Mal was at midfield when she started tracking the ball. No one knew what was coming except her. Awesome! The German defenders never put a body on her. They were preoccupied with Alex Morgan giving her a convoy every time she goes downfield.

I was at this game last night. The US should have high presses Germany. Germany is a good team and physically brutal, borderline dirty but truthfully the US is a much faster team and should be using that advantage. Germany does not have breakaway spend. They attack the middle. I am not sold on our coach. On the goal by Germany no one marked the scorer.

The US team has a long way to go and I am not sure the coach is getting the best from the players. I still think England is number one and the US and Germany are neck and neck.

Foot speed is not Sophia Huerta's forte. It wasn't Kelley O'hara's either. Sometimes Rose would cover for Kelley. Rose is playing more of a forward position now, but Sophia is a ridiculous passer. The US is not going to depend on a lot of short passes. It's a quandary. Definitely having Cook play on the same side as Huerta is not the answer.

Lessons learned: -SAM (Sophia, Alex & Mal) should always be the starting front line. -The midfield needs to drop back on defense a lot more often. Ertz is sorely missed there. -Defensive coaching is sorely needed, and that’s not Vlatko’s forte. Their positioning as a whole is horrible, and they got burned on the counter attacks over & over. Plus, Cook should always be a sub; she’s a weak link.

The defense surely needs work, but I have to rant about Pugh and Smith because of how big I believe their potential is, how huge of a key to the US team's success they are, how ABSOLUTELY FRUSTRATING they have been to watch, and how much better they were this game. They have the talent to help this US team become an offensive juggernaut, but to be quite frank, their decision making in the final third has been horrendous up to now. Before this game it felt like they were downright allergic to passing or playing holdup if they won/received the ball in an attacking position. Just tunnel vision every time. If Andonovski is going to continue to be dead-set on playing this offensive 4-3-3 with backs pushing up, Smith and Pugh will need to help control the middle third of the pitch and make better decisions in the final third, like they did in this win. It will significantly ease a midfield and defense that has players playing roles they aren't used to due to injuries if they aren't constantly wasting half chances and rushing like before. This was the first game where it looked like these two players were thinking about the overall flow of the game and what they needed to do for TEAM success. This game was a decent start of the team looking like an actual unit. Smith's goal came from some nice short passing (also some terrible German defending) on the edge of the 18, but it was still mostly an individual effort, and even in that run of play the lack of cohesion and trust was apparent. After a nice triangle to get her in, every other US player in the attacking area stood there ballwatching because they didn't expect a decent cross or centering pass from her. Not a single run from the edge of the box or move to leave their marker, each of them moved like three walking paces. Who wants to waste energy making a run for no reason? Part of that is positional coaching too. Pugh needs to watch film or something because she was edging TOWARD the ball when her defender left and there was a mountain of space smack dab on top of the penalty spot. Pugh was also better in the final third than before, but she still botched amazing chances with poor decision making. She made a magnificent run and cut her defender back beautifully for a clear shot on goal JUST outside the six yard box.....and then she laid the ball off to Morgan. It was unselfish but you simply can't pass a shot just outside the six with only the keeper to beat, that's just ridiculous. It definitely felt like she was overcompensating for all chances she was hogging before. Talent is not Pugh and Smith's problem, clearly. Their problem is knowing when to make great individual plays, and when to trust and utilize their teammates. Because the same thing happened with the lack of trust and cohesion on this play too. Morgan was not expecting that cutback pass at all, so her run was halfhearted and she was not ready to receive the ball. That's the kind of rapport they have not built because of their style of play up to this point. And then we have Pugh's breakaway. The keeper BARELY even made it outside the six yard box and she tried to dribble around her. That ball needs to be smashed around the keeper if she's not going to close. Obviously way easier said that done, but finishing has been this team's kryptonite on offense and needs improvement. All that being said, both of them were huge parts of this victory and I do believe they are the correct options to start up front with Morgan. Let's hope the mindset they carried into this game will be continued and was not just an anomaly. They at least attempted to be unselfish in the final third and there was even a decent amount of midfield pressure and buildup play from them there that we haven't seen before. The cohesion and mutual trust wasn't all the way there yet, but this was a good stepping stone. It takes more than one game of unselfish play to build that up. If they are smart on the attacking and middle thirds, I honestly believe they can help carry a defense and defensive midfield that has looked extremely suspect, the second half of this game is proof of that. It's not like the defense has been giving up 3 and 4 goals in these losses. Overall, the US have been creating more than enough opportunities to beat teams that score two goals against them, even with a lack of connection. If they manage to build that up with their teammates, this team will look amazing come world cup time. But it's a big IF.

I need to see Kristie at the 6 more!!! I also wanna see Sanchez more. Pair her and Trinity Rodman on one side and you’re bound to get a goal or two out of them. I also don’t think this was Alex’s best game but it seems she’s used more as a decoy for the wingers to make runs inside and score. I think if Horan played the 9 and we used her as a target woman and let the wingers make runs past her, it could be extremely deadly.

Nice win, some good plays in spots, but the inability to finish -- to even put the ball on the goal face -- is depressingly familiar. The new wrinkle was to have some wide open breakaways that also resulted in poor finish attempts. There is obviously time to get things right. Let's hope this match was an inflection point on the way to vast improvement and not a temporary variance in what has been an extended run of lackluster play.

Dee Bee 2 months ago Can someone please explain. You really want to know? In every country, apart from the Usa, if someone plays for their country, they get a game fee. The fee will be exactly the same for men and women. In England its around £1,000 per game. The male players earn thousands of pounds per week playing for their clubs, so they donate that £1k to charity, have done for years. And the England women do as well. In the Usa, for whatever, its different. The game fee that the Usa men and women get " might " be the same. I do not know. It should be, if it isnt. They are both representing their country. But it seems that the Usa womens team wanted a bigger share of the prize money, that ' they ' won , from the Four World Cups that ' they ' won. Its complicated. The Usa women are far more successful than the men. The ussf refused, so the women sued and won. and then found out that they would get less, so wanted to revert to their original contract, and a judge refused. as i said, its very complicated. But as far as winning is concerned, the Usa womens team wins a lot of games and a lot of trophies. Wish me country's team did that :) Well , i'm English and we have just started, winning the Euros , 29 games undefeated , and favourites for this years World Cup. So as far as i'm concerned, if the England Women win the World Cup , pay them. A lot ! Football / soccer is a religion in Europe. Pay them. They won the world cup. Make them millionaires ! ....... That enough explanation? :)))

@@deebee4575 If you are talking about the ' National ' teams , then they are not played for profit. The USS is a non profit organisation. Most federations are. Most of the money comes in from TV revenue or sponsorship , not fans on seats. All that money goes to the respective National Federation and it is paid out by the federation. The amount that any federation pays to its teams , is only a small percentage of its income. So the federation can easily pay both national teams , men and women, the same game fee. Which is usually a lot less than they get from their club salary. nobody goes to see women’s soccer on a professional level. They might not in the Usa, but in Europe, the womens clubs have an average attendance of 11,000. Some twice that. For the National team , every England game is sold out. In June last year , England beat the Netherlands 5-1 in front of 19,000 fans in a 38,000 seater stadium. The next 12 games, up to now, have been sold out. 10 of them in 30,000 stadiums and two at Wembley, which holds 88,000. One of those games was v the Usa. So i dont know how many fams go to watch the Usa. You do have the problem of other sports in the Usa , baseball, basket ball, ice hockey etc . In Europe, football / soccer is a religion. Seriously. And the World Cup? There are two. The mens Wc is held one year before the Womens. Although the mens WC attracts billions in tv and sponsorship, the Womens is getting bteer every year. It will never catch the mens , but it is financially able to stand on its own feet, without any subsidies. The US women’s soccer team brings in less than 10% of what the men’s soccer team brings in..... That could be due to the tv contracts, sponsorship deals , ticket prices, when and where the womens games are played. Other games or sports that are being played or shown on tv at the time. For example, if a mens game was being shown on tv at a certain time , it would be suicide to show a womens game on a different channel. actually pointless to show ' any ' program, while the football is on :) So are you sure you are talking about the National team and not Club football? Just wondering.

Excuses. The USA are no longer playing semiprofessional part-time players from other nations anymore, where they would win by being fitter and stronger. As European women’s teams have got funding and become full time professionals, it is exposing the weakness in the USA soccer, such as low technical players and a lack of tactical sophistication due to poor coaching in the USA in general. Too much emphasis on physicality in women’s soccer in the USA not enough on tactics and technique and possession.

@@Delboy0 lmao for once I agree with you Delboy0. US men's and women's do not understand that technique, possession and creativity are the essential parts of this sport, not physicality and speed (those are nice additions once you have the required technique). But what I've been telling you is that if soccer/football were the top sport in the US from the beginning (late 1800s), and the US had a proper soccer culture, the US would understand this. Watch how Americans talk about American football, baseball and basketball and how Europeans talk about soccer/football in terms of their pundits. They have a fundamental knowledge of the game. You do not see that with American soccer pundits. It's easier to eventually be better if you have maybe 85-90% of the funding but are from a nation with a proper soccer culture (European women's teams) than if you are from a nation with slightly more funding but without a proper soccer culture (US women). So the fact that the US women won the 2019 Women's World Cup surprised me; I thought that the aforementioned increase in funding while being from a proper soccer culture would have led the US women to lose in r16 of QF, yet they had their most dominant Women's World Cup win ever. And by the way, when I say if soccer were the top sport in the US from the beginning (late 1800s), and the US had a proper soccer culture, I'm not saying it would be like the Spanish or Brazilian type of play. It would be different from any national team we see, but the closest thing to it (to give a chance to visualize it) would be a mix between the French and English. There'd be a baseline technical ability that the present US doesn't even have because of lack of soccer culture, and supplemented to it would be very good strikers, good defenders and excellent goal keepers. The position that would be RELATIVELY the weakest for the US compared to other positions, would be the playmaking position. But in a nation where soccer is always top sport and as huge as the US, even in that the US would have good players. The US would also have a very good league if soccer were always the top sport in the US. I do not know whether it would be the best league in the world, top 3 or top 5, but my guess is it would be at least as good as Serie A/Bundesliga (I will estimate on the low end for the league just for argument's sake). If soccer were always the top sport in the US, the US team would be made up of players in top european leagues and top players in one of the top leagues in the world (the US league). Even when England were in their recent low ebb (about 2008-2016), they had players who were starters and bagging goals on decent Premier League teams. Even at a low ebb for the US, the US would have the same thing Also, I know you talk a lot about the black players on France and England making them out of reach for the Euro nations that don't have many black players. While I'm not sure how true that is (euro 2020 Italy, 2018 WC finalist Croatia, Germany 2014 had 1 black player, 2008-2012 Spain had no black players, nor did 2006 Italy, or any WC or euro winning european teams besides 1998-2000 France and 2018 France and 1984 France and 1988 Netherlands had a couple black players). But if you look at teams like France 2018, you'd have that with the US teams in the 1930s-1960s before even the likes of France had many black players on their national team. If soccer were the top sport in the US from the beginning, the US, as a perpetual World Cup contender, except from the beginning, and competing when World Cups were easier to win (pre 1970), the US would win 2-3 World Cups between 1930-1970, and 2-3 World Cups between 1970 and now. At worst, it would be 2 by 1970 and 2 between 1970 and now, for about 4 on the men's side. If the US had this proper soccer culture, but still had the funding advantage over European women, they'd likely have won 6 of the 8 Women's World Cups instead of 4. But the US winning 4-6 of the 21 World Cups on the men's side would be more indicative of the US' strength if soccer were always its top sport, rather than the US women winning 6 of 8 Women's World Cups. So my point is that if you equalized everything; on the women's side, the rest of world had same funding as US women, but the US had the 120+ year soccer culture of most of the world, the US on the men's and women's side would be among the favorites every World Cup and would have won World Cups

@@Ralph_Smith0724 Organised Womens football started in England by 1881 , so your first statement is wrong. The Womens game in England was banned from 1921 to 1971 , so your second statement is wrong. After England won the WC in 1966 , the womens game started up again , but was pretty much ignored by the footballing authorities until they had done very well in the Mundalito tournament , winning it twice in the 80's. Then Fifa started up a WC for women in 1991. Now the Usa get involved. Because you have a college system in the Usa , you had an advantage over Europe. Our colleges / universities are for education, not sport. So the only help they would get, would be from the professional mens clubs. Who ignored them. So the Usa ( almost professional ) team kept winning the WC against the amateur European teams. Until the 2019 WWC when England lost in the semi to the Usa. The top clubs then started supporting the womens teams, giving them funding , training facilities etc. And a year or two ago, our teams finally went pro. The English FA , after seeing the Women lose 12 of their last 14 games, decided to employ Sarina Wiegman, the Dutch coach of the Netherlands that lost the 2019 final to the Usa. She took them to her second Euros win , and Englands first , beating all previous winners of the WC , Euros and Olympics. 29 games undefeated. 21 of those v the top 20 teams. The Usa isnt doing so well. In the current rakings, they are only 5 points ahead of Germany. Your time at the top might just be coming to an end. Check the rankings score, if you like. And revered is not exactly the word that you should use. :) I can think of others , none of them polite . Respected, yes, they are still dangerous, but there are 3 or 4 teams who can beat them now. Revered, feared. No, not any more. Welcome to 2023 :)

The new professionalism in Europe has robbed the USA of the fitness and athleticism advantage that used to win the games so easily with. It is now exposing the weaknesses in women’s soccer in the USA. The poor coaching in general meaning there has been too much emphasis on physicality, meaning American players are inferior technically to Europeans and women from other traditional soccer nations. You add to that the lack of tactical sophistication in the American women’s league where all the teams play transition football due to this over emphasis on athleticism meaning football produces players who are powerful runners and not creative, high technical skilful passing possession players. And you are noticing a clear difference in the technical quality of women players in European teams compared to Women on the US team. It is only going to get worst for the Uswnt because Europe is only at the start of their professional era and just wait these countries with no pay to play system start getting the best female athletes in soccer, it will be game over for the USA
