Subscribe to my channel: bit.ly/2NBKaOe
Are you a Positivist or an Interpretivist user researcher?
Do you believe that… (choose one statement in each pair).
1. The world is external and objective OR The world is socially constructed and subjective.
2. The user researcher is independent OR The user researcher is a party to what is being observed.
3. User research is value-free OR User research is driven by business interests.
Do you believe that user researchers should… (choose one statement in each pair).
4. Focus on facts OR Focus on meanings.
5. Locate causality between variables OR Try to understand what is happening.
6. Formulate and test hypotheses OR Construct theories and models from the data.
Which of these statements is closest to your research preference? (choose one statement in each pair).
7. I prefer to operationalise concepts (like usability) so that they can be measured OR I prefer to use multiple methods to establish different views of a phenomenon.
8. I prefer to use large samples from which to generalise to the population OR I prefer to use small samples researched in depth or over time.
9. I prefer quantitative methods OR I prefer qualitative methods.
Interpreting your answers
- If you mainly chose the statements on the left-hand side, you tend towards Positivism.
- If you mainly chose the statements on the right-hand side, you tend towards Interpretivism.
- If you have a relatively even mix, you’re a Postpositivist.
(I created this quiz by adapting Table 2.1 in David E. Gray, "Doing Research in the Real World", SAGE Publications ltd, 2004).

Positivism is the main paradigm in business. It's what people equate with "science". Even economic science is an attempt to use mathematical models from physics to model human behaviour. But because we are working with humans, you cannot ignore the constructivist viewpoint as humans construct their world and physical identical contexts can be psychologically different. So, as a researcher, I am looking for ways to teach constructivist thinking amongst clients, but you need both to be succesful.

Thanks James. It's not something that UX researchers often think about but it's important as it drives your decision on what research methods to use.

As i become more epistemologically aware, and according to Crotty's (1998) knowledge framework, I like to think i am a mix, weighted more towards an interpretevist philosophical approach, looking for meaning and understanding more from a contextual standpoint. Nevertheless, from a reflective autonomous UX researcher practictioner position, i equally enjoy rational problem solving. Good question. I think becoming aware of how you acrue knowledge especially helps to look more objectively at biases and therefore improved management around the planning and carrying out of research methods. I'd be interested to know where you sit on the epistemological spectrum David?

I'm glad you found it useful. My own results have changed over time. 20 years ago, my user research leant much more towards the positivist side. Nowadays I'm more interpretivist in outlook and that's reflected in the way I do research.
