Sad to see such a fine ship scrapped. She did her duty and brought her crew home safe.

Go see Massachusetts, right there under the Braga Bridge in Fall River, then go to Quincy to see USS Salem

The state of Indiana wanted the old battleship. They annoyed the Navy with their many requests. Indiana did receive the silver set that they bought for USS Indiana BB-1, which is considered the first battleship, in the 1800s. It served on multiple battleships named USS Indiana and was serving on a battleship of another name when Indiana requested to have it back. It currently resides in Indianapolis in the Sailors And Soldiers Monument Museum. Indiana also received the bow which is currently at Indiana University in Bloomington. The prow and mast of USS Indiana BB58 has been located in front of the west entrance to IU Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Ind., since September of 2013.

Thank you for this great video! Indiana was a great ship and had an active career during the war. It is great to remember her and her service to the war effort.

Thoroughly modern and potent battleship all her life and her sisters as well. For my tastes the best looking of the US battleships.

I have a weak spot for the SoDaks...they look they mean business and they look as their business is mean: they look powerful and intimidating! Beautiful ships!

In my opinion this is the most forgotten WW2 battleship on the allies.

Dam shelling Tokyo that had to feel good after the long slugging from pearl.

When i was kid in the 60s every 4th of July a battleship would pull into are bay. Monterey California truly massive wepons.

Hate to see such great ships scrapped..

They also use them for man made reefs and sometimes for target practice. That’s sad too. I watched 2 of the 3 Destroyers I served on being sunk after they no longer had use for the Navy…

It depends on the State. New York was supposed to buy _Enterprise_ but they didn't come up with the money and she was scrapped. Washington State could have bought the _Washington_ but they didn't and she was scrapped. I dropped coins in a can when I was in 4th Grade to help buy the _North Carolina_ and got to visit her once. _Indiana_ and _South Dakota_ could theoretically have had their ships there - using the Great Lakes and/or Rivers but they would have had to really work at it including dredging. The _North Carolina_ is at Wilmington and got there on a river. So - it's not like it _couldn't_ be done. It just would have been a lot more work for _Indiana_ and _South Dakota_ . You generally find the Southern States to be more Patriotic. Alabama and Texas have their Battleships but Mississippi doesn't. .
