Víkingur Ólafsson - Rameau: Les tendres plaintes
“For me, Rameau is up there with Handel, Scarlatti, and second only to Bach,” says Ólafsson. “It is simply genius keyboard writing.” His new album ‘Debussy Rameau’ juxtaposes Rameau’s music with that of Debussy, describing it as a “dialogue” between the two composers. He said that together they “defeat time and space with music”. What follows Debussy’s tender apologies on the album are Rameau’s tender complaints in ‘Les Tendres Plaintes’ from his Suite in D. In fact, tenderness was also the word evoked by Debussy to describe what he admired so deeply in Rameau - “Delicate and charming tenderness”, to be exact. Watch Víkingur Ólafsson performing Jean-Philippe Rameau’s ‘Les tendres plaintes’.
“Ólafsson’s interpretations inhabit a unique, distinct and extraordinary world all their own.” - Gramophone

I have all the Vikingur records and listen to it everyday before sleeping. Best regards from Poland Marcel (7 years old)
So beautiful a performance. I still do not know why Rameau is not as widely known as just about every other classical composer.
Superb, sensitive, loving playing. I have been under the spell of Rameau since I first heard his music over 60 years ago. Tenderness, strength, passion, elegance, insight!
With pure class, creativity and uniqueness, Ólafsson represents the biggest star pianist in my heart.
A pure sound, a pure picture, a pure composition, the notes are floating in the air like butterflies in paradise. Bravo to the film crew and thank you Mr. Olafsson and Deutsche Grammofon for such a magic moment...
His play always soothes my soul.. I'm grateful for that. 🌷
Víkingur Ólafsson 's performances are just amazing. Asymptotic perfection I would say!
So beautiful !!! ❤❤❤
Just feel like puryfying my soul. Thanks a lot for video.
Listening to this album inspired me to learn this song on piano and it has been a joy to learn and play. Vikingur is a truly inspired pianist, much love from Las Vegas.

Congratulations 🎉 What’s the difficulty level of this piece? This is one of my dream pieces that I’d like to learn as well.
Just perfection! What a genius Vikingur is. A lovely reminder of the brilliance of Rameau, too.

What a nasty thing to say! I don't think many agree with you.
Thank you DG,thank you 冰岛老公! I received the CDs this afternoon!( I gave the postman a very serious thank!) I am so grateful for this special gift during the Pandemic! I think it will give people a lot of comfort during this hardship!
Beautiful rendition of one of my favorite classical pieces.
Debussy admired Rameau's “delicate and charming tenderness” in his music. What do you like the most about Rameau?

I used to hate Rameau a lot and got dizzy in music theory, but now I totally fall in love with this French. Hope there would be more Rameaus operas shown.

The fact the music is timeless; meaning it is useful to hear in any situations or turmoil.
sound and visual of this video took to me a beautiful journey. especially what is going on in the world, we all worry, depress, sadden all those negative feelings. at least this video made me forget all that for 2:41. thank you xoxo from Sydney Australia
I enjoy these imaginative videos. No idea how the business model works to pay for them given the CPM, but that just makes me admire the initiative all the more 👌

Þakka þér kærlega! Thank you very much, Vikingfur! This is just magical! Rahmet!
GOD BLESS YOU!!!
Magical video, virtuoso artist on the piano. Loving the new album! Favorite piano player 🎹🎼
Exquisite!
It's great! Thanks for the performance 👏👏👏🙏
Superb! Divinely interpretation of multiple emotions tender sweet sad sentiment of musical statements! Tranquil!❤️👍🌹👌
Amazing performance .. Great 💐

Actually, he ornaments a lot, but very tastefully
Elegant and profound.

for me these are the best interpretations out there. this simply sounds supreme.
so beautiful
Love you 🙏🏼❤️
His sound is art!
Luz y minimalismo. Aguante
So Deutsche Grammophon does not launch only musical clowns such as Mr L.L., but also true, sensitive, articulate musicians. Good to know, and thank you.
I am glad to have found this even song. There are many interpretations which do not have a singing flow.
Those blue glasses are so perfect with that suit
Divin!!!!!
Nice choice in glasses! I too wear Moscot Miltzen frames.
Elegància i bon gust.
👏👏🎹
Came here because of your ad. It was nice to hear some classic music after bombarded with pop music.

Messiaen learnt a lot from Rameau.. He surely used his “birds light motif” in his music as well.
I don't know how he can play with the floor spinning around like that.
Shameless edit at 0:41...
He indiscriminately omits most of the ornaments which is in the scores of both Barenreiter and Camille Saint-Saens’ edition. I’m curious as to why? Ornamentation was the foundation of Baroque music, especially with the French.

He's also not playing on a harpsichord. Likely he toned down the agrements because they don't sound as effective on a modern piano.

Jim P i play a lot of French Baroque on the piano and with the written ornamentation, so it can be done effectively, if I may say so myself. The one thing that must be done when playing Baroque ornamentation, esp with the French, is that you have to slow down the piece somewhat.
Tous Les deux don't sublimes...
I consider Ólafssons "interpretation" is superior.. consistent and flowing, better than Sokolov actually!

Beaucoup trop rapide…
good playing, but this video is too obviously a copy of Glenn Gould playing the Webern variations...
I would enjoy the music if that piano were suitable for this rondeau by Rameau. At least, should you perform a piano version of Les tendres plaintes, pick up an instrument that serves its style. I stopped listening, half way … Didn’t like the voicing, nor did I stand the sound recording. Too bad for the pianist.
Why all this fuss? Olafsson is technically good (like so many others) but seems to have no musical direction and not much music. Rameau transcriptions like this convey nothing of the genius of the composer because they snatch chunks out of context.
compared to Sokolov's interpretation it's quite poor in termes of ornamentarion and complexity. I don't enjoy it that much.

MG, bad is far too strong a word, as this performance is very elegant and enjoyable, but needs to be heard to understand why the Sokolov version is classed as best in the world, almost out of this world even.
