Vacay Mode | Taking Amtrak - Cycling Pitt & DC

Ойын-сауық

This year we decided to take the Amtrak Capitol Limited as part of our Bike Tour. We drove to Pittsburgh and hit some breweries, spent the night in an air bnb then took the train in the morning. We pent the next afternoon and evening cycling around Washington DC and spent the night in another Air BnB before hitting the C&O Trail in the morning. The next video will be our 5 days of riding the C&O Trial and the GAP Trail from Georgetown to Pittsburgh.

    Good stuff! We need more bikes & trains. Cyclists need to encourage Amtrak to become more bike friendly. Of course, would be great if we (USA) would invest in more rail and bike infrastructure. Thankfully, I live in Philly and take advantage of public transportation with my bike to get to trails such as the D&L trail, and Schuylkill River Trail. I plan to take Amtrak to Pittsburgh sometime soon and do the GAP/C&O. Have a great ride, and looking forward to your future videos!

  • @TimFitzwater

    @TimFitzwater

    Thanks! I have another friend in Philly who has mentioned similar things. I think, from what I've read, that Amtrak is all about the cycling connections. They are the most financially stable they have ever been - but it still takes investment from congress to get them to the next level. They even say that in their videos - have congress enforce the laws already on the books and the trains will run faster. They really are at the mercy of freight trains right now.

  • @winterwatson6811

    @winterwatson6811

    Жыл бұрын

    as someone familiar with the amtrak experience, i assumed the law was that freight trains get the right of way because it’s what always happens. i was pretty furious when i found that amtrak actually has right of way, it’s just the freight railroads don’t care. the domestic freight oligopoly disregards law to the detriment of us all

  • @TimFitzwater

    Super frustrating. Amtrak has posted the last few years about it basically saying if it pisses you off call your congressman. Though really the executive branch could do something today if they wanted to.

  • @TimFitzwater

    @TimFitzwater

    Жыл бұрын

    Yeah - that is why we built it into the plan. Amtrak themselves has a video out explaining their delay problem which in essence says "don't like delays - call congress". With some more upfront infrastructure investment I truly believe Amtrak could not only be on time but profitable(before the pandemic hit it had almost reached the break even point for operations for the first time ever). Not that it should have to be extremely profitable to be worthwhile - the freeways don't exactly pay for themselves.

    You mention not having to take your front racks off your bikes for AMTRAK. Do you know if DC to Pittsburgh and/or Pittsburgh to DC on AMTRAK is always baggage car rather than in car racks? Either way, have you ever mounted your bike on one of the AMTRAK racks? Do low mounted front racks have to come off in order to attach a bike to the AMTRAK racks? Thanks for any answers you may have! Soon to ride Pittsburgh to DC!

  • @TimFitzwater

    Both times I've taken this train it was a baggage car. The first time we hooked out bikes on the racks ourselves and it would have been fine with racks on the bike. Second time they took the bikes and lied them down in the car.

  • @TimFitzwater

    Glad you liked it! Pittsburg has long term parking at the transit center right across the street from the station. We always stay in Air BnB's - then we can stay in neighborhoods or near breweries/the trails we want to go to. Also - try to find first floor places that we can git out bikes in. Heading to the station in Pitt Erin drove the car and the rest of us just rode there.

    Thanks you! There is a city owned deck right across the street from the Amtrak(Union Station). We had no trouble there - just need to let the attendant know it is for long term parking. I was just having a conversation yesterday with a friend who told me that if you tell them it is for cycling it would be free - the tourism department reimburses the city or something. I haven't looked into it but it would definitely be worth a call!

    Genuine question, I’m not trolling. Does so much drinking ever affect your ability to operate the bike safely? If drinking and driving is bad, wouldn’t drinking and cycling be bad? I have never had a beer in my life, so I know nothing about the physical effects…

  • @TimFitzwater

    Yes - definitely. Have to drink plenty of water and eat food and make sure you know your limits. I'd say the big difference with driving is that you are way more likely to hurt other people - overdo it on your bike and you are putting mostly yourself at risk.
