    "You made it. I see you. There are everyday human experiences that give weight and substance to the certificate you're about to receive. Every sacrifice, every bit of energy you drag out of you every morning even if all you managed to do was scratch the bare minimum, you're here today." Congratulation Lisa Kamal. Be proud to be Malaysian...

    1:43 >> Lisa Kamal: Thank you, Provost Scholz, for that kind introduction. Thank you, Chancellor 1:49 Blank, senior class officers for this incredible honor. 2:00 [Singing] Raise a glass to freedom, 2:04 raise a glass to all of us, telling the story of today. 2:13 [ Applause ] 2:20 In my junior year of college, Listening to the "Hamilton" sound track became my coping 2:26 mechanism that would get me through the day. In case you don't know the musical written 2:33 by Lin-Manuel Miranda, it tells the story of an orphan and immigrant who became one 2:39 of the Founding Fathers of America. After listening to the album, I dove into the fandom, 2:47 memorized all of the songs while walking to class, and waiting for the bus, and before 2:52 I went to sleep. I came here on a scholarship, a long way from my home in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. 3:02 This opportunity to be here, at the prestigious University of Wisconsin-Madison, did not come 3:09 easy or cost little, for any of us. My hopeful freshman self had started out college with 3:17 big dreams. I wanted to make the most of my time here because just like Hamilton, there's 3:24 a million things I haven't done. In the beginning, the unknown was exciting. Remember those days? 3:33 I could justify struggling in Calculus, or chemistry, because, I was only a freshman. 3:40 And I thought, by the time I am a senior, I'll be a pro at everything. But as students, 3:50 we juggle a lot on our plates. We juggle our studies, relationships with friends and family, 3:59 and in my case, most of them were abroad, separated by a 14-hour time difference. Most 4:08 importantly, we work towards the promise of a great future for ourselves. While I was 4:15 carrying the expectations of many, the heaviest ones were my own. When I didn't meet them, 4:23 the person I disappointed the most was myself. My second year in college, I suffered burnout 4:31 to the point of losing motivation to finish this degree. I'd overwhelmed myself past my 4:37 breaking point. I kept chasing things that would look good on my resume, but I stopped 4:42 feeling passion for anything I did or learned. And the truth was, all I wanted to do was 4:50 sleep all the time. I was so desperate to find the spark of enthusiasm, the same one 4:58 we all overflowed with at the beginning, only to feel so helpless. But friends, look at 5:10 where you are, look at where you started. You made it here to the last act. You did 5:19 it day after day. You made the choice to rise up and give yourself another chance to start 5:27 over every single morning. And for me, I sang like my life was a Tony Award-winning Broadway 5:34 musical. And believe me, you did not throw away your shot. Because, if you graduated 5:45 having completed most of your course work, from the comfort of your own bed staring into 5:51 your laptop, you made it. I see you. If you graduated having spent all hours of the day 5:59 in the library or evenings in coffee shops, you made it. I see you. Or, if you are anywhere 6:09 in between, you made it. I see you. There's everyday human experiences that give weight 6:18 and substance to the certificate you are about to receive. Every sacrifice, every bit of 6:25 energy that you dragged out of you every morning, even if all you managed to do was scratch 6:32 the bare minimum, you are here today, you are graduating today, and I am proud of you. 6:40 I am immensely proud of you! Now at the end, I look back and keep thanking God, teachers, 6:50 and mentors, mental health counselors at the University Health Services. My family and 6:57 friend who helped carry me through till today. I thank Lin-Manuel Miranda for writing his 7:03 songs, and helping me finish my Nina story, and for reimagining diverse representations 7:11 on the Broadway stage. Madison, I'll miss your winters, your sunsets, your super frozen 7:22 lakes. But I look forward to the future that the University of Wisconsin has prepared me for. 7:28 I love this school with all my heart. My fellow graduates, as you proudly leave 7:38 this campus, remember the dark moments that shaped us from the ground up, the good times 7:46 that we are grateful for, and the person we became because of it. 7:53 [Singing] We're going to teach them how say good-bye, say good-bye, one last time. Congratulations, Badgers. 8:05 (applause)

    U Wisconsin at Madison is one of the few top "Public Ivy" research universities in America, which has 25 Nobel laureates and 50 Olympic medals associated with it. Established in 1848 in Wisconsin, the same time the State joined the United States, on a huge land-grant campus of nearly 1,000 acres, it remains the top university in Wisconsin to this day. The motto of this great institution of higher learning is, "God our light, the divine within the universe, however manifested, is my light." Kudos to Wisconsin Badgers!

    The most Hamilton reference by a Malaysian other than me

  • @hanava2846
    @hanava28462 жыл бұрын

    Pada tahun pertamaku, aku mendengar lagu Hamilton (Story of Tonight) untuk membantuku menempuh kehidupan yang sulit sebagai seorang mahasiswa baru. Aku terus mendengar lagu itu, menghafalnya saat berjalan ke kelas, menunggu bus dan juga sebelum tidur. Aku datang ke kampus ini dengan beasiswa dari tempat nun jauh di sana Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Peluang yang tidak mudah bagiku untuk ada di sini. Kampus menuntut pengorbananku, aku awalnya berekspektasi besar, aku harus menghabiskan waktu berada di sini seperti Hamilton yang punya berjuta mimpi dan melakukan hal yang belum aku lakukan. di awal, bisa dikatakan semuanya susah, kimia, matematika dan ditambah lagi aku perantau. Tetapi sebagai mahasiswa, kita dituntut bekerja keras dalam belajar, berhubungan dengan teman dan keluarga, dan in my case aku dipisahkan dengan keluargaku oleh benua yang di mana beda waktunya itu adalah 14 jam. Yang terpenting adalah, kita semua bekerja keras untuk masa depan cerah buat kita sendiri, untuk semua ekspektasi yang kita pegang. yang bermasalah tentu saja ada di diriku, aku belum menemukan diriku di sini. Tahun kedua, aku menghadapi beberapa kesulitan sehingga kehilangan motivasi untuk menyelesaikan pendidikan ini. Aku mencoba menghibur diri, tetapi kemudian aku kehilangan minat terhadap semua hal yang aku pelajari. Realitanya, aku justru tidur sepanjang waktu, kewalahan mencari keyakinan serta minat yang sebelumnya ada di sini. aku...tidak punya harapan. Teman-temanku, lihat di mana kalian berada saat ini dan lihat juga ke belakang di mana itu merupakan awal bagi kalian. Hari ini merupakan aksi terakhir kita. Kalian yang telah berusaha setiap hari, kalian telah memilih bangkit dan terus mengejar setiap kesempatan. Percayalah, kalian tidak menyia-nyiakan kesempatan yang ada, karena jika kalian lulus dan menamatkan semua courses yang diberikan, kemudian kalian merasa lega sambil duduk merenungi laptop, maka kalian berhasil. Aku melihat kalian. Jika kalian lulus dan meluangkan waktu seharian di perpustakaan atau di kedai kopi pada malam hari, kalian berhasil. Aku melihat kalian. Atau di manapun kalian dan kalian berhasil, aku melihat kalian. Pengalaman sehari-hari memberi bobot dan substansi pada sertifikat yang akan kalian terima. Setiap pengorbanan, semua tenaga yang kalian keluarkan setiap pagi, walaupun sudah melebihi batas kemampuan, kalian di sini hari ini, kalian lulus hari ini, dan aku merasa bangga bersama kalian. Sekarang, di akhir, aku bersyukur kepada Tuhan, dosen-dosen, mentor dan konseling kesehatan mental kampus, keluarga dan kawan-kawan yang bersamaku sampai saat ini. Kota Madison, aku pasti merindukan musim dingin di sini, juga matahari di waktu pagi. Tetapi aku harus meneruskan jejak yang telah dititipkan kampus kepadaku. Aku menyayangi kampus ini dengan sepenuh hati
