Valve is NOT DONE With the Steam Deck

Some people think we need a Steam Deck 2 sooner rather than later. I'm not so convinced.

The Steam Deck single-handedly converted me to PC gaming. Being able to hit the power button and instantly play for 5-10 minutes at a time has allowed me to get back into gaming for the first time in years. This thing is revolutionary.

My daughter broke her arm last night, and is getting used to all the things she can't do - such as play with a normal controller. I love my Deck already, but the ability to change all the controls so she can play games, one handed using only one side and the track pads, is incredible. It made her day. What a great and versatile device.

Also a software developer, I had pretty much abandoned PC in favour of console for the ease of use and low entry cost. The Steam Deck is the only thing that brought me back, I can tinker as little or as much as I want and I have fewer stability problems than I ever did on PC with driver issues, crashes etc. Not to say it doesn't happen, but I definitely have fewer issues. I totally agree, I just want to sit back and relax in the evening, not be reinstalling drivers because my favourite game has decided to start crashing.

I just recently got my own steam deck and honestly, and entirely on my part, it's just been overwhelming and at times frustrating because I went straight to installing Minecraft and Skyrim modpacks as well as a few plugins and such. That being said, neither of those took more than a day which is a win in my book. Just hope I get used to the touchpad aiming controls so I get to play, more than 2% of my library (mostly shooters)

There's a good chance they'll release both their VR headset and a new Steam Machine before a next gen Steam Deck. I'm not kidding, btw. There's a legitimate chance of a new Steam Machine releasing alongside Valves' new headset, which would both work in tandem for console-like PCVR gaming. There's leaks, patents, code names, and photos of a weird console in their office from like 2019. My only hope is that we also get an official Steam OS distro for general systems.

Nah I highly doubt it will be that long, I suspect 3 to 4 years, because 5 or 6 years is too long in the PC space and that will pull many of us towards the rivals of the Deck, whereas 3 to 4 years is enough time for enough hardware progress to happen to do a decent upgrade. Think of it a bit like mid-gen console upgrade, which is a better fit compared to what consoles normally do of 6-8 years which is way too long. 3 to 4 years will allow Valve to keep pace with rivals whiles also keeping pace with newer games. Because of this, I think 2025 might be a good time for Valve to release a Deck 2 once the new gen APU's are released or whatever custom job Valve is working on, any longer then that and it's going to be hard to justify the Deck with how aggressive rivals are on price cutting and the performance gap will end up getting too big. Remember guys, all these devices are in the same playing field, playing the same games, if a rival offers better, gamers will shift, unlike consoles where loyalty and games exclusive plays a big part on what they buy.

@@paul1979uk2000 I'm a valve fanboy and I agree completely. If Valve wants to compete, that's the cycle they'll choose. However, we have known Valve to be without competition in the past... my meaning is they simply put something forward that is without comparison for at least several months before anyone can catch up. Whatever they're cooking... we're going to have to let them cook. They have all the cards. You talk about competition, and I agree, as it regards anything they've ever made in the past. If "Steam Deck 2" is JUST a pc/handheld, it will face competition. Basically I'm trying to say that it will probably be a LOT MORE than just that.

Thing is, Steam Deck users, as this video says "Don't like to tinker". TOO many titles, both old and new, require you to go to desktop mode and screw around in folders instead of just hitting up options and changing a few settings. Can't get it to run Dragon's Dogma 2 at a decent framerate, and with good graphical quality. Best I've seen anyone run it at looked pretty bad and was at like 20fps outside of Vernsworth (the fps killer). Ally runs it like a champ at just below medium settings. The SteamDeck is still a King. People only want a Steam Deck 2 because there is no Steam Console. If valve launched a powerful Steam Console and VideoCard addon that turned the Steam Console into the Steam Console Pro, kind of like Xbox Series X/S. Then people would not want a steam deck 2 so quickly. Also, imagine if you only needed to buy an addon to turn series S into series X.

To be fair, it used to be the case, but Linux just needed someone to come up with a package solution that just works, SteamOS isn't perfect but for a lot of gamers, it just works. Linux could have done this themselves but there are too many voices pulling in all directions. At the end of the day, for Linux to gain any traction, it needed software compatibility with Windows software, it doesn't matter how it's done, just as long as it works and performs, Valve are doing that with Proton, after all, most users and gamers don't care what is under the hood, but they do care if the software and games run or not, basically, Linux needs strong software compatibility with Windows for many of us to consider Linux, after all, I'm sure you've heard it a million times how many have said, they would like to move to Linux but it doesn't have this or that software, I've heard it countless times that software compatibility is the number 1 issue that holds many of us from adopting Linux, that's slowly changing thanks to the Steam Deck, but more can be done.

Whether or not the steam deck is "showing it's age" really depends on what games you're trying to play on it. You may as well say you only play AAA games, and if that's the case you probably shouldn't have bought a steam deck in the first place. Meanwhile indie games and older gems work a dream, and that back catalogue is getting bigger and bigger as Valve continues to push for more and and more games to be deck verified. I'm particularly interested in seeing more games from the PS360 get ported to PC (or verified if they are already ported), because they would run perfectly on deck (and the xperia and rpcs3 emulators still leave a lot to be desired).

Maybe because I spent the whole day working in front of a PC, the desire to sit in front of it to game started to fade away. I know a lot about tikering with PC's and PC games, but I just didn't want that anymore. I just wanted to sit down and play like the old times, and the Steam Deck managed to get me back to that. I had a Steam account for about a decade that I rarely touched but ever since I got the LCD steam deck my PC gaming has exponentially increased. Now if a game comes out for all systems I prefer to get it on steam over all other platforms. My only gripe with the deck would be that I wish it did have a high performance profile so that I could play the more demanding 3D games at the sacrifice of battery life. I'm fine with all low settings at 30 FPS because I only play single player games anyway. I also rarely play for longer than two hours at a time. I was really intrigued with the ally but decided to go with the OLED instead and have no regrets.

Added some *QoL* *improvements* for my Steam Deck 512 LCD over the weekend…. *Redream:* For some reason, this won’t launch from the EmuDeck/EmulationStation. I was stuck using Flycast and didn’t like how some games ran from it. I needed Redream to be a standalone emulator but still launch from the Steam library. My other big issue with Redream is it won’t remember the path if the Dreamcast ROMs were placed in the folder where EmuDeck reads them from. So I had to separate all my Dreamcast games from the big emulation folder. It’s now in the internal storage next to the Redream files and it can now remember the path. Also, changed redream to redream.exe from the actual file name because Steam can’t find it if it’s the former. Then edited the name again in the Steam gaming mode menu. Dreamcast games plays closer to flawless again. Dreamcast is my 2nd favorite console of all-time and it bothered me that I couldn’t use the emulator I wanted until figuring it out over the weekend. The only thing is the games won’t show up in EmulationStation anymore. I can live with it as long as I can play the games nicely. *Pluto* *TV:* Since getting the Pluto TV and Tubi apps about 5+ years ago, I rarely use Netflix anymore. Pluto TV is a Paramount service but three of my favorite sitcoms are on there. All I want from it is a channel that plays The Golden Girls all the time. Maybe toss in Martin, The Wonder Years, Doogie Howser MD, and another comfort soup show like Northern Exposure. Doogie Howser and The Wonder Years used to appear on ABC, so they’re more likely owned by Disney. I do love the Price is Right channel during the Bob Barker era. Watched a little of it last night. It’s the game show I’d watch if I wasn’t in school or during summer vacation. I can live with the ads as long as it’s free and they have a great selection of content which they do. I personally don’t need any of them on any streaming service since all I do is use torrents and then save them on my Google Photos using an old Pixel 3 which has unlimited storage saver for life. The limit is 1080p. Everything from Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, Loki, WandaVision, Andor, The Mandalorian, The Boys, Mike Judge’s Beavis and Butt-Head, Stranger Things, Cobra Kai, Heels, Ted (2024), Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, they’re all there uploaded on my Google Photos. This June is going to be packed: House of the Dragon S2 vs. The Boys S4 vs. The Acolyte? I think HOT D wins out. The lore is more interesting. But I do love The Boys. *Tubi:* If you know movies like I do, Tubi has superior content over Netflix. I have an account and basically keep adding movies on my watchlist. Tons of foreign and softcore porn movies! Has many of the Showa Godzilla movies. Has my Gilligan’s Island too while Pluto TV covers I Love Lucy, Three’s Company, and Married…with Children. Pluto TV + Tubi are practically unbeatable since they’re free. Just need to live with the ads. Rewatched Get Out (2017) again on Tubi last night. *Kodi:* So I couldn’t really create an app to add to Steam for Google Photos using Microsoft Edge. So what I’ll do instead is download some movies and TV shows from my Google Photos and save it onto my Deck. Then will have Kodi play it. I was going to use VLC but it doesn’t seem it can be added onto Steam. And Kodi seems to have a much nicer interface. I have over 1400 movies and tons of TV shows in one of my three Google Photos accounts. But the only one downloaded for the Steam Deck is video game related. It’s a documentary called Console Wars (2020) which can be found on Netflix. I read the Blake J. Harris book back in 2014. I may include 8-Bit Christmas (2021), both live action Sonic movies, and the recent Super Mario movie for it. I really want a complete set of the animated Shenmue series on my Steam Deck. I use magnetdl and I can’t find it complete. While I love the original Final Fantasy VII game, I didn’t care for Advent Children. That movie dragged. Most of my favorite TV shows and movies are on my multiple Android smartphones. The other ones added are KZread, Gmail, Reddit, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge. That’s a total of 10 “non games” if you include the 4 other ones mentioned earlier and EmulationStation. I set every app / website launcher to the native resolution of 1280 x 800. Looked through Google images to crop thumbnails for each of them. What really boosted my experience was finally figuring out each controller template. Set most of them to web browser and it’s like browsing from a tablet. This thing can be used for a decade if you really wanted to. Just replace the battery every few years. When I got my Deck nearly two months ago, battery health (which can seen under desktop mode) read 97%. But I’ve been using it so much, it’s down to 92%. I honestly thought I would barely use it after the initial honeymoon phase wore off but it’s been the complete opposite for me and I carry it with me every day since I’m a gig driver. The Steam Deck is frickin’ amazing. If I’m bored playing games, I’ll use it to do something else like watch porn or read Reddit posts. I only bring one smartphone now because the Steam Deck is so complementary to any smartphone whether it’s iPhone or Android since it’s essentially a PC as well. It’s the G.O.A.T. It made me less interested for the Switch 2. F Nintendo! Cheers to Valve! 🍻

I would hate to see a steam deck 2 right now knowing what hardware is out there available to them currently. They kind of struck gold with the APU they use in the steam deck because for so many reasons except power it is perfect for handheld gaming. Battery life is good, efficiency is great and it plays most games just fine… the steam deck is the first device I ever used to emulate games and it was incredible because my childhood memories were not ruined, emulation is so good today that when I play old games it appears how my brain remembers it 😂 if I play on original hardware my memories are ruined because I don’t remember them looking so bad but upscaled emulation and other tweaks you can do in emulation software keeps my memories intact and it’s just epic… not steam deck exclusive ofcourse because we have so many devices that can do it but the deck just gets it so right. Valve just know what they are doing, they know why the deck works, nobody wants 30w plus and 1 hour gaming while still not achieving 60fps in reality. I hope valve wait as long as they need to get it right second time round.

I loved the term "gracefully transition" I believe the Deck truly embodies that, as a concept, from navigating the UI, launching games, editing controls, etc. it handles everything not only easily but with a grace proper to the device, the only times I feel I'm "struggling" is when using a third party dock or controller, I still have my steam controller from back in the day and having valve build an ecosystem around their next step in hardware would be a dream come true. Thank you for the amazing video and keep up the good work!

One thing every reviewers fail to mention is Steam deck has a learning curve. It may be easy but some people just don't have the time to learn it. I myself even as a computer major, did get frustrated here and there mainly because I'm used to windows and there's bunch of resources you need to read up to ensure you did it correctly. It is a beast of a machine, but I wouldnt really recommend it to casual gamer

Its a much better middle ground than the switch when I'm able to just bounce my cloud save and continue on my set up. Go grab balatro, set the deck to 4w, enjoy smooth 60 or even 90fps, bask in the 12 hours of battery life and thats peak steam deck gaming. Then get emudeck sorted and play retro games, ps1, ps2, gamecube, whatever really - at much higher fidelity than they were originally and still get massive battery life, this is just the deck in its absolute element. far be it from me to tell you what to enjoy though, if you play AAA games and the performance is good enough for you then good on ya dude, enjoy it!
