This makes so much sense I have no idea how I haven't learned this before and was still trying to write mystery.

When I wrote my first mystery, I also did not have an understanding of many of the things I talk about in my videos. It’s only through needing to come up with video content, and needing to express it in a way that other people can understand, that I’ve managed to clarify many of these concepts for myself. That’s been one of my biggest takeaways from this channel: the best way to learn something is to teach it!
Great as usual. Can't wait for next week's video!

Thanks, Robert! I'm excited about it, too.
Super helpful info... Thinking back on Mystery movies/ series I had watched and books I had read that I love, I totally see how they had used set-ups and pay-offs. Thanks for guiding us on how to do that...waiting for the next one

I love this video! It's helpful as a person's turkey pants lol. I think you answered this already, but how many clues should be in a cozy????
@janekalmes

Generally, about 1 per piece of info. Or perhaps 2, if you stretch that info out into a setup and payoff. In my current 40K-word novella, I think I’ve got about 8, if I include each setup, payoff, etc. as one. In a full length novel, I'd need more, because I’d have more red herring subplots, and each of those would need its own clues.

@@janekalmes My novels are still in the works. Writing has become my master passion, but it’s also my second dream to follow. My first one was working for Marvel, which I did for a number of years.

@@janekalmes Short novel for self publishing debut…probably next year since we’re planning to move across the country. Sherlock Holmes tale. Probably not entirely a surprise :)
Also, stretching out clues, like stretching out an elastic band, increases tension.
