This reminds me that I need to replace my UV bulb. It's been over a year.👍🏾

I have Osteoporosis Dino’s in my tank. It’s been three agonizing years, I’ve tried every natural eradication method under the sun, to no avail. I’m looking into UV sterilizers right now, but I believe the Dino’s I have are the autotrophic immobile type. I’m hoping with the addition of the UV, I may get some relief. Dialing in the flow is very crucial also. Fingers crossed 🤞🏻

The uv should help a lot with ostreo. You should have them gone in a week or less with a three day blackout and uv running 24/7. Ostreo goes into the water column at night. This is why I got my uvs as well. Good luck, you can do it!

I think they are a must have. I have a eheim inside. And the biggest best value one I could get for the pond. I’m running ozone in the pond too.

I notice a difference when my bulb needs changing. I have higher nitrates, so that may be why. But I also think it’s why the colors are so bright in the sps tank. I bet it helps a lot in your situation too. Take care bud!

I have a 30 gallon that has an in-tank UV sterilizer. I bought it at Petco funny enough. Super low wattage, but good build quality and very simple and easy. It took care of my dinos and I run it since.

Awesome! Yeah, I think uv sterilizers can definitely help with a lot of problems in our tanks. I'm glad it worked out for you, Thanks for sharing! 😁

I have the large one from turbo twist I believe it’s the 19 or 20 something watts but considering they are pretty much dated they do a terrific job on my system as well 👍🏼The clarity is instantaneous so I know they work.tank looks awesome buddy 😱

Awesome! Yeah as stated from an expert here, they probably won't work well for fish parasites, but I think for single celled organisms like ostreo dino and simple algae, they work pretty good if tuned well. Thanks for sharing! 😁

I do not. Though a properly sized one could have helped in the past when the tank got ich and Velvet. Puffy is the only original member left after the last outbreak a couple years ago.

i used to use them a lot but found no benefit, didnt help with ich or velvet, or dinos. I gave up trying to combat ich velvet with uv or hyposalinity and other treatments, now i found just stress free enviornment and fish resistant to it are best, havent lost a fish in 3 years with this method.. As for dinos, or hair algae, tbh i feel a mature dirty tank also solves this problem.. I dont use sumps, or fancy equipment on my 135 and i could grow any sps i wanted.. all i used were t5s and power heads Big uv sterilizers are also money sinks, a 80-100w uv on 24/7 can cost 20$ a month in power.. which is A LOT of power, when you combine your lights and other equipment.. my fish tank lights are already adding like 40$ a month in power, another 20$ is alot when your electric bill is already 200-300$ a month. Great sps btw, my tank used to look like this until i moved 2 years ago, and the move killed half my corals and all my sps..... havent recovered since with the insaine coral prices, i sware prices are stupid these days, corals that used to be 20-50-100$ are now, 50-100-150$ or more

Yeah, it’s tricky figuring out which uv to use for what. Uv won’t work for some species of dinos, and a properly sized one for fish parasites is key. This video is just to show how I use uv in my situation, and doesn’t apply to all situations. I’m sorry to hear about your losses, moving is stressful on everyone involved as it is. I personally try to make reefing as affordable as possible for those in my area, and I suggest trying to find others in your area that are willing to share as well. Thanks for sharing your experience! Happy Reefing!

That UV is way too small for that sized tank.... The chart you referenced requires all the water returning to the tank to be going through the UV, hence your UV is WAY to small for your tank

  • @Reefer_Matt

Please elaborate. The 6x turbotwist is turning over 100% + of the tank water (75 gallons) every hour with the current flow rate. The sps tank is a 75 gallon tank. The frag tank is 45 gallons.

@@Reefer_Matt All water returning to the tank has to be sterilised in a single pass, that is what the charts reference (not turning tank water over in an hour), I am not talking about the freshwater pond chart you see in your video from seller. So you have to have enough wattage to kill in a single pass through the UV and all the water entering the system has to pass through this UV in order to displace the existing water (with pathogens). This is how these charts work and is the basic principle behind UV in aquaculture. Then you use the basic rule of 1 - 1.5W per gallon (or about 0.1-0.15W/G/H in pump flow) to work out the wattage need and then check against actual pump flow. So you should be at least 75w on the return to the main tank and 45W on the other, account for some loss over the year in bulb output and that's 90W on main tank return and 54W on the other. Check that wattage against approximate 750g/h return rate of return pump for 75g tank and we are where you need to be. At the 18W you are currently at, you really are not doing much at all.

Is there a reason you believe that all the water has to be sterilized in a single pass? Also, if you look closely at the chart, it has flow rates depending on what is desired to be eliminated. This sterilizer works great for my tank, and has eliminated ostreopsis dinoflagellates. When the bulb needs to be changed, it will start to get algae on the rocks. After the bulb is changed, it goes away. This uv has been in use for three years now, and is not a new addition to the tank. Other people may have a different experience, but it works very well for this tank.

Ah ha! Now we’re getting somewhere! I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and experience! Feel free to lead with that detail next time. In this situation, I am targeting Ostreo dino. I am not suggesting that these uv sterilizers will eradicate things like ich or velvet in my situation. I have success with these sterilizers for what I am targeting. My videos are not lectures, but rather conversations. And I appreciate you taking the time to converse with me here. You are exactly who I like to talk with about reefing and its associated science and practices, as I am always looking to learn more. 😁
