Van Life Basics Pros & Cons - Things You Should Know | VanLife 101

Ойын-сауық

Van Life is not for everyone. If you’re not comfortable emptying your toilet or going #2 in a plastic bag this may not be for you.
If you need the temperature set on a constant 72°, this may not be for you.
If you’re anxious about not knowing where you’re going to sleep or where you’re going, van life may not be your thing.
.
For me the benefits far outweigh the inconveniences.
For me van life represents freedom, travel, adventure and minimization.
It’s a resistance to the status quo.
It’s about leaning into the unknown in order to feel alive.
It’s about meeting new friends.
It’s about being in the moment.
It’s about appreciating simplicity
It’s not about confirming to all the “shoulds and should nots” that other people throw on you.
It’s asking what’s meaningful for me.
Can you go with the flow?
Does uncertainty terrify you or excite you?
Your mindset determines your experience.
Thank you all for being In the journey with me❤️

I LOVED this 'episode' as 100% of it resonated with me. I am in my early 60's, living in my van while holding down a fulltime job. One of my favorite sayings is: I might be over the hill, but what happens when you are? You pick up speed! Here's to many more years enjoying the downhill run 🤣

Simply outstanding job Bev 🙌 You really hit all the aspects of the nomad lifestyle. I especially loved you addressing the 'too old' comments. I get those too and it always spawns a great conversation. Age is irrelevant if one is in reasonably good health and really wants this experience. And as someone who is also nearing 60, I've never felt more vital and inspired, and I know this lifestyle amplifies those feelings in me.

Well said, Bev! I turned 55 on April 17th...10 days before my bday I bought my shortie/skoolie, whom I've named Wanda ☺ I started the conversion from bus to tiny-home-on-wheels on weekends while holding down two jobs....and my body was screaming at me to slow the "eff" down! I was so gung ho to get it done quickly that I forgot to be gentle with myself. So that's my first lesson learned with this new lifestyle. Second lesson was to make sure everything is secured....because like you, I forgot to throw out the dish water in my collapsible bucket, I took a turn, and water spilled all over my plywood (as I haven't yet laid the laminate....hoping to get that done this weekend). I agree with all your pros and cons....for me, the pros far outweigh the cons ☺ I'm in Canada but hope to meet you some day when I get down to the States 🤗

I know I’m stuck in a wheelchair now, but I’m still thinking about finishing my van. It will require a complete redesign, adaptive controls and I will have to hire someone to complete it, but it’s doable. It won’t be as luxurious as I originally planned. It will have to be more utilitarian. But, at least it will get my butt on the road. Thanks for all your encouragement and for being a friend.

Never know where you are going to park and if you get a spot and a cattle truck or a refer will pull in next to you. 🤣. Pro tip, always have imodium, a large plastic bag, and wet wipes(don't use the one's with bleach....been there done that🔥). 2 is 1 and 1 is none...

Thank you so much for this video. I just started full time, drove from NJ to Phoenix. I lived here for many years and missed my girlfriends so much. Crazy to come this time of year but I’m getting work done to finish my build and am staying with friends so at least I’m not in the heat. Pretty sure I’m tossing about 2/3 of what I put in the van and re thinking some of the layout. I had a blowout in Arkansas and a coolant leak in Albuquerque NM and all of that was thankfully resolved pretty easily and I made it here in one piece. I’m looking forward to finding cooler places to spend time and where I will sleep on any given night ! ❤️😊

Great video! I’m not full time but I travel for weeks at a time. I have a class B, for me I needed the wet bath(with black tank) I have IBS so it was a must have. I like to say the worst day in the van is better than a good day just sitting in an office or at home😉 one thing I need to get better at is being more spontaneous, I usually have my whole trip mapped out and worry too much about where to stay.

I hate to repeat myself, but you continue to amaze me. Insightful, wise, well-balanced, and downright fun/funny. Welcome from your 3rd best decade to your best decade soon. I'll be reaching dead center in that one this summer myself. I think that part of what's great is that while death doesn't seem to be lurking around every corner, it becomes obvious that time is not unlimited, so the time for putting up with BS is in the past, and the time to pursue what truly matters has become "now and always". With increasing urgency, yet no need for desperately compromising due to time pressure. By now, we know how to juggle multiple goals and responsibiities, when to seize an opportunity, when to keep options open, when to push ourselves hard, when to give our minds and bodies a break or a treat. And most importantly, we trust that we know (or can figure out) who is worth our time and attention once we find them.

I’ve also noticed some with a case of “what if’s “ which can also be extremely debilitating and grounding. Just get out there and give it a chance and deal with the what if’s when and IF they come along.
