Using Shapes & Patterns In Our Compositions for Landscape Painting-Tutorial

Too often we think in terms of rendering or color first. But the first thing someone sees when they look at your painting is the composition, how things are designed. And using shape and pattern is a big part of that.

    Back in the early 80's I had an instructor at the Mendocino Art Center that would put a slide in a projector an it would be out of focus. We would then have to interpret what we were seeing through values, design, and color in a painting exercise. It was a lot of fun coming up with abstract designs. Thanks for the video Phil.

    Shapes, shape variation (negative and positive) and value heirarchy were absolute game-changers for me. Thumbnails are every bit as important. Would be fascinating looking through the sketchbooks of these artists!

    It is very interesting to discover those american painters at the early 20 century for they are not known in Europe ; ( if you don't travel in America you have few chance to get to know the American painters before the abstract mouvement ) They announce in many ways the further abstract mouvements in America as you shows well with your analysis ; it appears to me that the abstract mouvements either in Europe or America had slightly different roots ; now this is in the light of Art History : at my art school in France (70') we were told abstract art with different sources : Bauhaus , constructivism, futurism , Africanism, Cubism and of course abstract arts from the USA ; the landscape in itself was more viewed as some thing from the past ... But here it is ; it appears to me as kind of a missing link ; Thank you for sharing this part of Art History 🙂

    I am confused..your demo used a very dark value as pattern , the artists you showed in other videos did not use a very dark pattern for all areas!

  • @philstarke.artist

    @philstarke.artist

    Hi Dee! I start with a simple dark pattern then vary the value slightly as I finish the painting.

  • @LauraLeeArtist

    @LauraLeeArtist

    Maybe what you're seeing is different keys. A high key painting (mostly lighter shades) will have lighter "darks" than a middle or lower key painting. The demos are showing lights and darks, but every painting is different in this respect. Hope that helps.
