Víkingur Ólafsson - Rameau: Les tendres plaintes

Музыка

“For me, Rameau is up there with Handel, Scarlatti, and second only to Bach,” says Ólafsson. “It is simply genius keyboard writing.” His new album ‘Debussy Rameau’ juxtaposes Rameau’s music with that of Debussy, describing it as a “dialogue” between the two composers. He said that together they “defeat time and space with music”. What follows Debussy’s tender apologies on the album are Rameau’s tender complaints in ‘Les Tendres Plaintes’ from his Suite in D. In fact, tenderness was also the word evoked by Debussy to describe what he admired so deeply in Rameau - “Delicate and charming tenderness”, to be exact. Watch Víkingur Ólafsson performing Jean-Philippe Rameau’s ‘Les tendres plaintes’.
“Ólafsson’s interpretations inhabit a unique, distinct and extraordinary world all their own.” - Gramophone

So beautiful a performance. I still do not know why Rameau is not as widely known as just about every other classical composer.

He indiscriminately omits most of the ornaments which is in the scores of both Barenreiter and Camille Saint-Saens’ edition. I’m curious as to why? Ornamentation was the foundation of Baroque music, especially with the French.

He's also not playing on a harpsichord. Likely he toned down the agrements because they don't sound as effective on a modern piano.

Jim P i play a lot of French Baroque on the piano and with the written ornamentation, so it can be done effectively, if I may say so myself. The one thing that must be done when playing Baroque ornamentation, esp with the French, is that you have to slow down the piece somewhat.

I would enjoy the music if that piano were suitable for this rondeau by Rameau. At least, should you perform a piano version of Les tendres plaintes, pick up an instrument that serves its style. I stopped listening, half way … Didn’t like the voicing, nor did I stand the sound recording. Too bad for the pianist.

Why all this fuss? Olafsson is technically good (like so many others) but seems to have no musical direction and not much music. Rameau transcriptions like this convey nothing of the genius of the composer because they snatch chunks out of context.

MG, bad is far too strong a word, as this performance is very elegant and enjoyable, but needs to be heard to understand why the Sokolov version is classed as best in the world, almost out of this world even.
