UV Lights Impact on Plant Growth (Collaboration with Shane Torpey from MIGRO)

UV Lights Impact on Plant Growth (Collaboration with Shane Torpey from MIGRO)
Ultraviolet radiation is present in sunshine absorbed by plants grown outdoors. Is UV beneficial and is it necessary to have in the grow room? Lets look at the different types of ultraviolet light and the benefits of using UV grow lights in the grow room.

Thanks for the info. The jury is still out on UVB in my opinion. I've seen plants grown using one of the Migro UVB T5 lamp and there didn't seem to be any difference. Of course I haven't tested inflorescence for terpenes or anything, but from a consumer perspective, I didn't notice any difference. There are studies that suggest that UVB did nothing to influence terpenes.

There are studies that show UVB does increase terpene and cannabinoid production. I've grown specific cultivars with and without UVB. The UVB grown cannabis has higher medicinal value. I have the Migro UVB 310 and the Mars-Hydro UR 45. I have experimented with UVA, UVB and IR. I have also experimented with the amount and timing of radiation exposure as well. I try to mimic nature as much as possible. I like to do UVA, UVB and IR at noon or half way through the light cycle for 30 minutes during veg to mimic the intensity of the sun at high noon. I also like to dim the lights 20 minutes before lights off and 20 minutes after lights on to mimic sunrise and sunset. I'd love to play with my spectrum to mimic seasons but that will have to wait for a more advanced LED setup. During late flowering I stop the IR and increase the UV radiation exposure time to 1 hour at noon. I don't need to buy my medicine anymore. LED tech has improved greatly but it still is no match for the sun.

@avalanchecannon7911 interesting. So you had the inflorescence tested and secondary metabolites were higher when UVB was applied? Would be awesome if it was legal within the UK. I'd love to be able to experiment with Cannabis.

@@drgr33nUK I haven't had my buds measured for cannabinoid content. I do the old smoke and feel test. In reality take my beliefs with a grain of salt. Cannabis should not be illegal. On the same token, legalization here in the US basically allows the government to profit the most off of it.

In some cases impacts may not be dramatic, but getting the end product tested/screened there could be a difference that makes economic sense, especially at a large scale.

Seems as if adding citation links got my reply removed. I'm not tying all of that out again :) But, in short, two universities have published evidence that UVB does nothing to improve quality but reduced yield. The only study that concludes UVB is beneficial in any way is the research published by Dutch Passion. The most recent study was carried out by the University of Helsinki and was published Nov 2023. They came to the conclusion that it may slightly increase myrcene. Based on the two studies published by universities and my own anecdotal observations, I'm going to suggest that UVB improving anything is bullshido. Far red, on the other hand, seems to have a significant influence on secondary metabolites. My advice would be to not bother with UVB as the risk of injury and the effort required to implement is not worth it. If anything, it would seem that it's decremental.

I'm using some lights from California Lightworks with built-in UVB fluorescent lights. They recommend to use in only the last three weeks of flowering. I haven't noticed any damage to my tent or anything else from exposure after probably a total of six months of UVB light use.

2x 2 footer AgroMax Pure UV in 4x4, run for 6 hours in the middle of the light cycle, for 15 mins on, and 45 mins off. Try to keep the plants about 6-8 inches away if not more, the leaves will get leathery, but i notice a significant increase in trichome coverage on the plant.

I've used both starting in week 2-5 of flower, then again week 8 thru finish. Flowers were dank as fuck. Just put the uvb 3ft away and uva can be 1ft away. Trust me, you'll notice a remarkable difference from grown without. No more dispensaries.

I have a question thats never really covered in how UV performs. How does the UV effect everything else, tent, fans, anything else plastic in the tent ? cause its UV that has a really bad effect usually on plastics isnt it ? After a year of having UV LEDs in my PC they had a pretty substantial effect

bleaches it, and over time will break down plastics, but that takes years, longer than the life of the product to begin with.

Quite negligible. Same BudBox white reflective tent as 2015 and has never had a grow without UV. Tent is still in great condition and the issue actually stems from the zipper tip having issues getting into the zipper to start zipping, which only started in the past 6mo or so.

UV light can cause plastics to become brittle and loose color. However, this is more common as a result of sunlight as it is also very intense light and heat.

Thanks, yeah I wish i could post a photo of the UV lights i had in my PC for a year, they were covered in a silicone layer that was quite thick ,probably about 4 or 5 times the thickness of the silicone layer that covers the diodes on my mars hydro light and in a year it had degraded quite badly. My worry would be that it could only take months for the silicone layer on my lights to degrade making them vunerable to moisture or that the uv would have an adverse effect on the lining of the tent degrading how refective it was and ruining that @@DeBaccoUniversity

Very interested in this. I've seen the UVA lights from companies like AC Infinity and Mars hydro. They cost as much as a 2x2 full spectrum grow light. Then you have lights for reptile tanks that cost $20 (light bulbs included) and they provide both UVA/UVB. Since we still don't know which is better and which does nothing, seems more cost effective to get the reptile lights. If they don't do anything, you only wasted $20 instead of $100.
