I watched this for the first time on Prime in the UK and don’t remember that line, in fact I really couldn’t tell what tone the show was going for at all so I kinda gave up halfway though the second episode, perhaps I should give this show another go elsewhere, bluray maybe???

Not only did he realize, he started exhaling to try and breathe out the gas. You can see Lees hand sealing the mask to his mouth. The attention to detail in this show is nutty.

the part where the guy says "can i just leave please can i just .. go" with the look in his face actually gives me full body chills and extreme anxiety every time

​@JimR Fairly realistic scenario, most people when faced with mortal danger tend to just freeze up, some run those with some training or a duty/expectation to do something (like cops or emergency workers in general) will actively resist or act against whatever force is happening because they tend to be the ones to take charge of these sorts of situations out in the real world. A group of nerdy, underconfident young men/kids in a comic store aren't going to be capable enough to take charge and would probably react in this way.

The part that disturbed me the most was when Lee was talking to the boy. He reacted exactly how I would've reacted in that situation: trying to induce compassion, trying to reason with them, trusting them for desperation and then ending up doing what they told you. Lee was so cruel... Five minutes in and this serie'd already got me. Completely devastated yet willing to go on and see.

The actors of the shop-workers give such underrated performances here, you really feel their fear.

Arby's sidekick carries out a brutal murder in public, step by step, methodically to instill that fear amongst others. The casual manner of execution almost makes it feel like it's a 9 to 5 job for these guys. This makes rest of them accept the uncertainty of the gas mask, which they know more or less is going to kill them as well. But they want to take that chance of going to sleep because they have seen what the other consequence is. Makes the scene much more sinister and believable... Brilliant writing... Wish there was a comic of Utopia as well

What are some other great ones

One of the most Iconic british series ever. And sadly one of the most unknown and underrated. I honestly think the first season finale is perfect. The second season was almost as good as the first, but that ending was begging for a 3rd season that now will never come. The first season is a masterpiece of moral ambiguity. And is probably the most stylized series I've ever seen, from photography to music. This should be enough to sell anyone on watching Utopia. and if it isn't, then it might just not be for you. If you like this, you'll love the series. Believe me when I say is no style over substance. Is style plus substance.

Season 1 was amasterpiece of moral ambiguity? Bruh, Janus would end up killing the entire human race, ever seen Children of Men? Imagine that but way worse as the world would probably find out that Janus can't be reversed. Humanity wouldn't have time to grow old and wither away, we'd definitely find a way to speed up our expiration date. Not to mention The Network didn't even care how many people they were killing to get the comic and send out Janus, there was nothing positive about them.

I think the series closed perfectly. I mean. Sometimes leaving some bits is better than throwing them away (the way it finishes the stories of 15 characters in 50 minutes perfectly is delicious. And the fact they didn't just show how Wilson murdered all of them despite we know he obviously did makes it really more frightening, even more considerimg it's done just a second after rIan discovered the "cure" for Debby's disease and she killed herself one minute before he came with the answer and he could miraculously save her life). Seriously. A masterpiece. It was able to make a perfect implicit finale

I love how they tell you exactly what’s going on in the first five minutes, but I still spent most of the series confused. Brilliant writing

Yeah, british shows can always write the perfect "helpless victims who wait for death like sheet at the slaughterhouse" scenes. Almost as if they were so used to this being the norm.

The music is unlike anything I have ever heard. So unsettling, and in the end almost something silly from a Mr.Bean episode. I'm seriously impressed how much it gives to the scene and show in general.

i can't belive amazon managed to miss one of the most iconic bits of the series: the colour saturation

There was something brilliant to the pipe. The first person who died, it was violent, it was sudden, and it was bloody. Suddenly, the gas didn't seem so bad. You were just going to go to sleep is all. Not even approaching you with malice, it's just a gas, it won't hurt you, you'll just sleep. Then the cashier sees the man on the floor with his eyes open. You don't sleep with your eyes open. You can hear him trying to breath out, trying to exhume the gas. It's pointless. So pointless you don't need to see him die. You just know he has. Cue a mundane scene of a man wanting to light a cigarette indoors, guilted to going outside. The same man who just killed three people without flinching. Astounding.

The gas is argon. You don't starve for air like you do when you hold your breath or breath co2. You just calmly die for lack of oxygen. Your body can't tell the difference.

I think the first kill with the pipe is to assert dominance. If he started with the gas, I think they would just freaked out, not scared freeze.

An incredible opening scene to a series - and Cristobal Tapia De Veer's soundtrack is mindblowing. Utopia genuinely scared me, something about it really, really gets under you skin. "It's just gas."

Such a shame it was never concluded. I really enjoyed this show

Utopia is a once in a lifetime experience. Nothing before like it and nothing since.

Just finished the first episode of this. It is genuinely amazing, highly recommended to everyone.

Lee is such an underrated character. And Neil Maskell gives such an underrated peformance.

This is the single greatest opening to any show I've seen, ever. That chilling soundtrack. Those long unbroken shots. The immense feeling of terror and hopelessness as the scene progresses. Absolute perfection.

Why is this not more popular? Best show of the decade!

Such a glorious opening to an amazing show that I will make my grandkids watch, thank you mister Cynical for enlightening us all.

R.I.P Utopia. You'll always be my favorite tv show T_T

Just watched the remake, and wish I've heard of this before because I would've watched the original first. I'm American, and most shows I've ever watched that were a remake of a UK show was shit compared to it's source. For example, when I watched Shameless, I saw the UK version first, and loved it because I am poor, and live in a rough area so it was interesting to see how they cope with that over in the UK. I really liked the version of Utopia that I saw, so I can't wait to see the original, but watching it second sux because of spoilers. Anyway, much love to my Brothers & Sisters over in UK & Ireland, your cultures are cool. ✌

Amazon prime introduced me to this show. It is amazing that this came out in 2013. It is chilling to watch it during the pandemic. Amazon remake wasn’t too bad (since I don’t expect much from TV shows) until I watched the first episode of this.

the amazon remake is not good at all, jessica is edgy to be quirky, the network is bad because why not, and just generally much worse

Lee and Arby working together or being as a character duo is fucking terrifying. Even if you separate them, they’re still scary on their own. Like how Arby (Pietre) single-handedly killed a fully armed SWAT team to save the protagonists in S2 E2, while Lee kills Ian’s boss while still acting sane and playful but still made a bit of a mess to cover it up in S2 E3.

Such a good show. Didn't need to watch a 7 hour video to know that.

Sadly I have just started watching this. My mind is blown!!! The British version naturally. I cannot believe I missed such an innovative, beautiful... At times super brutal show!! And then the Americans tried and failed to make their own version and I didn't even bother! .....

The scene nailed me to the screen. Was even better then the opening scene of "Lost".

Perfect way to open this show. It has every trait that the rest of the show has. Mystery, style, violence, conspiracy, it’s brilliant.

That intro just hits me.

I watched this opening scene 3 years ago while trying to find a light Australian office comedy of the same name based around how Australian democratic politics and weakness for office fads and new technology which is not necessarily an improvement worsens infrastructure planning. The comic book store owners passivity in going to his death was at that point the most chilling thing I had ever seen. I just finished season one of this Utopia, it's pretty good.

I mean, Wikipedia spells his name as Arby, but: "Arby's name is later revealed to be initials for "Raisin Boy", with his real name being Pietre." So his name when first introduced IS Arby, but the reveal is that it's actually RB, which is an alias. So you're right about the depth, but wrong about the name.

your thinking the drawing is her names spelling and your wrong, the drawing gave Kristof the idea for the name, but the spelling did not stay the same, the spelling is "hyde" as seen in the credits in every episode shes a character in. Been 10 years and I still think about the themes of this show. More prescient now than ever.

Love the music for this show too; it’s so weird and uncanny yet almost hauntingly familiar, it’s great when music is that effective in adding to a scene that it leaves a profound effect.

God, when he tries to run away but knows that he can't do anything, then knowing what's incoming... It's fucking terrifying and I would lie if I told you that this scene didn't traumatized me the first time. It makes me realize that something like this (of course, not exactly *LIKE* this) could happen any day. Amazing acting, amazing writing, outstanding series

So amazing to see the comment section lit up so recent for a clip uploaded in 2013! Kelly and Donnelly did such an incredible job with this show. I can't say that I'd ever watch the remake but I think its more than obvious plenty of us would binge season three.

Brilliant drama. The storyline and the violent scenes you couldn't get away with today.

Excelente serie... la mejor que he visto hasta ahora. La segunda temporada está tb genial... Me encanta la estética, además de la historia y los actores obvio.

I've seen this video like 10 times, and I've never noticed until now that there was a kid underneath that table. Like how did I even miss that?

One of the best series first scene and one of the best series.

I’ve watched Pyro’s video 2 times and this intro with no commentary still gives me the chills…

If there only ever existed the Amazon version of this show, i would have enjoyed it. I sawe this when it orginally came out, and it eviscerates the Amazon show in every single way imaginable. Just wish we had got to see it in its unswervingly beautiful yet brutally intense entirety.

The acting in this scene is actually really well done

Almost everyone i've told to watch this series stopped after S1E1, couz they could't handle this scene. XD

this is such an amazing way to start a show, every line is acted amazing, and this scene sets up so much, im gonna go over some of my favorite lines in this scene because i wanna "Can I go, can I just go please?" I love this because it's delivered so well and is incredibly realistic, this man just watched someone get murdered in front of him, and freezing up, begging his now captors to let him go, not having any cool moment where he takes down the robbers, like most real people there's just fear. "Where is Jessica Hyde?" Pietre says this authoritatively and calmly. Not normally scary, but considering Lee just murdered a man this is terrifying. He continues to ask this until Lee decides it's enough and just kills the man. Does an amazing job at creating tension behind the name of a character we don't yet know. "I'm gasping... I'll light it outside" Absolutely hilarious delivery. Also establishes a character trait that comes into play near the end of the episode and saves Wilson's life. "Don't put the gas away yet" My favorite line in this scene by far. Does an amazing job at establishing the soullessness of Pietre and the ruthlessness of The Network.

Sad it took me so long to see this.

I like how he just asks politely to leave after witnessing a dude get his brains bashed in and all he can say is "oh no" lol great dark humor Edit- lmao I saw this way before Pyrocynicals video made this show blow up

Wasnt really meant to be humorous, just realistic. It makes sense that someone would instantly freeze up after suddenly witnessing something like that. The lack of rational thinking let's him naively believe that the tank will only put him to sleep because of how welcoming Lee is about it and because it's not as violent as what he just saw

When they come for you, and they will, always, always make them work for it.

The background news gives you the bigger picture and you dont even know it. Pyro you made the best 5-7 hour video out there

Everyone asks "Where is Jessica hyde". But no-one asks: "How is Jessica Hyde"
