He brings out the best in Desh- the melancholy seamlessly intertwines with the joy and fragrance of the first drops of rain on parched soil. His music flows like water, carving its way, stripping away every bit of impurity. It breaks your heart and soothes it at the same time. God spoke and created through Him.

Thanks to Subrata-da for the many treasures he has uploaded! A couple of comments on the raga... I would say that this should be titled "Raga Desh Malhar" as Khansaheb appears to be playing his version of that raga here, not pure Desh. For example, he has used a touch of komal ga (flat third) in the upper octave, typical of his interpretation of Desh Malhar. Also, the drut or fast composition which starts at around 55:15 is in a different raga, Surdasi Malhar (I learned a similar composition from my teacher Pt. Debi Prasad Chatterjee, a disciple of Pt. Nikhil Banerjee, who has a recorded CD of this raga.) Surdasi Malhar can be thought of as a combination of Sarang and Malhar. Anyway, it is not necessary to know any of this to enjoy the performance!

With due respect I would like to inform you that in higher octaves Komal Gandhar can be touched (sometimes) in Raag Desh. In Shahjahanpur Sarod Gharana, there is a composition by Pt. Radhika Mohan Mitra, which even directly takes Komal Gandhar in middle octave too. PS: I'm not that eligible for this discussion, but I too asked my guruji why he is teaching me Komal Gandhar in desh! And that👆 was the answer.

For Ustad Ali Akbar Khan only just listen and enjoy the melody. Because where our imagination canot reach his playing can reach there. In this world every one should not judge his music by brain. It will be futile exercise. Same is true for Ustad Amir Khan Saheb🙏

Thank you for uploading. The drut is in Desh Malhar. Very interesting change with different use of Komal Nishad.

Well I must say this piece is quite unique. During the vilambit gat Khansaheb seemed to deliberately finish before som, and soon the tabla caught on.

Khansaheb used to teach many compositions that ended before the sum, and were totally confusing for any table player who wasn't familiar with his Gharana.

Is it only me or others can also hear the use of Komal Gandhar every now and then? It's not pure desh.
