Uyghurs in Guangzhou | Muslim Community in China
Have you ever tried baking Uyghur naan bread?
Islam in Guangzhou arrived through trading in 7th century. Today, there are still large number of muslims living and doing business around the region.
In this episode, we are introducing a community other than Little Africa in Guangzhou - a Muslim community!
Hiro and Daum encountered people from different parts of Arabic countries in Xiaobei (Guangzhou). We've tried Lamb Mandi at a halal restaurant, and also a visited a Uyghur bakery - where they bake Uyghur naans straight from their tandoor. Daum was lucky to learn how to stick naan inside the tandoor from the Uyghurs... but could she do it?

I hope you reply to those speculations in the comments section that Uyghurs are followed by government agents to not say a thing about their situation. Tell them if you see sadness in those faces. Tell them if you see agents around them. Tell them if you see Muslims being oppressed. Tell them if you see religions being oppressed. So sick of people outside China thinking they know better just because one pathological liar named Adrian Zenz told them about the situation he imagined in Xinjiang.

Yes, such as the Hui ethnic community with whom we have all become so accustomed to since childhood, who are virtually indistinguishable from us (Cantonese) Han people and who can even do authentic Cantonese cuisine the Halal way. Or, the Koreans who have "colonised" several streets in Baiyun District, walking along which I can virtually feel the breeze from Northeast Asia brushing my face, carrying with it that iconic scent ....

Islam, , in its imported and localised forms, has always been one of our cherished blossoms in this millennia-old yet lively garden that is Guangzhou! May I ask when the scenes were filmed? I live in Guangzhou and visited Xiaobei just a month ago, sadly to find that most foreigners that used to live in Xiaobei have left China since early this year and cannot come back because border is closed. Therefore, streets in Xiaobei are empty, most shops and restaurants that you mentioned in this video and others are closed now. Honestly I'm not quite sure if Little Africa and Muslim community in Guangzhou will be back to its previous scale after the pandemic.

We are very sorry to hear this update. This video was filmed in the summer of 2018, and we had so much fun in the town. We've been aware of the issues that's been happening around this region in the recent year. When the pandemic ends, we would like to go back and film what Xiaobei is like now...
