Van Slyke Castle Historic Ruins exploration

Built in the early 1900s on top of Fox Mountain (or some call it Fox Hill) in Wanaque of Northern NJ, the gorgeous mansion was the summer home for stockbroker William Porter and his wife, Ruth. William Porter called his place Foxcroft, partially derived from the mountain name.
William Porter died in a car crash in 1911 while his wife, Ruth, was traveling home from a European vacation.
The widow inherited the mansion and later remarried an attorney by the name of Warren Van Slyke, who eventually completed the construction to the home.
So, the property changed its name and became known as Van Slyke Castle, a vacation home for the couple.
Warren Van Slyke died in 1925. Ruth, widowed once again, retreated permanently to Van Slyke Castle and never remarried. She died in 1940, leaving the castle without an owner for nine years.
The castle finally was sold in 1949 to a couple who subsequently resold the property two years later to Suzanne S. Christie. No one knows why the couple left the property abandoned, though it’s suspected it could have been the result of a painful divorce.
Suzanne S. Christie abandoned castle shortly after without any visible reason and it became a place where local vandals hung out. Predictably, they finally they set the castle ablaze and it turned into granite-stoned ruins in 1959.
The overgrown remains of the castle, swimming pool and water tower on the top of Fox Hill are now part of Ramapo Mountain State Forest.
Unfortunately, that day I managed to visit only the castle ruins. When exploring the neighborhood I came across a very curious bear family (again!). Bear mom started chasing me and I preferred to leave them alone.

The hopes and dreams, architecture, engineering along with hard work, now in ruins. Too often the story of Humanity. The video speaks loud and clear. Beautiful!

Looks like it was really hard to build so massive building on the top of the hill. Great work. Some people build, some spoil and burn(

@@walkingcam1 The estate must have been beautiful in its day. The views must have been tremendous as well. A shame it is. Repeated all too many times through history. One human or people build then in all too many cases it becomes no longer.

Isn't it great to find old pictures or drawings of these type places and compare ? I did that years ago with the old South Jersey pine towns from way back. A lot of foot work but it's worth it for the before and after photos. Never heard of that castle place. Is it near Forked river .

Hi John! That would be great to compare but i found only one low quality pic of this place. Probably since the castle had a short life, less 50 years Ramapo Mountain State forest
