ValueAct CEO: This is the next $100 billion company

CNBC's David Faber sits down with Trevor Milton, CEO of Nikola Motors and ValueAct's Jeff Ubben to discuss their deal to take Nikola Motors public.
As the sustainable investing movement gains traction investors have increasingly shied away from traditional energy stocks. But ValueAct Capital’s Jeffrey Ubben believes that oil and gas companies that are working to clean up their operations can belong in portfolios focused on sustainable companies.
The activist investor, who is the co-portfolio manager of the ValueAct Spring Fund, said that he’s been buying shares of BP since the company is working to instate more environmentally-friendly policies.
“They can be part of the solution. They can move to carbon capture, and hydrogen and other things with their capital spend to become a company of the future,” he told CNBC’s David Faber on Wednesday.
From a more traditional investing perspective, he noted that the company has done a “great job” in the last three years financially and has a “fine” balance sheet.
As the energy sector faces mounting pressure from investors, BP in February announced that it plans to be carbon neutral by 2050.
Even as BP works to make its operations more environmentally friendly, Ubben noted that given how out of favor the sector is with investors, it could be hard to find a buyer on the other side. The sector has shed 28% over the last year, compared with the S&P 500′s 12% gain.
But Ubben also said that as an investor it’s possible to push for meaningful change, which is why companies like BP can be included in ESG portfolios. The popular acronym denotes when a company’s environmental, social and governance factors are taken into consideration when someone is choosing whether or not to buy a stock.

This company probably wasn't able to raise money through the private market (sophisticated investors) so they plan on dumping it on retail investors (unsophisticated investors). 1.) This company is a green company so it allows investors to think that by investing in it they are helping in the fight against climate change. 2.) This company is pitching itself as the next big tech stock which allows investors to use the stock as a get rich quick scheme. Basically, Nikola Motors is to college-educated liberals what a televangelist is to uneducated conservatives. I am a huge fan of hydrogen fuel cells and Nikola’s vision. However, Tesla is currently ahead of Nikola Motors and why: 1) Nikola manufactures little in-house, relying nearly 100% on global manufacturers. If one is not the captain of your own ship, it can easily sink. 2) Currently No Nikola USA assembly plants for North America markets: No hard completion date given, No capacity figures given 3) Currently No Nikola National USA hydrogen filling service centers or hard date time lines for Nationwide buildout to fuel Nikola’s hydrogen fuel cell Vehicles 4) Currently No Nikola National dealer sales and repair centers 5) No safety and crash test data provided, still in R/D 6) What is the true break even analysis? How many trucks must Nikola sell/lease per month and at what price just to cover all monthly overheads, construction and outfitting costs of the following? A)Truck assembly plants B)National Hydrogen fueling centers C)Warranty claims; dealer sales, repair and parts centers, etc. Conclusion: Nikola needs hundreds of billions of dollars💰and years if not decades to have a complete reliable national hydrogen fuel cell service centers for their end to end zero emissions solution needed to compete head to head with Tesla and emerging Ford, GM, Toyota Mercedes etc. in the electrification commercial semi truck and consumer pickup truck markets.

@I Love Tesla’s I am a huge fan of hydrogen fuel cells using electrolysis to extract hydrogen powered by green technologies via wind, solar, hydroelectric or geothermal zero emission power plants. Without using green power sources to extract hydrogen or to charge plugin EV batteries, there will still be significant emissions coming from non green power plant sources. Background: At age 16 I built my first hydrogen fuel cell with my late Dad who had his PhD’s in organic and inorganic Chemistry and advanced material science. Compressed Hydrogen packs incredible lightweight high density energy into a compact tank that safety and highly efficiently creates electricity in the hydrogen fuel cell as fresh clean water is its only byproduct. The water goes back into the atmosphere to be once agin used to create more hydrogen. A complete 100% green sustainable energy cycle. As a new product development manufacturing engineer with decades of advanced manufacturing cost accounting, supply chain management, senior level marketing and sales experience, I firmly believe hydrogen fuel cells are the future. For example, Toyota has had good success with their CA hydrogen fuel cell cars proving to be safe, manageable and profitable. Cummins, the largest manufacturer of class 8 and other on highway Diesel engines, are also actively working on hydrogen fuel cell technologies. The challenge: The cost of building a nationwide hydrogen network is a huge financial challenge. However, following Nikola for years, they seemed to have a viable business plan of using green powered hydrogen producing service fill centers. However, Nikola is now talking about using “wasted electrical grid electricity” to power their hydrogen electrolysis systems. I am not aware of large amounts of “wasted electricity lost on the grid at certain times”, but their are times when power is less expensive per kilowatt. The Paradox: With most of the electricity on the grid powered by high sulfur “dirty coal” power plants, using the grid to extract hydrogen or plug in a semi EV, actually may produce more pollution annually than today’s ultra clean burning Diesel engines being replaced with batteries. There are always harmful emissions from ALL fossils burning power plants, some more than others. Conclusion: Nikola continues to raise more questions from Nikola’s never ending vague wavering answers to our significant growing questions. Without sustainable green zero emission end-to-end solutions that Nikola once touted as their differentiator, Tesla is likely to dominate in the electrification class 8 semi truck markets until Nikola has a nationwide true green energy ent-to-end zero emissions producing hydrogen service stations to fill their hydrogen fuel cell class 8 trucks. For Nikola stockholders, employees and the environment, I hope and pray Nikola will 100% succeeded in doing so. For now, my chips are on Tesla.

Nikola's whole business model is based on setting up monopoly selling hydrogen. Any fleet operator will look for a better option to buy hydrogen and undercut Nikola. I am not even talking about the fact that process of creating hydrogen is expensive, energy demanding and inefficient. For every unit of energy spent on generating hydrogen only 74% can be recovered by binding hydrogen and oxygen. Storing and transporting hydrogen is not trivial. And that's ignoring that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are inherently handicapped by multiple insurmountable technical problems, chief one being the difficulty of storage of hydrogen. So no product can ever be commercially viable. I wouldn't necessarily say it's a scam but you should treat it as such. Mark my words, these companies will go to zero.

also, I know Elon says a lot of things but he's called hydrogen fuel cell vehicles idiotic or something to that effect and he isn't wrong about that. It truly has insurmountable weaknesses that render it irrelevant. You either go battery electric like Tesla or run a green synthetic liquid fuel in a truck (CO2 neutral). A fuel cell can make sense with a liquid fuel because that solves all the storage and pressure handling issues but never hydrogen. @@paulriehm7638 Steve Wiegand already wrote a perfect response to your post. Still, let me tell you the difference: My Tesla stock is up 128% at the moment, and I will, in no way sell the stock in the next 5 years. With Nikola stock if I had bought it, I would be in a constant state of fear that tomorrow was maybe the day that investors will look at the fundamentals and realize that all is nothing more than wishful thinking. Putting everything is simple terms: I'm an investor not a day trader. With that said, even really bad stock can give you a return in the short run... Case in point: I bought Exxon stock at the bottom of the market in the current crisis. My stock is up 70% today. But I will sell it as soon as my profit hits 100%, because I know the company has no future. Now, the big difference regarding Nikola, is that, Nikola has no present (zero sales - revenue) and no future (hydrogen is a lot less efficient than electricity).

Tesla has lots of data, about how car drivers use their cars and how the autopilot works, true. But Nikola is not jet a car company, they concentrate on big rigs, a totally different topic than the things tesla is doing at the time. Nikola works together with BOSCH, a company, which served the car-industry since decades. BOSCH does research on autonomous cars for over 20 years, and they can help Nikola therefor with making these trucks autonomous.

Making hydrogen loses 40% of energy, storing the energy in a battery overnight for resale is more efficient. Implied in that (with the talk about getting energy so cheap “to be able to broker back to the fleets””), and something he has said explicitly before, was that the station makes it’s own hydrogen. That’s false and I would bet that, among others, the Fountain Valley, CA hydrogen station with 4 pumps servicing the public has a larger tank than they have at their headquarters to fill prototypes.

Watched this video a month after it was posted. Felt suspicious right off the bat...the BS can be sensed from his everything-is-great let’s build-the-castle-in-the-air tone and not a single mention of risks/downside.

Isn't hydrogen used for rockets? That means we will be able to fuel our spaceships? LOL

The hydrogen batteries consume hydrogen so in theory there would be less of it around to fuel spaceships.

If they plan to use those batteries in the airplane better make sure they are charged well... it’s not like you can stop in the middle of Atlantic or Pacific and call for towing from Tesla;) not to mention that any airlines are nowadays in a deep sh...t - I’m not even sure Boeing and Airbus will survive... so good luck

What if instead of buying energy and storing it on hydrogen (which is inefficient and cost money), you store that energy directly and sell it directly? If you get better energy density in your batteries the weight won't be much of a problem. Wait .... I know a company who do just that ...

Long way from 3b to 100. Without products and infrastructure already in the market, the 1B raised won't get them very far.
