Using the Traction Control in Your Sprinter Van

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

You didn't spring the extra $15,000 for the "pseudo-4x4" Sprinter? That doesn't mean you can't get off-highway and enjoy the backcountry. This video will help your off-highway experience by explaining the Sprinter's factory Traction Control and proper use of the "ASR Off" Button.
A self-recovery video will be coming at a future date. As always, travel safe and carry recovery gear regardless of what you are driving.

This is a great piece of information. When I bought my 4x4 Sprinter the salesman said that 4x4 means you can get stuck farther off the road. Drive carefully

I'll save you the trouble, the manual does not make it clear what the button actually does. As if we needed another reason not to read the manual, right?

Nice video. You could benefit from a set of BFG KO2 245/75r16. I have them on my sprinter and have much more confidence in mud and snow.

I own a 1st gen Toyota highlander fwd. I'm running 265/70/16 bfg km3 mud tires. 90% of the time. I'm on traction control. But if I'm in deep mud and a foot of snow and I can't go any further. I'll turn off the traction control and rely on momentum to get out. Mostly Its ok.

Great video, very helpful. Not super familiar with the ASR function, in theory would it help prevent my tires spinning when starting from a stop? Been having trouble with my RWD 2014 Sprinter not being able to get out of my driveway when there is fresh snow or mud from the rain (it's a dirt driveway). Driveway has a very slight incline (maybe 5 deg) so not much, just tried pulling out of the muddy driveway with the ASR off after watching this and the tires just kept spinning, wondering if there are any more tips to help in this scenario. Thanks!

You may just be at the limit of the available traction. With asr on it brakes the spinning wheel and cuts power to prevent further spinning. With asr off it brakes the spinning wheel but doesn't cut power.

I have the older 5 cylinder RWD Sprinter. Two problems arose at new: Long lasting Euro 15" tires would go for 115K miles before replacing; OK, but, had no traction in slippery snow or mud in Chicago. With those tires I would turn off the traction control that locked up the wheel that was slipping and just give it the Diesel and burn my way out. 180K miles later with new 215-75X 15 off road tires the slipping at stop signs and in 4" deep snow went away whether using the traction control off or on. Sounds like those highway treads are the problem. Get two extra rear rims and good traction tires to begin your slippery driving. The jack up pump with the van is good; the 2 piece extension for the jack must be a GM part.

Good tires make all the difference! I’m still on the original tires but they are shot, so I’ll be upgrading soon.

When should I be activating ASR? When I expect slippery situations or only when I actually feel my tires starting to slip?

When I know some momentum is going to be required, I go ahead and deactivate it. For example, last week I was climbing a loose/muddy hill and could feel the ASR doing it's thing, but ahead of me was a patch of really soft stuff that I knew was going to take some momentum, so I went ahead and hit the ASR off button. That's how I've been using it. I just did 80+ miles offroad this week and the van performed well.

Any idea of how to turn this off on a 2019 4x4? I have no button and I don't have the MBUX system. Thank you!

From what I understand you cannot turn it off on a 2019+. Maybe someone else can confirm since I don't own one. Perhaps they updated the software so it doesn't hold you back as much as my 2016? I'm curious.

I wish my 4runner had a simple ASR button like my Sprinter does. My 4runner will stop the wheels completely until traction is gained again. It's almost gotten me killed twice as I tried to turn into traffic from a stop (in winter). I'd rather just drive my RWD sprinter :) Great explanation, Ken. Cheers!

Seriously! Without the rear differential locked on the 4Runner, it wouldn't go as far as the Sprinter (in 2WD of course). Traction control works really well when you use it properly! Thanks for the comment!

@@ourkaravan ahhhh. Got it. Ya mine is 4th. My previous two Tacoma's and FJ had zero issue. One would think the 4runner would work the same way, but it doesn't. Aside from that, they're great vehicles.
