    Thing is: russian language can be spoken with tongue only and closed teeth. In english it's hard to do. So to pronounce russian correctly you need to forget pronounciation of english words and re-learn letters. If it's R in english - you may not even mention it, but if it's R in russian - in 95% cases you should clearly say it

    Russia had a pretty big drill (Zapad) in 2017 and UVB started broadcasting a ton of messages right as it began. I remember being fascinated by this station and actually looking through the logs on Priyom and noticed the steep increase of messages. It's quite clear this is a military communication station.

    @@asasial1977 True, you can always listen to shortwave radio as long as the broadcasting station has a generator and you have a shortwave radio with batteries. I also think it is reasonable to not upgrade a broadcast to modern standards, if you want it to be secure. Apart from physically going to the station, there is simply no way to change or block a shortwave radio broadcast. Meanwhile anything based on the internet or satelite communication can be hacked or blocked by someone who is literally on the opposite side of the planet.

    Also, over the last couple of years there has been increased activity on this frequency, with the buzzer sound being occasionally disturbed by random transmissions that most likely are just some trolls trying to spook potential listeners. If this radio was used to relay critical info, the russians would have taken it off the air a long time ago.

  • @psyclops973

    @psyclops973

    3 жыл бұрын

    @EFFram YOUng It can't be. Just a couple of months ago, a particularly long message was being relayed on this frequency which gave some troll enough time to start emitting Rick Astley - Never Gonna Give You Up on a nearby frequency, effectively jamming the buzzer station. The person that was reading the message seemed to acknowledge the music that was playing and waited for a few seconds before saying something that has been translated as "Crash, Crash, Crash" and started reading the message from the beggining. There's video of it on KZread. If this station was part of the dead hand system, the russians wouldn't allow some random troll to rickroll everybody listening to it.

    UVB-76 is also believed to be a dead man switch. And the voice reading the code also changed throughout the years. At some point it actually was a female voice believed to be created by a voice generator. Another interesting thing is that at some point the beep-noise was played over a microphone and sometimes you where able to hear people speaking in the background.

    There are people working at the station, tho. There's a picture on the internet with some elderly man walking into the building with a plastic bag. Probably he bought food for him and those who work there. His clothing is formal but no insignias. Probably some military officer. The messages are read by humans. One guy gets a call, he sits in front of the mic, reading the message while the other one often talking in the background. Probably just chit chatting. Sometimes you hear interference, music or even a TV. Probably some officers sitting there, eating food, smoking cigarettes and watch TV on duty and get good money for that.

    it is NOT a dead man switch and its the stupidest popular theory about uvb im seeing everywhere. uvb is barely working and it fails constantly and i mean constantly, every few days/weeks or so. if it was a dead mans switch, we would all be dead numerous of times. beep noise could be heard because there are actual people working there, and the station often leaves the microphone on and you can hear other russian number stations being listened to in the background. for example, as of 27.01.20 you can hear something which sounds like "the pip" (other russian number station) on 4625 frequency simultaneously with the buzzer tone. the buzzer tone is nothing more than a beacon, so that other people dont occupy that particular frequency when actual broadcast needs to be made, same with the pip, squeaky wheel, airhorn, alarm or other countless number stations.

    Despite my thoughts that UVB-76 was never anything that sinister, I have to admit, it always creeped me out and still kinda does. Probably the most eerie factor if you ask me is that, if you listen to some samples of the "buzzing" noise, you can occasionally hear other noises like people having conversation or moving furniture around. That in and of itself isn't scary, but it means that the buzzing tone isn't inserted digitally but rather is an open microphone with a buzzing device placed in front of it. The image of an empty room with a mic placed in front of some kind of buzzing speaker that broadcasts 24/7 is creepy to me.

    I'm amazed I never heard about this when the info has been out there since 2011. I've been interested in uvb 76/mdzhb for a while but I assumed the answer was the most mundane one rather than something outrageous, so I'm not surprised to learn the truth, just surprised it's been out there for so long. Pretty spot on. It’s just a Command and Control radio station. It’s an extremely simple and reliable way of relaying orders. As for the sound that normally plays when orders aren’t being given, it’s just there to prevent “dead air “ and to let people know it’s an active frequency and to not broadcast on it.

    In general the reason short wave continues to be used for these purposes remains the same as ever before. Satellites generally have a targeted footprint, likewise using the internet/other networks will all indicate a general idea of where your target is. A powerful short wave station will be receivable over an entire continent and often multiple continents. With a good unbreakable code (like the numbers stations), this means you are able to communicate with operatives in such a way that the message cannot be deciphered and the location of the operative cannot be discerned. Note the USA has a worldwide shortwave network they still use today. In this case any message (usually in some form of code) is actually simulcast from multiple sites around the world. There's no mystery around these any more it's true. Although it was when I first received one of these randomly in the 1990s, I had no idea what I was receiving. It was such a strong signal and just a bunch of numbers. The idea these signals stop a frequency being used isn't likely though, I think. The pip is bang in the middle of the 80m amateur radio band. I've held, and heard QSOs that continue normally with the pip going strong in the background as people speak. It's not even a minor annoyance. On a busy night (when propagation is good) you can probably experience this with a UK based Web SDR site, on a busy night every single 3khz slot is in use in the voice area of the band. You will almost always hear the pip from the UK in the evening hours.
