V8 Floor Shifted Galaxie wagon returns! Can the engine be saved after 30 years in a junkyard!

After a long wait we are finally back with the 64 Ford Galaxie Country Sedan 289 V8 floor shifted manual station wagon. We rescued this car from a local junkyard where it had been sitting for 30 years with the windows down and all the spark plugs out of the engine. Because of the plugs being out the cylinder bores really got rusted up and we were unable to get the engine unstuck until we took the heads off and filled the cylinders with muriatic acid to eat out the rust. Although we were able to free up the engine one of the cylinders was pitted so bad that we are going to have to rebuild this 289 so in this video we are going to get the engine out, tear it down, and try to figure out if it is rebuildable or not. We also try out using the old 2N Ford tractor we saved from the same location to see if it can work as a wrecker.

Heres a little safety tip for you. Many people have been killed towing things with tractors. There is a very simple solution, run the cable under the tractor and hook it to the front. This way it pulls the front of the tractor down , eliminating the possibility of it flipping up. running another chain loop, loosely and not too high, around the cable at the rear, will keep it centered and stop it getting caught up in the wheels

My first car a 64 ford falcon wagon.. my older brother left the hood off, spark plugs out, and over the Ohio winter months later, it was locked tight. But I took on the challenge with no experience what so ever at 16 years old.. I tore it down . A sledge hammer and a 2x4 to get the pistons moving.. put it all back together and drove it in the fields. That’s where I learned to drive.

Sure enough, another family auto shop! I wish my own Dad had more participation through the years. I bought a 1956 T-Bird in 1960, and while a good solid car, it served to ignite the spark of gearhead in me. Looks like you need an FE transplant! Our son had a tired 1966 or 67 Galaxy wagon which was pretty tired, and we gave it a heart transplant with a 390. C6 trans, and whatever the stock axle ratio was, but it was a 9". This became known as "The draggin' wagon." That was around 1974. Yours is also a 9" which is pretty much as good as it gets! The tranny will probably be OK if it is in generally good shape. If not, Ford 10 bolt four speeds are still fairly plentiful.

As usual, another great show, I hope the old block can be saved. I think a 4 speed transmission would be better. I also love the kitten, reminds me of my late wife, she saved every stray cat she could get. I vote the cats name should be Bogie, after my wife's favorite old time actor.

It is great you let the kids do things on the channel - not just be visible, but actually work on stuff, tap threads, weld, pull apart the engine etc! And Tosh is pure gold helping do everything and anything 👍. I am voting for rebuilding the engine, it is an actual period correct engine, with the heads being the newest and even that a year newer than the car, Also note the actual build date back when that car was built was the date the power train is added to the chassis or the year the chassis and power train was mated to the body, I can't remember which one. These days it is different, with build dates, compliance dates and model year dates. Usually any two of these last three dates are the same, and one could be the following year.

Like the Galaxie Wagon. If you can buy a good runnning engine For the price of what it takes to bore, sleeve, polish the crankshaft, cam lifters, bearings, piston rings, etc, it would be worth it. You are looking at around $1,000-$1200 to rebuild the engine, plus clutch kit, starter, to get the power plant good. I bet you got it all figured out. Great video, with a great family as always. God Bless You All.

Ok. I have to make a second comment. The 289/302 is a great engine. You can build great power on it. My opinion? Rebuild it. This is something that Ralphy can learn on. If you buy a new engine, you are going to spend around $1500.00. That has been my experience. If you buy a used motor from the junkyard you might be spending around $500, but you would be buying someone else's problems. You have an original 289. to me that's priceless. So sleep it hone it and rebuild it that's just me love yourself love the fact that Ralphie is a part of that. I can't wait to see the outcome look forward to seeing the next video.

The 289 in the big galaxie is way underpowered with your whole family in it. I know as I have a 63 galaxie with a 289. Upgrade to a 352 or 390. It would haul your whole family and a trailer easily.

You have seen the photos of my 1991 Crown Victoria wagon. This car has the 302 V8 that I had rebuilt along with the 4 speed overdrive transmission two years ago. The rebuilder put in flat top pistons to increase the horsepower. It has about 10,000.0 miles since the rebuild and runs like a watch. This is the wagon that I tow my boat with as I have air shocks on the rear to take the weight of the boat. I would suggest that you put in a more modern 302 V8 with fuel injection and make this car into a daily driver and kid hauler. Great car and worth saving.

I didn't even know you had the 64 Galaxie wagon!! One of these days if I live long enough I am going to have one. My dad bought a new one in 1963. He had it narrowed down to a black one and a maroon one and couldn't make up his mind. He bent over and ask me which one I liked the best and I pointed to the black one and that was the one he bought. I picked out my 1st new car when I was almost 3.

Hey I don't like to spend nobody's money but $500 ain't bad to get it done but if you go to the junkyard and find a motor you really don't know what's wrong with it so weigh your options before you do anything think about it but it still was a good video and had good contents and I'm waiting to see what you going to do next bro

Like the Sleeper team. 👍 . . . Back in ‘66, our family had a ‘63 Galaxie wagon (red, inside and out). One time, my mom met a pickup in a narrow one-lane railroad underpass. She made it through, no scratches, but there was NO room to spare, none zero nada. Us kids were super impressed with her driving abilities that we never knew she had.

Josh you are right about the wheels, matching Littles on the front would be perfect, in fact, a tubbed out wagon would be even better but what you have fits and looks good 👍

I agree PB Blaster should be a sponsor of your channel not to mention O'reily's and Cooker Tires and maybe even Die Hard batteries. I had squirrels store nuts in my Airbox filter in my truck don't know how they got into that either. That Ford 2N tractor is pretty good never saw one lift a car before. My father in law used to work on the assembly line and he told me if they ran out of parts for a model year car that was close to being finished they would have used newer parts they had on hand. Great video great to see the whole family and even some animals involved.(Keep the original block and sleeve that bad one)

Save all the station wagons that is the best five words ever!!! If you don’t save that original engine and rebuild it I would at least work on putting a period correct 390 in her and then you would be able to get you a nice vintage camp trailer and tow it next year on a vacation 🙌🙌 oh and yes get a pair of matching front hoops for it the rear looks so awesome!
