When I was 3-4 years old (~1975) , Vilayat Khan Sahib lived with his second wife (Monisha Hazra) next to our house in 8/1 Chapel Road, Hastings, Khidderpore, Calcutta. I would play with his daughters (Zilla and Yaman) and listen to his mesmerizing riyaaz during breaks, He was steeped in mosiqi, which had a dream-like quality. His meends, alamkars, raga adaakari was technically perfect, but his genius was his taasir, the X-factor, which made his music so appealing to the layman and touched the soul. Technically, he was probably second only to his walid saab , Ustad Enayat Khan Saheb, who passed away when Vilyat was in his adolescence. Ustad Vilayat Khan Saheb was a great admirer of the sarodiya Ustad Hafiz Ali Khan Sahib. There's a palpable influence here, especially in swara lagao and gayaki anga - the "singing sarod" of the former maestro influenced the "singing sitar" of the latter. Ustad Vilayat Khan's immemorable Yaman Raga was introduced to me in 1978 while I was living in Oslo, Norway. It is melodious and unique. Always plays in mind and ears and ever fresh !

This should be kept safe for posterity. Only a true genius can touch the past and the present with so much elan and beauty. Vilayat Khan Saab could approximate God's work when in mood and I don't think there's any greater praise than that.
