Van's RV8 - Super Fast Homebuilt Aircraft

We meet Gary and learn about his Van's RV8 amatuer built aircraft and then we take it up in the air for a flight. This airplane is an excellent platform for aerobatics.

I was so touched, Garry, how you inadvertently got into flying. A real beaut story! Thanks Bobby and Laura for sharing the stories with the folks you meet, as you always do. Thanks so much. You seem to enjoy and channel ( pardon the pun!) both aviation and sailing - so it kinda fits my bill big-time.

Why would anyone want to spend over ten times the cash buying an aircraft by large manufacturers that go far slower than a good used RV8, have far less economy and cost a fortune to maintain? This and other Vans aircraft are the true common man's aerial transport. Lovely aeroplane. Beautiful landscape to fly over. Thumbs up!

My wife’s cousin’s husband built an RV-8A in the early 2000’s. I helped a little during a couple of visits, and helped rivet the main spar. As it was his second plane, he pretty much did the whole build from scratch (His first was a Murphy Rebel.). I got to fly in the RV a couple of times. It was a sweet little plane.

They are great airplanes. Vans makes an RV for pretty much everything. We have the RV-10 and love it. It works perfectly for our family of 4. If you want to do aerobatics there’s an RV for you, if you want a family plane there’s an RV for you, and the whole RV series performs amazingly.

Bob Pritchard True, there’s only one repairman certificate that’s ever issued to an experimental aircraft, but it has nothing to do with “repairing”...or doing any maintenance on the aircraft. The name “repairman’s certificate” is definitely misleading...I think it should be called something like the “condition inspection” certificate. So, if you didn’t build the airplane there’s only two people that can sign off on the annual condition inspection...1. The original holder of the repairman’s certificate and 2. An A&P. But once again, if it’s your airplane and you’re confident enough in your own mechanical skills, then you have every right to do as much work as you like on your airplane.

The ones at my flight school, which have IO-360-L2A's and no wheelpants easily get up to a 110 Knots on about a 2500-2550RPM setting which is still a fairbit below the redline.

the NEW ones do it.... of course, they have 180 HP and they don't carry any more weight than that 2 seat RV-8A does, lol (and they cost close to half a million dollars)

Wow! Only 1500 built? In 2001 I went to airventure, and it was like you could close your eyes and point in a random direction and would be one.

sinformant There are 1500+ RV-8s flying. There are over 10,600 RVs of all models flying. An average of 1.5 first flights per day and counting. Pretty amazing.
