Van Life - Driver's Side Scopema Swivel Seat (Ford Transit Van)

Installing the Ford Transit's driver's side Scopema swivel seat is trickier than installing the passenger side swivel seat. Based on our research we found these links useful:
Far out ride has been an indispensable resource so far for our build. Here is their article on the driver's side swivel seats. faroutride.com/driver-swivel-...
They had instructions for installing the swivel seat but it differed a bit from our installation. They installed a different swivel seat so we looked for some video guidance on YT.
We found these two videos that were extremely helpful and realized it would be pretty easy.
• Campervan Luna - Drive...
• Episode 9; Installing ...
Here we provide step by step instructions on how to install a driver's side Scopema swivel seat in your Ford Transit. This includes lowering the emergency handbrake, re-routing the airbag sensor wire and trimming the plastic on the outside of the driver's seat. Ours is a 2019 350 High Roof Extended Ford Transit. If you have an earlier model, it may differ.
We purchased the seat here:
www.vanequipped.com/
This seat added about 32 lbs to the van and these are the tools we used:
Angle grinder
Hack saw
Ratcheting Socket Wrench (AKA Ratchet)
Vehicle paint
7mm socket for airbag connector
TX40 bit for the Ford Factory seat bolts
Helpful but not essential:
Helper
Magnets
Hand vac or shop vac
Towel or drop cloth to catch metal dust
A positive attitude. Some form of caffeine usually helps attain this....lol. 😳

Thank you so much for this awesome video. i was able to fully understand the conversion process from start to end. there were no instructions with my kit and the seller had a video at 3 minutes and no closeups or naration. Almost useless. Yours saved my bacon. I used a dremel with metal cutoff wheel and a hacksaw with new metal blade to do the metal cutting. Was fairly fast and much safer. there are many cringe moments with that big grinder. yikes. glad you still had all 10 afterwards. Cheers (2018 Ford Transit 250, medium roof)

Please know it is so very appreciated that you are showing so many details. This is the kind of stuff that is glazed over in other videos, which leaves viewers left wondering about these details during their own modifications. Please keep up the great work and keep sharing the details. You're standing out as a supreme team in the vanlife scene!

Wow that was a lot of work but for sure worth it. No one is going to see the small scrapes and scuffs once the build is done. During the finishing stage you can look into a coverup for that. What the hell take it out. Who needs brakes anyways. Hahahahaha. Nice work guys. Cheers!!!

Thanks for the on-line manual! Important step I needed to GO through because of RWD Transit model was SHORTENING the handbrake cable as well - while lowering the handbrake, the cable is then falling down to kardan which could lead to cutting the cable. So for those having RWD/AWD 2021/facelifted version be prepare for cutting the cable for 65mm. Total installation time 4,5hrs

Great job! it's hilarious that I went through pretty much every hiccup and problem you discovered in the process and how I did all the same fabrication you did. The one thing I did was keep the upper piece of the hand brake cover and just pop it off when I need to swivel, that way it looks finished most of the time. The instructions are nowhere close to a simple install.

Great instructional video with one major caveat: OMG your left hand is in serious jeopardy @ 16:04 - 16:40 and again later around 18:30! You may feel like you have the skills to cut with a grinder holding your workpiece with your hand, but it's crazy dangerous. One slip and the grinder will jump, and you are super fucked. Use a vice to hold your workpiece, people.

This is a great video. I learned a lot. Already installed the passenger swivel and was nervous about the drivers side given the battery. You problem solved so many things that will make life easier for the rest of us. thank you! Now, am wondering how the extra height effects the fabulous view out the window.

Great video and instructions - than you! Did you have to lower the brake cable under the van by a couple of inches and did you have to protect it from rubbing on the sheet metal? This may be less a problem when using the black adapter provided with Scopema swivel.

  • @DoriMena

    @DoriMena

@@DoriMena Awesome! I Messaged Scopema and they said some have to cut the ends of the seats of the slider rail at a 45 degree angle. Which is what I had to do, for mine to swivel. Had to also take it off anyways to fix the seat belt harness being too short when fully extended forward.
