FYI: The bill to change the flag was sponsored by a Republican and signed into law by a Republican governor. But not without concessions to the people opposed to changing the flag. The current seal on blue flag will now have to be displayed above the new flag if they are on the same flagpole, and both flags will fly over the state capitol.

As a Republican myself, I don't see what was offensive about the old flag or woke about the new one. That said, I generally don't think most state flags need to be redesigned (besides the redesign that Mississippi recently did, and possibly Georgia). Sure, they may all look the same and be hated by vexillologists, but in a majority of cases I feel like it's trying to fix something that isn't broken.

Utahn here and I followed the flag process thoroughly. The length it took to make the flag was deliberate and apparently didn’t cost much. It was a mostly volunteer project with lots of public feedback (my choice was not the final flag but the chosen one was one of my liked flags). Also, Utah has a very outspoken group that “loves” the old flag (though I doubt any of them own/could identify it without pulling out binoculars). This group is ridiculous and I don’t know anyone who seriously wants the old flag to stay. They are a small minority and I can’t wrap my head around keeping the stupid default flag Utah had. There were some interesting shenanigans with the star but apparently the native tribes it represented had a different approach that was reflected in the final flag. The whole “woke” thing is stupid. The flag wasn’t viewed as “problematic” except by anyone who despises anything loosely attached to LDS history (shocker, the 19th and 20th century Utah is defined by the LDS church). People complaining about erasing history probably couldn’t identify the history that was on the seal. There were some weird “pagan” rumors going around that were also dumb. The woke argument was a straw man argument at best and was probably done to drag the fight into a national light. Which didn’t work out. The flag failed a vote because there was some argument about the Star design, they made a quick amendment and it passed. It then had to go back to the house to get voted on again.

I'm Religious Conservative so I would obviously know what is woke and isn't. This flag change is clearly needed and the flag looks great so it's a good decision. Everyone btw needs to stop saying something has lost all meaning, there's a difference between a loss of meaning and a clearly derogatory use of a word. Incel has a clear meaning, wants sex but can't have it, and a derogatory use like someone who isn't an incel but call them that since they act like a caricature stereotype of an incel.

Doubtful to be online vids specifically, but the spate of mostly southern states redesigning after public pressure to remove hate symbols mounted does call attention to them, and it is an undeniable fact that like 30 states are just the seal on blue, which makes all them worse if you are wanting to be distinctive. Look at Maryland or New Mexico, then look at Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, and Montana. All basically the same, not very unique.

Because it did have republican support? The people doing the petitions are conspiracy theorists doing mental gymnastics. Case in point, the petitions got 1/3rd of the minimum signatures needed to even have their petition seen. Even people who don't really like the new flag don't care about their bullshit.

I wonder if I'll ask the friend or acquaintances about this too even if they aren't currently living in Utah.
