Ustad Asad Ali Khan - Raga Multani - Rudra Veena - Rudra Vina - Dhrupad, Amsterdam 27th April 2003

Dear Friends, Music Lovers & Musicians,
we continue with an afternoon concert - played just two days after the Marwa in Utrecht at the Royal Tropical Institute (KIT) in Amsterdam on 27th April; being part of the European Tour 2003.
The Tropentheater was for decades one of the best known address for high-grade Indian classical concert in Europe. In spite of its pioneering role in presenting non-Western performing arts and cinema in the Netherlands it had to close a few month ago, since politics decided to cut the supporting funds. What a sad reference for Europa's present dealing with (non-Western) culture.
In the first part of the concert Khan Sahib played Raga Multani, followed by a magical Shri in the second half, which his I will edit and upload next.
As most of you know, musical instruments react very sensible to climatic changes, as they happen a lot while traveling on a tour. The Rudra Vina is unfortunately no exception to that subject. You might notice how the instrument kept Ustadji busy with retuning, adjusting etc. in the first part of the Multani. The way he still managed to establish the mood of the Raga is really admirable. It's a great lesson in how to keep your mindset right, even if the instrument does not responds as expected.
As more one can relish the flights of inspiration Khan Sahibs gets while being in full swing in the Jor and Jhala Ang.
Like before: Pandit Mohan Shyam Sharma accompanied Khan Sahib on Pakhawaj, Zaki Haider and Martin Spaink on Tanpura.
Enjoy!
Carsten
*****************************
Liebe Freunde, Musikliebhaber & Musiker,
Carsten

Possibly the greatest instrumentalist I´ve ever heard in my life. Every raga performance I´ve listened to him play is a scintillating masterpiece.

Some years back, in an interview, Khan saab stated sarcastically that in the times to come Indians may have to go the West to learn the Rudra veena. Sadly has turned out to be prophetic.

One has to really be deeply calm, quiet and relaxed in one's consciousness to be able to play this instrument. Very mellow and Transcendental.

I don't know why they say Rudra Veena players are cursed. I think it's the rest of us that are cursed - such beautiful music has left our midst and we no longer have the chance to be in the presence of this greatness.

Well, as the world today in general has lost its senses for subtle things while running for more and more material achievements, the divine music of the veena and those who got lost in it are naturally seen as outsiders, alien to this world, cursed not to succeed according to its actual norms. And yet, as you rightly mentioned, this world would need nothing more than their music and the blessing it brings to the minds and souls...

So great to see the Ustad's facial movements while he plays the meandering notes. It was as if he was singing through the Veena. His head moving along with the ebb and flow of the Raag and its underlying melody. Such a divine performance. Thank you for the upload.

Thank you Carsten, 10 years ago but the memories are vivid! Concerning the 'India Muziek' and the Tropical Institute, it was a top-class venue for a long time. Before the subsidies were cut, it was already going downhill, thanks to the 'vision' of the staff. Before, with John Eijlers as the main artistic director, the institute made a very good name for itself. After his demise, things went rapidly downhill. I continued to be employed as a prof. tanpura artist but left the sinking ship in 2006.

I would be very interested to hear raga Shri from Khansaheb. I remember clearly, when hanging out with you all, that in these days I used to whistle (!) raga Shri lot as it was so much on my mind, and Khansaheb could hear me from his hotelroom. So we got raga Shri from him, it worked like a charm! Also it was very nice from Ud. Mohammed Sayeed Khansaheb to invite us all to a wonderful home-made dinner courtes of his wife!

This is so nice. I play Saraswati Veena but not Rudra Veena. I would love to have a Rudra Veena. I find myself tuning my other stringed instruments in an approximation of the Rudra Veena and then play them. Of course it's not really the same. But you get the idea, I like the slow, low tones and also rhythms. Can I ask anyone giving this video a thumbs down for some kind of explanation. I am curious as to why you would do that. For example: 1. You have heard much better versions. 2) You don't like the Rudra Veena. 3) You don't like Ustad Asad Ali Khan. 4) You don't like Indian Music. 5) You don't like Raga Multani. 6) Someone in your family or maybe you think you can do better. 7) Other. It puzzles me when upon listening to a great performance or even just a relatively good performance on any instrument by anyone there are always those few who give it a thumbs down and very very rarely do they comment as to why. -Peter in Tennessee U.S.A. age 68.
