Van Build 12 volt Electric Review for van life a days use of solar and dc dc Promaster sprinter

At Van Of Action we are sharing the van life / nomad experience. Most folks who are designing a van build and dreaming of vanlife have never done either before. There are so many parts to every van build and so many different ways to use the vancamper when it’s complete. Some will be day and weekend campers, some will be overlanders and some will be nomads living full time off grid making their vans really tiny homes. In every case there will be different requirements, but some things will be the same. One of the biggest questions is about van electricity. Howe much do I need ? How much will I use ? How fast can it charge ? In this video Van Of Action shares our electrical usage over a 24 hour period on a typical day driving. Our van 12 volt system uses Renogy components - solar panels ca.renogy.com/products/solar-..., Charge controller ca.renogy.com/products/charge..., inverter ca.renogy.com/products/invert... and batteries ca.renogy.com/products/deep-c... - we also have a DC-DC charging capability but didn’t need it. We had our lithium batteries completely charged at as the sun went down on day one. After dark we powered our cabin lights and max air fan = www.maxxair.com/ and dometic CFX3 95 DZ dual zone fridge freezer. The next day we made breakfast and spent the day as we normally would - being nomads on the road. By the end of the day our batteries were completely recharged.

My rule always been "spend the least electricity possible", so I won't have to be stressed by the power meter, so avoid cooking and water heating using electricity, ideas that have been widely spread on KZread; doing that prevent the need to cover the roof of the van with solar panels, add a second alternator or fill the van with batteries. I will cook with propane, heat the water using the van engine cooling system, my only important electricity spend will be a 12V fridge.

Hey Charlevoix418 - thanks for taking the time to watch and share your experience. What I love about van life is the diverse opinions. My 300 watts takes up about 1/3 of my roof area and I can't imagine needing more, and my 200 Ah of Lithium batteries seem to hold more than I can use. Including cooking and heating my 6 gallons of hot water. I envy your options ..... Not being mechanical I didn't even consider adding an alternator. My Promaster has the small alternator so I didn't want to use my DC-DC system for anything other than emergency charging - so far I haven't needed it at all. With the ability to generate and store electricity I see no point in adding propane to the build. Most of our cooking is done outside the van anyway - but I wouldn't want the added worry of the tank and lines. I really appreciate you taking part ..... Stop back Dave

@@VanOfAction Agreed all electric is easier to live with and I love the fact that any cooking and heating can be covered by driving and sunlight rather than having to hunt for LPG.

HI Quickblood1. Thanks for watching AND READING the comments !!!! And taking the time to comment. You have no idea how much it makes me smile. Yes, I think having propane in a self-build van conversion introduced more concerns than it solves with the equipment that’s available today. I hope you’ll stop back and join the conversations ….. Dave.

I like the display on that Renogy battery monitor. Can it be used with components from other manufacturers? I have what you might deem an eclectic mix of electric components that I've collected over the years. Thank you.

Hi Avlisk - Thanks or watching and taking the time to ask - This monitor is cut into the negative wire as the last thing before the battery bank. I can't see any way it would know what type of components are installed down line. I also can't imagine how unsettling it would be to not have it after a couple cloudy days !! Here is a link to the Canadian Renogy page - pretty cheap peace of mind. ca.renogy.com/500a-battery-monitor-with-shunt/?gclid=CjwKCAiAhqCdBhB0EiwAH8M_Gv4Xw2syrZvoukMwHnUL8ArAo2DS3MHJHMxfGoapwCT0Zg9Zj9tjXhoChCAQAvD_BwE Be well - stop back and Merry Christmas .... @@VanOfAction Thanks for the quick reply, especially being today. (Merry Christmas.) I'm south of the border in frozen Maine. I have a LiFePo4, solar panel, a DC block that powers a fridge and a fan in my little van, and somehow it works, which is a Christmas miracle! I'm still learning and building a bigger systems for an off-grid cabin. Is that monitor or where it cuts in to the line the same thing as a "shunt"?

@@avlisk They refer to the piece that gets cut in as a shunt - I really don't know what it means - but it all comes in the same box and it was really simple to install :) money well spent !!

Hey Y’all! Waving from Houston, Texas, USA! Do you folks know of Rob and Jan Can Van on KZread? youtube.com/@RobandJanCanVan. They’re a full time couple living in Canada as well…I was so blessed a month or so ago when they came to my house to meet up with me while they were touring America! Rob is such a comedian and he literally cracks me up…such lovely people! I’ve already decided to rate your videos (and, this is only the second one I’ve seen so far) right up there with RVerTV…he does great travel videos like y’all do! Have a blessed day and safe travels! ~Jim~
