A detailed layman’s description of the capabilities of the US Navy’s LHDs (Landing Helicopter Deck) amphibious assault ships (in this video the visiting LHD-3 USS Kearsarge). These ships are the modern day refinement of the US Navy’s and US Marine Corps’ successful island-hopping amphibious assault campaign in the Pacific theater in WW2 (Tarawa, Saipan, Iwo Jima, Okinawa, etc.). This ship’s main task is to deliver ashore a 1,800-men combat-ready, fully-equipped Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) or A Marine Expeditionary Brigade (MEB) with their infantry fighting vehicles, tanks, howitzers and more, supported by a complement of attack helicopters, Short/Vertical Take off &Landing (S/VTOL) Harriers and F-35 jets for close air to ground support. Each LHD sails as part of a ready amphibious assault group with guided missile escort destroyers and supply ships. Very formidable and capable force.
