VERY Cheap Games ➡️ www.humblebundle.com/games/me...
The gaming industry is shifting away from console exclusivity, with major players like Microsoft, Sony, and Square Enix moving towards multi-platform strategies. This change is driven by the high costs of developing triple-A titles and the desire to reach a wider audience. Square Enix is planning to release its games on all platforms and stores as quickly as possible, while Microsoft is experimenting with releasing its games on Playstation and Switch. Sony is also bringing more games to PC. The trend suggests that PC gaming is becoming the most advantageous platform for accessing a wide range of games.

They wanna take a game that should take 5 years and put it out in 1.5 to 2 years and then spend more than the game cost to make, on marketing, and then blame folks not getting a sequel on the fact that gamers didn't support, when it sold 5 to 10 million copies lol. Should never cost that much to break even. @@SkywardKing Objectively wrong. Games get expensive because of graphical fidelity, not because of content. And consumers are the ones who asked for that. People now are saying otherwise because they like the dopamine fix they get by feeling morally superior to corporations, but it's a lie. For crying out loud, it wasn't that long ago that Insomniac got harassed because the first "Spider-Man" game had a "graphic downgrade" because the final game took away a few puddles in a scene that had been shown before. And this phenomenon hasn't disappeared at all. You only need to go discussions about the Switch 2 and people are losing their minds about the console not being as powerful as current gen consoles, because "can you imagine how "Tears of the Kingdom" would have looked like if it was on a "real console"?". Mark my words: as soon as the dust of this whole AAA industry debacle is settled, people will go back to bitch and moan about graphics as they've always done since the freaking 90s.

    A huge part of why I think PC is the better gaming platform is the longevity of the library. I started my Steam account in 2004 and bought Half Life 2. Today, I can still load up Half Life 2 and play it on modern hardware like the Steam Deck just fine. In that same time, the PS2 was the current console. Sony has released the PS3, the PS4, the PSP and the PS Vita in that same time frame. Today, if you have a PS5, you cannot play your PS2, PS3, PSP, or PS Vita games unless you've repurchased some kind of "Playstation Classics" re-port or remaster. So I still have access to my 20 year old PC games on PC, and I fully expect in another 20 years I'll be able to continue to play those now 40 year old PC games in the retirement community. (Probably via neural interface or something.)

    If the moment games aren't exclusive anymore everyone suddenly gravitates towards PC, it really begs the question, what is the point of consoles anyway? I think Sony and Microsoft really have to ask themselves this question, what are those consoles actually offering people. I think more and more gamers are becoming aware of how restrictive and limited the PS5 and Xbox actually are, and if they really want people to prefer those consoles over PC they have to have more things to offer rather than just holding a bunch of games hostage.

    Memories from junior high and high school, there was time for games but less money. Now less of an issue with money but time ends up being the big concern. Between work, gym time, commute hours, during the week there's only maybe about an hour or half an hour for hobbies. Making a fuss over which console or handheld is the best eats into that time. For physical game fans, consoles still make sense but that really depends on the game and making sure it doesn't need day one patches, DLC or important updates. Otherwise lack of exclusives on PS5 doesn't make it the most appealing option for me over the PC.

  • @Zendariel87
    @Zendariel872 ай бұрын

    I do want to bring some game developer insight for the exclusive discussion. And I want to start with this, if developer is able, multiplatform is usually best, but there are caveats. When you go multiplatform you need to base your design for the lowest target. For example if your plans require a lot of system memory you might not be able to support Xbox and switch. Or you need to mitigate this in some way, possibly have two designs. Usually just compromise. If you want to make the most impressive title, having one platform that you can focus on makes it easier and sets boundaries. If you get the platform holder to help with the engineering, this could allow you to do things you would not guess possible since in most cases, they know the platform better than you do. Usually the scale of online features and user generated content can add a lot of complications the more platforms you have. You also need to be able to budget accordingly, the more ambitious the game the more you need to budget per platform. Now tools and experience can mitigate all of this a lot, but you need time for the team to learn the skillset, the tools required and to work together. And what both Larian and Square enix brought up, keeping the team together is really beneficial for continuing development to other games.

    The thing the console manufacturers fucked up on was believing that any single title sells one console over the other. A game selling a system was a true statement back in the 90s when online multiplayer was a PC only thing and it was technically difficult due to dial up Internet at that point what console your friend has was nearly irrelevant. Once online gaming came to consoles the sole deciding factor for the overwhelming majority of consumers on which box to buy is what their friends are on. The idea of a "system seller" game is mostly dead outside the customers that buy multiple consoles in a generation and even with those consumers they likely would have bought them anyways.

    Sega in the mid to late 90s was being badly managed. There's a lot in common with what's happening with Xbox right now. The Saturn had a tone deaf launch in North America, which they never recovered from. There was no cohesive strategy to get compelling software for the system. On top of that, there was considerable infighting between Sega of Japan and Sega of America. Dreamcast was a Hail Mary pass, but they'd already lost a lot of loyal fans due to the Saturn's botched launch and quick discontinuation. Sega then dropped an absurd amount of money developing Shenmue, which ended up being a commercial failure. By 2001, they were so deep in the hole, they had no choice but to drop hardware.

PC Handhelds is mainly for PC gamers, but will still hurt the sales of "Switch 2" as PC gamers won't have much interrest in it like with Switch which didn't have any competitor for years. It's been 17 years since the PS3 and Xbox360 were launched, a particularly dark point in gaming history for the PC. Every month gaming magazines would announced the death of PC gaming and regurgitating an endless wave of articles comparing how superior consoles are to the PC. Epic Games packed up their Unreal 3 from the PC to entice console players. One PC-only genre after another moved to consoles until only the RTS and MMOs are the only exclusives left. 2024: current consoles are pretty much custom PCs without mouse and keyboard. Much of their exclusive titles are on the PC and Epic Games is trying to entice PC players back. And both Sony and Microsoft are racing to capture as many PC players as possible because their console war is becoming too unsustainable.

    I always thought that first party exclusivity helped Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft because it brought players into their ecosystem, which then leads to people buying additional games from the Nintendo e-shop, PlayStation Store, and Xbox store. For example, a person might stop buy the Nintendo e-shop to buy a Zelda game, see a Final Fantasy game on sale, and then buy the Final Fantasy game that is on sale. Nintendo then gets money from both the Zelda game that the customer stopped by the e-shop for AND the Final Fantasy game that the customer had no intention of purchasing but just happened to buy because they spotted it on sale while browsing for their Zelda game. This same customer may then get into the habit of checking the e-shop again and now and then to see what is on sale. Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo still have a tough decision on their hands regarding whether it’s more profitable to make their games exclusive to their platform in order to draw people into their respective online shops to spot other games that are on sale, or to release their games on multiple platforms simultaneously. I definitely agree with Shawn Leyden regarding live-service games. The profit from live-service games comes from kids playing with their friends and then begging their parents to buy the latest skins, weapons, and armor. It’s important to get the game out in multiple platforms in order to get as many kids to play the game immediately on whatever device they can immediately get their hands on whether it be a console, PC, tablet, or phone (example: Fortnite). These kids are not in the business of spotting other games on eShop and deciding to buy them while they are browsing. They are in the business of buying the latest gear for their live-service game. It is very important to cash in on a live-service game’s popularity immediately because the popularity of live-service games can quickly wane over time. In some cases, player engagement drops in half or less in about a month making it all the more important increase the ‘funnel size’ of their micro-transaction funds immediately by making it available on multiple platforms on the very first day of release.

With every console basically being like pcs, there is nothing technical preventing you from porting over. Think about the ps3 cell architecture. Very advanced for the time, very hard to develop for. Ps5? Series? Even switch? All basically x86. Budget is also too high for AAA games and indies don't have a lot of money so obviously they wanna release on as much as possible. The platform owner fronts the cost for development, so if the game is a stinker then the platform owner bears all the cost, but if the game is a hit then once the platform owners break even, the rest of the profit goes to the developers. Tell that to Nintendo then. For a company that produces hardware, it makes complete viable sense to have exclusives to sell hardware, it's not rocket science. You say Rebirth is a failure but didn't state any numbers, fine. I've stated before that the actual issue is development costs and marketing. There's too much inflation and leeches in the industry at the moment that makes any "AAA" title to be a loss. A title being exclusive is a small fraction in the equation, again, Nintendo is the golden standard when it comes to this. The end result as you see the market shift is for "smaller" and "cheaper" titles. Technology will regress to mediate overhead costs for companies.

  • @VOAN

    The thing is Nintendo doesn't throw money at third party developers to make exclusives for them, they made their own exclusives and those exclusives are ones they own. Sony and Microsoft choose to port their games to other platforms which is fine but in the long run that will come back to harm their consoles. A consoles needs 1st party exclusives too but at the same time also needs third party titles as well whether exclusives or not. One thing videogame doesn't do anymore is to release different game sharing the same title on multiple console, that would had been wild and unique. Back in the old days different consoles got an Aladdin, Power Rangers, TMNT, Shadowrun, Sonic 1, Sonic 2, Sparkster, and Batman Returns but despite the same titles, all are actually different unique game exclusive to that console for example Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 on Game Gear are not ports of Sonic 1 and Sonic 2 that was released on the Sega Genesis, Sparkster on Genesis and Super NES are actually different game and not just ports, TMNT Tournament Fighters for NES, Sega Genesis, and Super NES are all unique fighting games and not port of each other, etc.
