    Incase Bill sees this, I saw a comment about "saving everyone time", but I want to let you know he does not in fact speak on behalf of "everyone". I actually really enjoy longer form videos because I can listen to them as a background noise while doing tasks around my house without having to break focus to find another video. If I wanted short form info I would be watching reels and tik toks. On another note I used to use Xbox's overlay on my PC to capture clips during games, but half the time it would bug out due to poor optimization. I'm really glad steam has a better functioning type of video capture tool that I can use going forward with now both my PC and Steam Deck.

    I appreciate you. The great thing about being an old man is I just don’t care what people that have yet to grow an attention span think about me. If my video is too long for them that’s their problem. Not my problem. There are plenty of people like you that appreciate context. Thanks for watching. And the kind words.

    @@NerdNest To quote Shakespeare, "brevity is the soul of wit." To paraphrase, "stop wasting time". As far as i can see with this video you tease a subject with the title and then drone on about loosely related things before you get to the subject of your video. To restructure this so that it is more efficient, just say "Valve just announced they are bringing screen recording to the Steam Deck and Steam platform and here's a few thoughts I had," and then go into whatever your tangent is. People are more willing to listen if they feel like their time is being respected.

    I see no issue with them 'sherlocking' these plugins, because it's not like they were paid apps, and it takes the feature which benfits everyone and makes it more official! Plus screen recording was a much needed feature that should have been there within the first year of launch imho.

    Valve didn't go far enough with the Sherlocking of VibrantDeck. You can't turn the saturation all the way down so that the screen looks black & white, and you can't turn it all the way up to get the saturation intensity that VibrantDeck could. I had more granular control with the 3rd party plugin.

    I would even argue this is `sharelocking`. The features were made specificaly for said hardware community and it was then improved on by the owners of that hardware without any additional cost other than your internet packets (if). It also expands not only on the SteamDeck but on all platforms (IDK aboyt macos?) where Steam is available.

    Actually, most people use the capture function of their GPUs, this is unfortunate for Nvidia owners given how garbage GeForce Experience is. However, there's hope for them too, because the Xbox game bar offers the same functions in any windows PC. So, your user case scenario is reduced to people who play on Linux, *and* have a Nvidia GPU.

  • @WarMomPT
    @WarMomPT28 күн бұрын

    Interesting; I don't think it's for me just because I'm so ingrained in my OBS setup (and I'm more for single-player stuff where I'm recording set sections rather than multiplayer games where I want clips), but for people who need clips on the fly and in the background (especially without something like nvidia's thingy) this could be great. I'd be really interested to see what the options are like, if quality is just a slider or if you can do more granular ffmpeg / OBS settings, if it captures all audio or hooks the game audio directly, etc. I will admit that when I had the Switch, I was a lot more willing to just hold down that 'capture clip' button than I was on PC with OBS' replay buffer, even if I dumped almost all the clips in the end, ease of use is great. One concern I have though is that this will most likely just keep writing your replay buffer to internal storage, and because it's an SSD in the deck's case, you're constantly writing to a device that has a write limit - though iirc pretty much all testing in the past five years has pointed to this pretty much being a theoretical limit, rather than a practical one.

  • @disasterincarnate
    @disasterincarnate28 күн бұрын

    the screen recording sounds great, esp if you are allowed to pick where the recordings go to, we would have 3 instant options, the internal ssd, a custom location, so maybe to an external device, or another standard option /dev/shm/ which saves to a ramdisk the deck/linux sets up by default, the saves can go there, then afterwards the user can save the final result to ssd and the files(s) in /dev/shm/ can be deleted, getting our ram back.

    This is the best approach, path of exile has been wildly successful implementing features that typically needed 3rd party apps to have. I hope they sherlock in that decky music control plugin. One of the peak gaming moments in my history was uploading mp3s to my xbox 360. They implemented some kind of feature where devs can let the system know when dialogue or cutscenes are playing to pause the music, playing games like assasins creeed to my own soundtrack while still experiencing the depth of the story automatically pausing the music when needed was such a HUGE experience ill never forget. An idea truly ahead of its time.

I recently started playing hardcore in Diablo 4 (so with permadeath) and considered that dying would be bad enough, but dying and having no idea what did it would be terrible. Considered this because I saw even a seasoned Diablo streamer (Raxx) die and wonder what happened. If you then can't look back on your video it's a lot harder to accept and move on... I would arfue that these features are common on most systems and that any OS has future plans to continuously add new features. It wouldnt be right for devs to steal that from Valve. Otherwise they wouldnt need to make anything new and just be forced to let devs make plugins. Recording a screen is a basic feature. For me to swoop in and make a plugin is fine BUT i dont get to hold that feature hostage. Even if mine is better than valves.

    is it sure-lock like a lock or is it sherlock like the irish

  • @eziothedeadpoet
    @eziothedeadpoet27 күн бұрын

    The feature wasn't sherlocked. Due to the complexity and api features they also implemented and integrated as an api with Dota 2 and CS2 for automated highlight markers this goes beyond the scope of any third party plugin that integrated OBS replay functionality. They probably started working in parallel or possibly even before the community plugin development started. I could see it with the vibrancy plug-in and sliders but even there it just feels like they copied android phone settings where the phone defaults to a natural saturation but you can tweak your OLED screens to be more vibrant. But then again this is mostly semantics since in the end the community plug-ins were all open source for the community and now more people will get the same features and even improved versions of them. And as with most "gimmicky" and "tinkery" open source tools and add-ons they usually get made because the author wants a feature and likes the challenge to make it and wants to share the experience with others. With Valve taking over similar functionalities and adding more options to then they allow those 3rd pary developers to focus on other cool projects so unlike with other cases "stealing" features this is a win for everyone and no one loses. I am not into the apple ecosystem but to me most of the times when they "stole" a feature it has been at the expense of those 3rd party developers that often even got burried in the app store by apple tweaking their recommendation algorithms and search results.

    You're probably thinking of nvidia cards for almost if not a decade now. They added hardware encoders for nvenc h.264 to them a while back. Or you could be thinking of when they added shadowplay which coincided with that anyways I think. That said if memory serves it wasn't long after that AMD did the same, not for nvenc of course since that's nvidia's.

    One thing I hope to see, considering Steam Deck is a Console. We get more Steam Deck presets. Switch is Proof that sheer optimization goes a long way. Steam could pave the way for more games to be optimized for the deck and thus helping lower end Systems.

    As a dev, not that companies don't do that. But you are missing part of the picture, color temp isn't just a slider and they want to keep accuracy correct. iirc they swapped to 3D luts which is why the color temp addon doesn't work. That alone is not only going to require programmers but people specialized in handling color. Along with tools and other processes. To implement things correctly takes time, I'm sure it was in the works way before anything else. But remember too they were dropping another deck so that increases the work too. Same thing with clips, sure you can get a solo dev made one or whatever but again to implement it correctly and have it use the servers and not slowdown games and all that requires so much time. I just feel like implying valve is just stealing these ideas from other devs is kinda off point.

    Idk there's a top comment with a lot of thumbs up just saying they save us 15 minutes with the info Valve adds recording to Steam Deck There's a lot more info here and it's only half true. Every PC with Steam gets it, not just Steam Deck, and there's a lot more to it like timelines, device interoperability using QR codes, dedicated GPU hardware usage - don't let that person trick you and listen to the video if this sounds interesting. Thanks

    To be fair I don't mind that Valve finds useful plugins and implements it into SteamOS. After all they are free and not taking peoples livelihoods away unlike Apple. Who has a whole host of advantages over the average developer. They own the platform you use, the store which sells it, AND they make a competing product.... That's just evil.
