CLIP DESCRIPTION:
When Major Remer (Thomas Kretschmann) comes to arrest Goebbels (Harvey Friedman), a phone call from Hitler turns the tide.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
At the absolute height of World War II, German generals hatch a daring plan to assassinate Adolf Hitler and effectively render the German war machine impotent. Directed by Bryan Singer, Valkyrie stars Tom Cruise as Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg, the real-life mastermind behind the elaborate plot known as Project Valkyrie: a plan to assassinate Hitler and overthrow his government from the inside. Stauffenberg has been a loyal soldier and an asset to the Reich for his entire military career, but after losing an eye, a hand, and three fingers in an Allied bombing, he reaches a breaking point. The destructive madness that his country is unleashing on the world has become too terrible for the colonel to stand silent. He joins the resistance movement -- a treasonous act, punishable by death -- and risks his life and the life of his family for the chance to change history. Comprised of high-ranking officials working in secret, the German Resistance has access to the inner workings of the government and military, putting them in the perfect position to dispatch the dictator and then use his own official contingency plan to seize power -

    @HydraliskKriegsMarine Yea I don't think it'd be that simple and easy. You really think all those armies marching into Europe would just leave Germany alone? Hitler or no Hitler Germany had a lot of shitstorm in store for them, it was Hitler's suicide and the rift between the two worlds that helped lessen the blow. God knows what would have happened if they had killed Hitler. It's something very difficult to comprehend.

And in 1944 Hitler was already a maniac, his orders were irrational, germany had lost most of main land europe and the allies attacked on several sides, the war was lost. I love how purely professional the Major is here. He straightens out his uniform before going into the office, but seems to remind himself not to knock since he's there to make an arrest, delivers his message concisely, answers Goebell's question briefly but politely, and once he's given his new orders he doesn't actually apologise or show any embarrassment because there's no need; he's just following orders.

    Okay, so here's how things really happened: Reimer entered the room with his adjutant, and Goebbels reminded them of their oath to Hitler. When Reimer claimed that Hitler was dead, Goebbels claimed he could prove otherwise and picked up the phone. After dialing the right number, he gave it to Reimer, and the exchange started the way it did in the film, but Hitler gave specific orders on whom to listen to, and ended the call by promoting Reimer to the rank of colonel.

    After the conspirators were executed by order of General Fromm, the subtitle correctly states that Fromm himself was executed on 12 March 1945. However, because at trial he was not directly connected to the conspiracy, he was instead convicted of 'cowardice before the enemy'. For this conviction he was executed by military firing squad. Interestingly, at his death Fromm was technically a civilian, having been discharged from the Army on 14 September 1944.

  • @satan899

    @satan899

    It’s kind of amazing that Fromm was not able to escape whatever house arrest he was under and be able to enter territory controlled by the allies. By March 1945 Germany was collapsing and both fronts have entered Germany. Even if there were guards at fromms house, by that time I would think the guards would have been off doing more important things. Fromm ALMOST made it. He was a civilian so he wouldn’t have been tried during Nuremberg (even if the Alies found out who he was, the former reserve army general wasn’t going to be brought up on any charges). I guess in this case, karma really did get him. Even if he wasn’t participating in the plot, he was absolutely just as guilty by completely enabling them to carry out whatever they were planning

    The general in charge who knew about the plot panicked and began executing everyone involved despite Hitler's orders to keep them alive. Even Major Fegelein couldn't stop the general in his attempt to erase the witnesses. It took a big, tough SS Colonel by the name of Otto Skorzeny to arrive on the scene and stop the executions by shear brute force of his personality. But not before the main conspiracy was already shot (lucky for him actually as the survivors were tortured). The general who tried to cover his tracks was executed as well after his trial.

    The way this event is shown in this scene is not entirely historically accurate, despite being generally perceived to be like that. In reality, Remmer was ordered to go and arrest Goebbels and other leaders of the SS, but he wasn't sure what was going on and had doubts about the orders he was given, fearing that he might be helping the rebels if he does it. He then phoned Goebbels himself to find out and Goebbels invited him and his soldiers to come to his office to discuss it. After Remmer arrived, the rest of this scene is historically accurate, starting with moment Remmer asked for proof that Hitler was alive and Goebbels putting him through on phone.

    Hitler didn’t talk in such a quiet tone and so menacing slowly, during the phone call, he spoke loud and fast and was fuming.

    Yeah though James Bond is usually played by British actors. Still can't imagine a German actor playing a British spy though.. Or maybe Thomas kretschmann could also play the main villain in an Expendables, fast and furious or kingsman movie
