Van Life and Truck Camper Comparison | 2021 Winnebago Solis vs 2021 Lance 650

Dan tries out #vanlife and discusses the pros and cons of a slide-in truck camper vs a factory built Class B Van. We break down the differences between the Lance 650 and Ram 3500 Longhorn overlanding duo and the stealthy Winnebago Solis 59P which sits on the Ram Promaster.

Something totally different but just as good as your other videos Dan. I was not looking to buy a camper van but your review might have triggered something :). Love the different content. As for your side channel, I can only speak for myself but I’d watch anything you put out just because the quality is always top notch, you’re always entertaining and listening to your real life reviews is always entertaining. Side note, on different subjects than performance vehicles, it would be cool to hear your wife’s opinion. Thanks to both of your for all the hard work put in the videos.

@Francois Boisvert Thanks Francois. I feel like at some level, once you become a parent, there’s a weird urge to take your kid and explore the outdoors sometimes. I’ve always been very outdoorsy, so this camper is certainly adding fuel to the fire. Speaking of adding my wife into the videos. We’ve been practicing a few skits and that’s an idea I’d like to incorporate. A more “civilian” outlook on cars versus a performance oriented perspective.

I had many RVs over the last 50 years, however I love my Host Everest triple slide truck camper the most. I have it on a 2020 Sierra dually gasser with an 8’ bed. On the open road, it gets 8.5mpg, but considering the room I have inside, with the amenities, and gas prices nearly a dollar cheaper than diesel, it is fantastic! At over 400hp, it takes on any grade without laboring! Heat,AC, hot dry bath, 2000watt inverter, runs microwave and toaster oven. It holds 71 gallons of fresh water. And 4wd gets me anywhere!

My family has an old Bluebird RV but my parents have been looking at a van or truck camper as my brother and I aren’t able to join them on as many trips anymore. In my opinion, truck campers are great for a family that goes out every couple of weekends but needs the space and extra vehicle. A van or RV are great with the added accessibility during travel and the included bathroom. For longer trips I really enjoy the van/RV life more. Really as long as you are getting out there and seeing the world though, who cares.

Really like the production value of your videos, you deserve more credit on that. One note on the Solis, the 59P is the only one WITHOUT an A/C. The 59PX and the Pocket both have A/C and the majority of B vans out there have A/C on the roof. It's certainly the case that it's harder to find one without an A/C, with the 59P being one of few examples.

Hey man! Just watching now. I’m glad you had the time to edit this one, I’m interested to see how it turned out. Damn this is a long video, however, I’m a big fan of how the trailer looks on the ram. I gotta say, these vans are so expensive lol, yet so useful. It’s nice in there I gotta say, I was shocked to see a bathroom inside your camper lol. I was not expecting to haha The AC in your camper is pretty top notch honestly. Technology is pretty damn cool. Speaking of cool, it’s getting chilly out here in Texas. 40s this morning. We just had a massive wind front come through. 60+mph winds for 3 days straight I’m surprised that you still get better mpg with a camper in tow than I do with nothing in tow 😂 Going offroading with a camper must be so much fun dude. I’d love to do that one day Yeah I remember the Ram having some stiff suspension. I liked the feel, but I think a van would be a more comfortable ride for people in the back. I’m surprised to see a safety tab in this video. The things you guys do aren’t usually considered safe to some people 😂 However, safety is also my lowest priority when it comes to anything involving solely myself. Others however, different story. You were showing me all these different inlets for gas, fuel, etc, and I was pretty amazed at how many different sources this thing could run on. It’s pretty insane, I’ve never been around campers in my lifetime so far, it seems complex, expensive, yet worthwhile. You covered a lot man, but I’m really glad to see all the details about these. It was explained well enough to where an individual with no experience could understand it. I enjoyed it, and it’s nice to see that even ugly (sorry lol) vans look good in the camera. Cheers, if I’d ever pick up a beer.

@Noble Vigilance Thanks man, honestly I had a hard time putting this one together because it was so different than what I normally do so I didn’t really know how to approach it. But glad I did. I feel like I have a lot to offer on this topic since I researched it so religiously for a while. Yeah vans are crazy expensive now. Good thing truck campers are still relatively affordable. Most people are pretty surprised to see that and also a full shower too. It was warm yesterday for Halloween but it’s in the low 50s up here now. We’re thinking of travelling south for a trip this month, maybe Nashville or GA, to escape the cold. So the van was more headache inducing when you’re actually walking around and doing stuff in the back for some reason. The suspension on the RAM with the camper loaded is definitely more comfortable. I might add air suspension in the future with 37s and a lift. I’m usually not concerned with safety either, I carry almost everywhere I can legally do so. Jason tells me all the time that more people are into RV-ing than cars, lol.

@Christopher Laboy Thanks man, that’s pretty impressive range. I’ve considered the extended tank, but in the past few trips that I’ve taken, I haven’t found myself in a situation where the extra range will benefit me unless I’m really off-grid for a long time. I average around 450 highway miles with the camper on and I can only drive about 8 hours max at a time. I saw the HQ19 when I was picking up my camper. It’s definitely a really nice rig. Not sure if I could justify the price, but certainly roomy for the doggos.
