This is an excellent guide and a perfect illustration of why I love the modern era of information sharing. There's no way on Earth I would have ever figured out how to put this all together without hours of frustrated tinkering. Heck, I wouldn't even know to buy the template guide and centering cone. Thanks for the great explanation of how everything goes together (I was able to do it pretty quickly with your video tutorial)!

In the router manual on page 20, it explains the centering procedure. The cone is inserted from the other end and they actually say to center it with the adapter in place.

Yup. Not sure what you mean by inserted from the other end but I agree that if you don’t center with the template guide and bushing installed, you’re just hoping everything is centered and not actually centering anything except the baseplate.

Thanks for this vid! I bought the PC jig and a PC bushing set that I didn’t need, but couldn't figure out how to use them with my Bosch router. I bought the the Bosch adapter kit along with the cone, waited 3 weeks for delivery to Turkey and they arrived today! Can't wait to start dovetailing drawers tomorrow!

I found the Bosch adapter to be more pain than it was worth. Much cheaper just to buy a clear universal base plate that accepts the PC bushings. No fumbling with all the pieces, Plus you get the benefit of a clear base to see your cuts through

Leave the motor in the base, then insert the cone. So the base should between the cone and motor, and the cone should be acting on the bottom facing side of the base- the side that rides on the work piece, as opposed to the top side which faces the motor.

Isn’t it funny how, as you mentioned, the PC guide bushings became more or less the industry standard, and now Porter Cable doesn’t even make routers anymore?! I think they still sell the dovetail jig though.

Today when I was setting up my new Bosch 1617EVSPK, I tried to remove the bottom plate screws with a Phillips head like you mentioned. At first I thought the screws were stripped until I got really close to the screw heads and saw those tiny torx heads. The manual was useless about what bit drive to use to loosen the plate for the centering cone or to install the adapter plate. I also wish there was a case diagram sheet that shows how all the components fit into the awesome case. It was like trying to solve some Egyptian Pyramid puzzle. I'm joking, it wasn't that hard to figure out but just a minor pain. Nice informative video as always, Sir.

Haha, their documentation isn’t quite as good as it used to be and like you, I wish there was a sort of quick reference guide printed within the case.

  • @wulf67

You're correct. The manual doesn't tell you which drive to use to turn each screw head. It also doesn't tell you not to eat yellow snow or not to get into the bathtub and pretend that the router is a nuclear submarine.

The centering cone goes from the other-outer side...so that it presses on the plate that you screw onto the base.

The Bosch centering cone is made of plastic and not centered. rotate the router shaft with the cone installed and you can see it wobble. I set up a dial indicator and it was off center by a lot.

Thanks for the info. Stumbled across as I was looking for the adapter system for my Bosch 1617 to use with the PC 4200 jig. Currently I use my old 1611 but the adapter is way different and the router is way too big for the jig. Try to use more editing in the vids to clean them up, otherwise, good info.

Thanks for watching and a great question! Whenever I’m able, I do use the Bosch bushings, but with my dovetail jig I always use the Porter Cable bushings in the Bosch adapter as they are properly set for the jig and provided bits. This set gives some great flexibility at a reasonable price.

  • @MasonWoodshop

I’m not 100% certain, but my understanding has always been that Dewalt routers were compatible with Porter Cable bushings out of the box since they have the same parent company. I could be totally wrong on this assumption, of course.

He says “the hopes are it perfectly comes through this hole” (9:45). What he’s really saying is the centering cone only center the base but we are relying on faith that the template guide and bushing were manufactured with faultless tolerance because we didn’t check to see that they were centered. So is there a centering cone that can be used with template guide and bushing installed for a truly centered template guide??

What a BS setup. Looks at the box of parts for a stupid bushing!👎 An easier solution is a CLEAR plastic plate knocked out on a cnc router that fits your bushing for that dovetail jig. Problem solved. Dewalt says they give you the cone with the routers, but they lie. Too bad PC quit making routers. They were just as good as that mexican bosch.
