Valley of the Kings, Egypt Explained

Why did the Egyptian pharaohs bury themselves in the Valley of the Kings? What's it like to be inside the tomb of King Tutankhamun, and why is he so important?
Today we explore the Valley of the Kings in Egypt, as well as the interior of some of the tombs where the pharaohs were buried 3300 years ago.

    The level of decoration in these tombs is incredible, especially given they must have been painted just by candlelight

    I know right? They couldn’t have used large torches as it would create a lot of smoke in already claustrophobic space without much ventilation. And smoke would have coated the walls and ceilings.. they did have lamps but I don’t think they had glass lamps that diffused the light more. Mirrors would be difficult to shine down the shafts.. perhaps if they had Manuel bravos scintillating teeth and illuminating smile could have lit up the whole of underworld.😁😏

    They did have a polished metal concave teardrop shaped back plate on an oil lamp that burned refined animal fat, very clean, almost completely smokeless. Anyway this specially crafted backing plate would reflect the light from the flame probably around 30 to 40% brighter than just a no backed flame. So this special lamp actually lit the path very well.

    How do you know they didn't have better system for lighting than we do now? Why do people think they were like idiots they built these massive structures the new how to make all kinds of art out of gold and silver and you think they used candles to paint? Why are people so dumb?

    @Said Fatah yeah I could think of a billion things as well it's just if they work or not lol. People nowadays pollute and destroy their own habitats and environment and then raise children to grow and live in the filthy created while expecting other people to pay hard-working tax dollars to raise their children likes school taxes and welfare meanwhile the people receiving that free money aren't going to do anything for the people who are losing that $!!! Humans are nothing but a vermin or a cancer upon the back of the Earth humanity is basically a melanoma! It needs Eradicated.

    “Bravo”, Manuel. We returned from a dahabiya cruise up The Nile this Monday. We used your KZread videos as research on how the various structures looked prior to departure. This latest video is so clear, succinct and carefully crafted. It also helps to have your Architectural insights. I will send a link to the other 8 passengers from our boat because, had they seen this before we sailed, they would have understood and appreciated the experience so much more. As you know, local guides are NOT allowed inside the Tombs and so much of their “spiel” is parrot fashion but your video flows so well and links Upper and Lower EGYPT and the 3 Kingdoms and various Dynasties. It was our 6th visit to EGYPT. Every time it gets better. This time, we found that tombs for Seti 1 and Nefertari were open to the public. They were expensive to visit and Nefertari was ostensibly limited to 10 mins BUT, Nefatari in particular was absolutely STUNNING! If you have not visited Manuel, pls do next time. We have some fantastic pics but you have done such a fantastic job here on the other tombs (2 of which we actually visited on Sunday), we will keep this one as our reference to show any of our family or friends who might ask about The Egyptians as it explains things so well. One thing that most people don’t realise is that the Pyramids are, what? 500kms away from Valley of The Kings, so a 2 centre visit is required. We also flew down from Aswan to Abel Simbel so I suspect you my create a video on that one day - merging the original carving out of the temple, the earthquake and the extraordinary engineering exercise of dissecting the two temples and moving the 200 ft higher up! Thank you again. We loved your representations of Pyramids, Karnak as they may have looked in all their splendour. We have also visited Rome and Petra so now we have “discovered” you, we take time out to view these vids as well. In meantime, you have another Subscriber. Grazie mille. 😉👍🥂🇬🇧 Kevin & Suzanne.

    I have a wide understanding and am here to share! In its time colours we recognise was used to us for writing as well before Marko Polo! I believe Alexander The Great from Greeks origin was not having only Horses, instead he used Sails and if I can remember sources I learnt it from fully mechanically operational. Greeks in front of that times used to be known as The Best Traders because of their knowledge of sheepmen of food product keeping it fresh! They would use flotations and Vases in water that would do it. Now thinking of it, can be different size and transport. In apparitions from others having ability and their invention Greeks was widely recognized in trade! If you see view from the top of the Pyramids (thanks to person who recorded it), Egypt has but soil was not good and as territory their people needed future in which and forever Alexander The Great is recognized. It has had of original Architecture. So, in work there was all of the world and its religions. In words you can find Serbo-Croatian of nationalities, English also mainly. Tu Tan Kha Moon, Afro Dizzy Jak, Afro Ti Da. By Quinn of Egypt, religions as Muslim and Buddhist was invited to take Christianity by Baptism in the river Neill saying not to mix, found in the words. Many statues say that animals how people would have food forever. This days no problematic at all thanks to me! Actually thanks to people left so I can developed being sorry all not in time of origin. Thanks to people like this, and other participants also! Much more I have to share including Economy.....!

  • @aephraums

    @aephraums

    it is believed that his tomb was built in haste and was probably meant for another lesser noble as it was so small. Many of the treasures inside were possibly from his mother and father's tomb as he had wanted to protect their belongings which surely would have been robbed if he left them in situ in his father's kingdom or Amana. Certain articles such as his death mask may have had the face panel recast in his likeness and originally belonged to his father.... in some ways it makes sense as his death was unexpected and to create so many articles of furniture in such a short time would have been impossible. By tradition, the successor of a Pharoah is responsible for the burial of the previously deceased, and there is a lot of info out there on that story and it does explain the rushed burial of Tut...

  • @coucoubrandy1079

    A documentary I once saw explained it that the tomb was hidden by enormous rocks that had been flushed down by the floods caused by a very heavy rainy season . This could explain why. It doesn't tell us how Carter and al knew where to start digging. There's other tombs where the paintings were destroyed by the waters that seeped through. That tomb wasn't for him as said above, and whilst many other tombs had been raided, priests and gravediggers, it could also be some Pharaohs who pinched some stuff from other ones as well. But this real mystery is that Mask ! 11kgs pure gold ! For a Pharaoh that died at 19yo and basically did nothing worthwhile, that beggars questions about, Kheops and all the others ? Egyptology will never cease to fascinate, I believe. And no, no E.T.' s involved. Sorry.

    @skepticalmaiden680 it was a coincidence, but don't forget that it was an accident that killed him. Was that mask intended for him ? There are too many doubts about it. All I know is that the General of the army became Pharaoh. Thing is, I've watched some documentary films where Akhenaten was buried. It's very confusing. Note that we don't know where Cleopatra remains are either . We like mystery? Let's consider ourselves happy then !

There's a tremendous amount to explore and your comments are super helpful , particularly in conveying a sense of how vast it is. As if you've set out to make a digital painting of the whole complex( I guess this is actually what you've done.) Yours use of language is extraordinarily accomplished,-- both artistic and accurate in detail. You choose words that make things come alive. It is very hard to achieve and I admire you for succeeding. I think the most striking thing about Egyptian art is the use of many colors. So much of what we see of ancient Egypt is just sandstone, everything is tan is color. Ancient Egypt in it's original form was full of vibrant colors, a stark opposite of much of the natural geography surrounding ancient Egypt. It must have been spectacular back in the day.

    It's great that they build a lot concealed or underground because it preserved their work so well even after 4000 years unlike other later civilizations who we have even less preserved work on even if they were bigger and more recent

    We also visited the Valley of the Kings, 4 tombs including Tutankhamun's where his mummy was. A must recommend if you're coming through Egypt.
