Valladolid, Mexico is definitely a hidden gem on the Yucatan Peninsula. In an area of Mexico where North Americans and Europeans flock for the year round weather beautiful weather and inflated prices, this little town offers so much more bang for your buck than the rest of Yucatan and Quintana Roo.
The town of Valladolid itself is cute and quaint. There is not a ton going on, definitely no nightlife nor water access. However, the town does have a few gyms, it has cheap and delicious food (like most towns in Mexico), it has a cenote right in town that is easily accessible and only costs $4 US.
Of course, the highlight is the fact that one of the 7 Wonders of the Modern World, Chichen Itza, is a 30 minute drive. Oddly enough, I met many backpackers who came to Valladolid and did not go to this archaeological wonder. Instead prefering to use Valladolid as a base to get away from the crowds and prices of Tulum, Holbox, and Playa del Carmen.
Honestly, this is not the worst idea ever as Valladolid is 10X better and more charming than its neighbor two hours to the west, Merida, but more on that in another video.
