Hey! James & Sarah here, back with the next episode in our van build series. This week we’re tackling the almighty job of installing our van conversion diesel heater.
The diesel heater instructions are rubbish, we need extra parts & nothing was straight forward. But after a fair few arguments - we weren’t in a good place in this video - we finally had heating in our van. And boy did it feel gooooood!
If you’re installing a diesel heater in your campervan, there’s also a blog post on our website detailing all the things we wish we’d known before we started the job. Click here to read: thewholeworldornothing.com/ca...
Thanks for watching! If you enjoyed this episode don’t forget to smash the thumbs up & if you’re new around here be sure to hit subscribe so you don’t miss the next episode.

    I have had my cheapo for 2 years used it probably 20 times , sometimes for 30 mins sometimes for 12 hrs over night and never had an issue with it at all, never had error codes and always started first time every time, well worth the £104, compared to a wabasto which is basically exactly the same thing

    Hi im a new subscriber :-) Not to bad installing the diesel heater.. on mine i have the fuel feed going from top of tank just in case of any leaks.. and i have my fuel pump underneath the vehicle on the solid chassis Beam.. i use a car sponge and rap the sponge round pump with two cable ties then cable tie it to the body.. i can not here it at all.. perfect for a good nights sleep.. I also use my diesel heater to heat up my hot water.. i used a computer radiator cooling system and made two 3D printed cones to go onto the radiator so therefore the pipe can be fitted from the diesel heater..

  • @TheWholeWorldorNothing

    @TheWholeWorldorNothing

    Thanks! It is pretty noisy but the pump doesn’t bother us too much. Where we placed it it’s under the mattress and in our “garage” so that dampens a fair amount of the noise, plus once it gets going in full swing it does calm down a little bit. Not 100% sure about mounting the pump under the van 🤔, don’t see any reason you couldn’t, just not sure it’s designed to go outside. Maybe if we were able to understand the instructions we’d have a better idea 🤣

    Don’t know if you’ve seen any of the comments from people installing a diesel heater and a “bobil bits water heater”? Seems like a way cheaper alternative than the setup we have and definitely cheaper than a combi heater. We can’t personally recommend them because we’ve not installed or used one but lots of people seem to be going for them now so might be worth looking at them as another potential option too. Just checked and they deliver to Belgium too 👍

    Hi It looks like your exhaust is going to push carbon monoxide out near the prop shift in the centre on the van! The exhaust should be placed so it pushes the CO out the side so you don't be any smell/CO into your van when parked up... Also the pump should be at an angle and it will be much more efficient/quieter . Most installation put the pump on the chassis.. I don't want you to be gassed when parked up ! Great vlog as always !

  • @TheWholeWorldorNothing

    @TheWholeWorldorNothing

    3 жыл бұрын

    Thank you ☺️ Yeah we positioned the exhaust pointing backwards under the van as the heater is on the door side so if it had been angled outwards then the fumes would definitely be going up and in through the door. It was the only place we could find which avoided that, given the length of the exhaust pipe. The pump is at an angle, as far as we could figure from what we understood of the instructions (which wasn’t much) it’s not too far from the angle suggested. We don’t actually find it too loud, the pump is under our mattress which must dampen some of the sound so it’s absolutely fine for us 😊 We’re sure it’s not the optimum installation but it’s worked brilliantly for us so far - no fumes 😀

  • @fosterb247

    @fosterb247

    I agree with you Dennis👍 @James and Sarah - You may not experience a problem, but this installation has introduced a CO risk which is avoidable. You want that poison gas out and away from the underside of the van where it can get trapped and linger when parked up ⚠ Don't rely on a CO alarm to warn you 'if ?' it happens - Remove the risk and extend the exhaust to discharge gases away from under your van. Great upload Thanks - Sorry for the safety alert 🤓

    At 23:20 why have you gone from the fuel filter with thick black pipe to thin clear pipe back to thick black pipe with 4 clips when you could have just used the black pipe and 2 clips ? apart from that, great job.

  • @alastairstaunton7081

    @alastairstaunton7081

    Жыл бұрын

    The thin clear pipe has two necessary attributes: a smaller internal diameter and non-elastic. The little pump is not able to push the volume of fuel that the black pipe would take. Because the clear line is so rigid, the pump's impulses are transmitted all the way to the burner rather than being absorbed by the side walls flexing. Unfortunately this means the clear line will not slide onto the metal and plastic ends of the pump, filter etc. So the black line is used to make the joints.

  • @TheWholeWorldorNothing

    We do have a carbon monoxide alarm in the van 🙂 It's not actually possible for us to put the exhaust on the sill as it's on the same side of the van as the door and our windows so this would definitely lead to fumes coming into the van and the pipe isn't long enough to reach the other side. We used the heater all over winter with no issues at all and have had the van checked by a mechanic who was fine with it - is there a specific concern with fumes hitting the prop shift? We're not mechanical at all so know nothing about cars ourselves! This has made us think again though, and we're going to fit a second carbon monoxide detector in the "garage" area just to be extra safe. Appreciate your concern 👍
