It’s always exciting when stuff flies off the lathe. I learned that the hard way 10 months ago when I started turning. Happy to say that it hasn’t happened since.

Just wanted to point out that it was a Leslie Longworth from New Zealand that invented this chuck some years ago, hence the name. I’ve used one a couple of times, and they are a joy to work with! Makes adjusting for different sized bowls a breeze. That is some good looking claro walnut right there, yes indeed!

Just what I needed to see. I’ve had a Longworth chuck knocking around the shop for years, but I’ve never been confident about how to use it. I do have a dedicated chuck for my Cole jaws, but I have to move the buttons, Every. Single. Time. whenever I use that. Just turning the plates looks easier.

The thumb nuts are a nice touch on that unit.

I would think with the tail stock applied you would be safe to increase lathe speed. Then when final finishing with the tail stock removed, slow down to the 600 max. My 2 cents.

I agree, with the tailstock in place I usually bump the speed up a little bit. -Mike

Will the Longworth chuck work on the Artisan 1420? Is there a model that will?

I have this item and I am not thrilled about it. Why did Craft Supplies sell me one where the hub has no dovetail angle is beyond me. My chuck would have grip it a lot better than the hub just being straight.

Unfortunately they do that to fit a wider range of chuck jaws from different manufacturers. If you aren't happy with the chuck and would like to return it please let us know, we'd love to get you taken care of. Thank you!
