V8 Muscle in an Armani Suit: Why the De Tomaso Pantera is an underrated '70s and '80s Icon
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
I finally got to drive and shoot a car that I've been wanting to drive for a very long time. This is Jim Demick's 1971 De Tomaso Pantera, which is powered by a 600 horsepower V8 based on the original engine that came in the car.
Keep an eye for the more in depth video I'm working on that covers Jim's story with his Pantera, which he has owned for 28 years and has continually improved over the years.

It might be the best looking car of all time.
I've got a '72 that looks very similar. The narrow bodied original cars are so much sleeker and better looking. Gorgeous!

I completely agree!! I am no fan of the knockoff Lambo Panteras but these ones are beyond sexy.

I prefer GT5 and Si, the OG one is still beautiful tho
Always loved the Pantera...it's sleek styling, a raw machine and it's unique history.
In every conceivable way, that is a true "man's" vehicle!

Actually, the Ford V-8 was originally the 302, then the 351 Cleveland motor. This car handled and drove really well. The mid-engine added a great stability to the ride and handling.
My favourite all time vehicle. I’d give almost anything for one!
Such a nice early Pantera , fully sorted for most part. Nice that it can do 0-60 in about 3 seconds. Plus less body roll and coil overs . If anything could use race brakes. Other than that a solid nice Pantera. Thanks for sharing 👍
I'm usually not a fan of Restomods, but this narrow bodied Pantera is beautiful. I'm envious.
Sharp one odf my favorites for sure. Like the small bumper
my dream car growing up . was about 12 years old visiting friends down in California . i was at a park and a beautiful one rolled up .. i was in love .. wow .. this one with the mods just seems so awsome .. how the pantera should be imo .. 600 hp . weee
That sound…. O. M. G.
This is the guy you want to talk to the one by Ventura. He was on Jay Leno’s garage. Very nice man. Very educated in this car speaks very nice. He actually talks to you. He doesn’t talk about you and very nice educated man on this car knows everything join the club.
Gorgeous film of a truly rare masterpiece

yes awsome production video . loved it .. sound ect.
Still my favorite... and I´m 62 :)
Tastefully updated Pantera!!!! Looks basically stock, even though the engine and suspension have been upgraded significantly. Personally, I’d have put a Coyote engine in it. It would then have an engine as exotic as the car looks.
this has been my dream car for many many years...
Amazing car! Thanks for the great video and review.
Great shots of the car on the road.
Love that He kept the Ansa Muffles..those make that car sound so well
Timeless and gorgeous design. This car is an eye-catcher in any arena.
This one is a beauty! 351C is a great engine especially when you wake it up!
I had a chance to go on a drive with a number of Pantera owners several months back, and Jim and his amazing car were there as one of the participants. My red early '72 has had many of the same type of modifications done and for the first time in over 25 years of ownership is fully sorted, drivable on a regualr basis, reliable and luxuriously comfortble. I now drive it every weekend. and finally enjoy it. Still contemporary looking (I would say better looking than the vast majority of new supercars), and with the kind of horsepower that Jim's and my car have now, there's plenty of scoot too. The sound, however, is the most impressive part.

Beautiful. My Birth year with modern mods. Gimme.
Sweet ride
A much simpler, cleaner, efficient, trimmer vehicle that sticks to what a car like this should be. Love the fact that it has a big Ford OHV V-8. Tons of useable power. Easy to hop up and maintain.
She's a beaut. And sounds wonderful too.
I want one
Always loved the Pantera. Still do. One negative about this build is the placement of the intake scoop. Rear facing in a cavern? That's a negative pressure zone unless there are some hidden body mods. If not, that intake position is starving the engine. Wonder how much horsepower it's losing. Relocate the air intake .
So underrated that the most are not able to buy this beauty.
I LIKE IT !
8:15 ...lovely appearance.

Thanks! The camera car I used on this one was an '06 Porsche Cayman S. Great camera car since it has tons of bumper area that can hold suction cup mounted cameras and it's fast enough to keep up.

Nice! I definitely see the Porsche doing this. Good choice. Thanks for replying! This Pantera though is just extraordinary.
It's not in the video, but I assume it's also got aftermarket cooling system... radiator, fans, etc. Also, curious if he's got the AC hooked up too. Notice the green button on the console, that's an aftermarket push button start, which I've always thought was weird with a manual. Gorgeous car though.

Yes, it has a fully upgraded cooling system, runs very cool. The owner had just installed a fully updated AC system that wasn't quite operational on the day I drove it. Yes that's a push button start that's been on the car for years.
Fabuleuse voiture ❤😉🇨🇵
Who is the engine builder in New Mexico?
LOVE these early cars but LUST after the factory widebody cars. It's personal preference.
Price?
I love the hype on our cars, but there is no 600hp being made from a factory Ansa exhaust. Great videography though :)
@PanteraJim
2 жыл бұрын
You fell for some more hype :) .....I love the ANSA decals so I stuck some on the 2-1/2" Mind-Train exhaust (nothing more than twin 10" long glass packs) which has basically been gutted. It's more of a straight through exhaust system than anything else. The original ANSA exhaust is 1-3/4" through very restrictive mufflers.
So how do these cars handle? Does anybody know?

Good advice, being in shape is certainly important. But I think you missed the point of my comment. The heavy steering at low speeds impedes the car's nimbleness and ability to change direction quickly. That detracts from the fun factor at low speeds. Thanks for commenting and watching!
Modernized is what it's called. The rims and tires are the only thing that are visually changed. I just can't get into the Snoop Dawg Donk look.
I owned a ‘71 and new ‘72, and this man really doesn’t know what he is talking about. I can’t believe he painted the chrome bumpers black. You should leave totally original. Also he chrome plated the wheels.
It's so brutal and beautiful. Elegance is overrated - hurrah for brute force.
This is nothing like an original Pantera. Wheels and suspension are aftermarket, hood grills added, seats aftermarket, etc. Etc. The 71 had all kinds of reliability problems, so bad Elvis shot his.
@slyane7320

The problem the original Panteras had was the cooling...the Cleveland was a strong, reliable motor, the ZF transaxel was strong, just the cooling system was just not up to cooling a rear-engine American V8.
@gmoroder

Is that a bad thing? Why should the car stay all-original and unreliable, when you can modify the car to turn it into something great?
@tedgeldberg6498
2 жыл бұрын
@@gmoroder The original panteras went from design to showrooms in something like 9 months. It's no wonder they had unresolved issues. But the Ford and the strong Pantera community have worked out these issues years ago, and I drive mine more now than at any time in my 21 year ownership.
i think its the best looking car in the world ever !!!!!!! . Yeh the Ferrari BB 512 Boxer is more beautiful ......... but that car with the V* american engine is the best . New supercars are .............. thumbs down
Would look SO MUCH BETTER with the original size rims and tires. The oversized clown shoe rims and low profile rubber band tires ruin the look. I think its brilliant when fad fanboys have custom made rims that look just like the originals but they oversize them. GENIUS.
The word underrated is overrated.
De Tomaso is still a desigen firm
