption panels to the interior which is less desirable because absorption coefficients increase logarithmically with panel thickness, and livable interior cabin volume comes at a premium.. OR you can design your interior walls to be acoustically semi-transparent with your insulation acting as your absorption material. Look into slatted wood wall panels. It's the costlier option but for acoustics (and aesthetics imo) it's the superior option. One last tip is to take advantage of the fact that you have multiple surfaces that can acoustically disappear simply by opening doors so if you ever find yourself in quiet environments (or not even, depending on your style), you might be able to experiment with mic placement utilizing boundary-less spaces and natural acoustics of the outside world. Anyways, I know I'm a year late but I hope this helps someone.

oh and btw, "sound proofing" and acoustically treating typically do not work together unless you can build a large building with MANY design considerations and the use of tons of space (and money). If you want to prevent sound from leaking in or out you're essentially sealing yourself in as best you can (remember sound moves through air so no air leakage allowed) and deadening as many acoustically conductive surfaces between you and the outside (think putting your hand on a bell to stop it from ringing). This has the side-effect of trapping most of your acoustic energy inside your space with you along with ALL of the acoustic issues inherent to your space. --- If you'd like a space that sounds more accurate to what you're monitoring and more natural in your recordings, then you're going to want to let alllll of your acoustic energy either be absorbed and diffused (which is physically impossible given the dimensions required for treatments to absorb and diffuse a broad enough spectrum of sound - i.e. wavelengths - , unless you never intend to actually live and travel in this van) OR you let some of this energy escape so that it doesn't reflect and resonate within the space so much. This means that sound will likely have to be able to escape a little, as well as enter. Unfortunately sound-proofing is usually way more expensive than people anticipate and doesn't do them any favors in their music but fortunately, sound-treating is much more achievable and can really lend to how you end up creating your "sound" in the end..
