Using softwood charcoal to melt brass
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
How to use spruce lumber cut-offs to make homemade charcoal to melt some aluminum and brass on a vintage blacksmith forge.
Japanese wordsmiths use softwood charcoal for their craft because it burns at a hotter temperature. My experiment was to see if I could use local soft wood to melt some metals for use in my sand casting. Brass has always been just on the edge of my forges capabilities with hardwood charcoal, so I want to to see if the spruce would do it.

Great video Sir
great video!
Things melt a lot faster if you can’t get that heat into the top of the crucible
How long does it often take you to melt brass that way? 🤔

A long time. Probably an hour beginning to end. Just when you think it’s not hot enough, it’ll melt.
I tried to melt some copper today, and my furnace didn't get hot enough. I had store-bought hardwood lump charcoal with forced air from a shop-vac. Do you know if homemade charcoal burns hotter than store bought charcoal?

I really don’t know if charcoal will get copper up to its melting point. It might take quite a while if it will.
Hi, do you think that if i have weak air to my charcoal furnace ( my breath :) ) that softwood charcoal will really help me?

I think getting more air in there will help a lot more. Even a computer fan would be better than your breathe?
I have melted copper with charcoal

Did you have to add a bigger blower?
It is good for grilling?

Yes, but hardwood lasts longer.
Spruce for BBQ? What about all the resin from the wood? Nobody uses spruce for smoking but when turned to charcoal - is it still that toxic? Hmmm...
