In this fly tying tutorial, I explain some techniques for you to use when tying flies with wire and other soft materials that provide weight. There are a few tips that I offer, especially when tying both bead and cone head patterns. At the end of this video, I ask for any additional suggestions that you may have to offer other tiers out there; thanks ahead of time for any tips.

Great info. I would like to see how you handle adding lead wire to jig hooks with slotted beads.

Awesome video Tim I sometimes use a small file to shape the wrapped lead ,to get a great taper

Tim, I always enjoy your videos. My question is why do you never see anyone tying the lead wire on using a reverse wrap? If you tie the lead on with a reverse wrap it will lay down in the direction of the thread and not stick up causing the stub that you need to cut off.

Great stuff Tim, I have downloaded all of your videos. \there is one thing which you didn't mention and that is lead sheets, I don't know if you can buy them over in the USA, but they are going well in the UK. When you tie a nymph, it is easier to transition the lead flats, they can be cut into strips any width you wish, usually about 2mm, they have a self adhesive backing on them and are really good. If you haven't heard of them, try Davie McPhail fly tying on you tube, as he uses it on nearly all his nymph patterns. Thank you for all your tips and tricks, they should improve my fly tying. All the Best. Douglas.

Thanks for the comments, Douglas. I am familiar with lead (and tungsten) sheets, but haven't used them enough to say that I am competent in their many applications. I definitely plan on utilizing them more, thus any other advice/tips you have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again! Tim

Love your stuff. Been very helpful to a noobie. I really appreciate the experienced insight. However, I'm really having trouble with it on size 18 hook with a bead.

Thanks for the comment, Rick, and have you tried the .010 wire? That's where I would start, and sometimes it's better to leave a gap between the bead and wire so you have room to finish the fly. I hope that helps! Tim www.troutandfeather.com

  • @TimCammisa

Absolutely, there are non-toxic wires that are sold you can utilize. Here's an example: www.orvis.com/p/nontoxic-fly-wire/349t You can also utilize bead heads with tungsten...and even put two on! ;-) Thanks for checking, and hope that helps! Tim www.troutandfeather.com
