Using Universal Header Repair Tool to repair corrupt Canon RAW, CR2 photos

Ғылым және технология

Apart from JPEGs I repair a lot of RAW photos too. For this I use a hex editor, which is okay to fix a few files, but becomes a pain in the bottom when you have to fix a few hundred. Apart from digital photos people often also ask me to repair audio files, or video files. And again for this I use the hex editor (HxD) and to repair a number of files I repeat a process over and over. Universal Header Repair Tool or U.H.R.T. is an attempt to make a generic tool that can automate repetitive actions that I used to use a hex editor for.

Hello, Disk Tuna : ) Thank you for dedicating your time in researching the repair and rebuilding of corrupted canon files. I myself have tried but could not do it, so know that it is no easy task. I'm quite good at repairing things and recovering files, but cannot seem to rebuild the corrupted ones even using a Hex editor : ( My dilemma is that 10 years ago I went on a holiday of a lifetime to Vietnam where I got involved in some social projects that meant a great deal to me. As soon as I got back to London UK, I backed them all up straight away onto an external HDD which died a few months later due to the caddy restarting and by which time I had already formatted and reused the cards times over. Cutting a long story much shorter, I managed to recover 40-50% of the files but then from one good photo to the next the corruption started. I have the previous photo and can see everything and I know what the next photo should be but it's not there and the Hex code looks all scrambled in the corrupted file. Do you think I can recover them? I am convinced that it should be possible to use a type of compiler? that looks at the previous photo taken at the same time with the same camera using the same settings to rebuild. I wish I was more technically savvy to be able to do this. Any help/pointers would be incredibly welcomed, I just want to try everything I can to try to save these memories. Kind regards. Hugh Hill

And did you try recover from the card or the hard drive? (Sorry for the late reply, I didn't get notified about this comment)

If the files are filled with zeros there's nothing you can do to repair them.

Hi, from Vietnam here. Its a pleasure knowing Nguyen Vu Ha on some of your projects. Which is awesome! I would love to have some video guidance on RAW SONY files ARW. Thank you for your great work!!! Would love to have UHRT got trademarked copyright registration to be able to sell it world wild in the future 👍😀

Don't believe everything Nguyen Vu Ha says. A tad more modesty would suit him.

Is there a possibility that this software will decrypt other file extensions (apart from pictures or images) like .con .txt .DDS, .DAT, vice versa in the future version 🤔🙄?

No. Also it does not decrypt, it repairs non encrypted portion of a file. If for example a text file would be large enough (150 KB >>, assuming STOP/DJVU), you can simply copy non encrypted portion into a new file.

Tuna, apologies for what I think is just an ignorant question, but if we can only use this method if we have a UHRT (but you don't offer it to anyone) how can we go about doing this? Why share the technique if we can't use it?

Anyone can use the method using something like HxD. Anyway, I use the tool to provide a repair service. And if some method proves to be viable I'll always consider create some end user type tool so users can do this type of repair themselves. But then there's must be some kind of perspective I can actually sell the tool, a few copies per month at least before developing such a tool makes sense. Many of the tools I develop for my own use aren't really read to be released, they're too far from "idiot-proof". I mean no offense with that, but a tool released to public needs considerable time to be user ready, dialogs explaining what's expected, error handling etc..

That's a great answer, and understandable. Perhaps I'm not quite figuring out the method, just by using the hex editor, I'll watch it over again and see if I can glean how to use this method via the hex editor. I've got a bunch of CR2s I need to try and repair, and I've really enjoyed using JPEG repair toolkit. I greatly appreciate your time in making these videos and in answering the question. Take care!@@DiskTuna

or FF DA , its very strange I figured all the data had to be lost in that case , but every corrupted file is occupying about an average of 13 to 23 MB . If you could help me out id really appreciate it🤝 as I'm running a business with paying clients

If it's a header issue you can apply this method using any hex editor, HxD for example is free. Only issue you will have is the embedded preview does not reflect the RAW picture.
