I have to admit those drums sound like a million bucks, the tone is rich, full, and vibrant, the way drums should sound and of course Vinnie's playing is wondrously spectacular. The sound of these drums here is proof that no special tom mounts were ever needed, it was all in the tuning, as I suspected from the beginning. The quality of sound is a testimony to Yamaha's well made drums and shell design.

Yes. Those mounts drilled in the shell are just fine. The drums are really singing. Are these Yamaha 8000 series? They don't have the high tension lugs like the 9000.

This video proves why Zappa loved him so much!! When he changed to the electric kit, the odd time groove while ripping fills is his signature. Still unbelievable to see and hear him play!! Awesome ⭐️

Saw Vinnie at Sydney Opera House in 83 playing drums for Joni Mitchell. The band was in lockstep to the Vinnie method. It was the most incredible drum performance I have ever seen and probably ever will. He owned that stage. And I mean, this was Joni Mitchell’s gig!

The old Yamaha tour customs sound amazing - so loud and clear! Birch and Mahogany is a killer combination for a drum :-)

Had a set myself.10,12,13,14,16,22. I think they were called 'turbo tour' series at the time (early 90's). The shells were real thin making them real punchy.Yamaha has always made stellar drums. And oddly enough I recall the wood smelling great!

I had a set of white ones back in the late 80's, bought them new. I regret selling them.
He's like 26 years old or something here. Virtuoso that could keep up with Zappa on guitar! Top 3 fave drummer easy.

Interesting he is playing a Yamaha early 80`s Yamaha Tour Custom also called Yamaha 8000, that`s became to Yamaha Rock Tour Custom early 90`s with Turbo Sizes and extra power Toms and great punch sound. Its not a Yamaha Recording Custom. The same as Dave Weckl Yamaha`s 80`s Drums Clinics with a little demo of the new Electronics Drums sets. Nice
